Australia have suffered their first away defeat in over a year with a 3-1 loss to South Korea at the Seoul World Cup Stadium on Saturday night.
Korea went into the match amidst an unbeaten run of 24 matches including a successful South Africa 2010 qualifying campaign that saw them claim an Asian record seventh consecutive World Cup appearance.
Australia were missing several key players including the influential trio of Lucas Neill, Tim Cahill and Harry Kewell, while the hosts fielded a vastly experienced line-up.
Australia started sluggishly and were immediately punished five minutes into the match with Park Chu Young scoring a well-taken goal as the Socceroo goal was breached for just the third time in the last 12 matches.
Australia turned the ball over in midfield with Lee Chung Yong feeding Park Chu Young who scored comfortably past an exposed Mark Schwarzer, wearing the captain’s armband in place of regular skipper Neill.
In contrast to the Australians, the home team opened with verve and it was no surprise when the lead was doubled on 20 minutes.
Lee Jung Soo flicked home from close range at the near post after a static Australian defence allowed Kim Jung-Woo a free header into the danger area from a free kick.
With the Socceroos surviving several scares and under significant pressure, the direction of the match changed as Patrick Kisnorbo scored his first goal for Australia.
Kisnorbo headed home from close range after taking advantage of some hesitant goalkeeping from Lee Woon Jae who had failed to claim a Mark Bresciano free kick from a wide position.
Australia used Mark Milligan’s long throw to upset the Korean defence on a number of occasions with Shane Steffanutto getting on the end of one such moment mid-way through the second half, but the North Queensland Fury fullback’s spectacular volley was tipped over the crossbar by Lee Woon Jae.
The Socceroos second half showing was significantly better and always looked likely to secure an equaliser.
But Korea claimed the clinching goal three minutes from time with Ki-Hyeon Seol scoring with a header following a stunning run and cross from Manchester United midfielder Park Ji Sung.
The goal was awarded on advice of the assistant referee who ruled the ball had crossed the line despite Schwarzer’s intervention.
In the dying moments Josh Kennedy seemed set to pull a goal back but his header hit the post after another dead-ball delivery from Bresciano.
Australia conceded three goals for the first time under Pim Verbeek, with the last occasion against Iraq at the Asian Cup in July 2007.
“I think it was a very interesting game,” said Socceroos coach Verbeek.
“I learned a lot but I think my players (did) also, so that’s why we play games like this.
“Korea deserved to win this game. If they are better than us, like they were today, especially in the first half, then they deserve to win this game.
“For me the most important thing is the performance and that I learn from my team what they can do and what they can’t.
“We had a totally different team and we had a lack of experience in the back-line, and you need a little bit more experience with somebody who can organise in the back-line,” said Verbeek in reference to a defence quartet of Jade North, Milligan, Kisnorbo and Stefanutto.
“I have to be fair it was not only the back-line it was the whole team.
“Defensive organisation was not good. The second half was much better but the first half was definitely not good.”

The defence was simply not there. That’s the only thing I can say about the game.

Pim will never play that back four ever again.
What did Pim find out apart from not starting with that back four ever again.
1. Jade North will never play right back again, let alone for Australia again.
2. Culina and Grella better smarten up with their passing.
3. McDonald can’t fit into his systems.
Request to Pim – please give Vidosic a run against Holland next month.

And people’s opinions on the great opinion divider Nick Carle?
South Korea seem to be the only AFC team, other than Australia, capable of stepping up to the big stage when it counts. Japan, for whatever reason, is held back despite its vast reserves of talent.

I have believed in Carle for day dot. And glad he got a run, and not a token run either. Did not disappoint in any facet of his game, except actually netting one himself. Solid everywhere on the park. Some of his hold up play and final third passing was penetratingly meticulous. He is a natural passer and links incredibly well with Scotty, and Bresc on the night. Surely whetted Pims appetite for more.

The only thing I would say about Carle last night was that he held onto the ball a lot better than his team mates and slipped a few good ones through when others might have failed.

If Dukes comes back, I’d like to see Carle on the park with him. The Socceroos are a completely different team when either of those two are on the park, for that matter. I hope Pim appreciates that whilst Dukes maybe out of the game, and therefore unavailable, Carle is willing and able to contribute.

Why didn’t Burnley, Swansea or West Brom go for Carle in the transfer window? Those teams would suit his game much better than Crystal Palace.

Surely the case is building momentum. Surely Carle will find his feet in the next window. Plenty of time to get games and keep building his fitness for June.

I concur KB. However, more likely that a Korean or Japanese league manager did. I noticed that Carle was marking the ‘batman’ sub, and Foxsports commentary team remarked that _that_ Korean player was a very popular figure in Japan (J League player) and in South Korea, just coming back from injury. Also a Verbeek endorsement may work wonders to get the coin up on a contract bid, may entice Walnock to let him go. He and Carle seem to have a decent relationship.

I wouldn’t go that far at the moment.
Make no mistake, Carle did well, but occasionally opportunities present themselves and he doesn’t quite take it.
Just as one example, there was one opportunity for him to have a clean left foot smack at the ball from the edge of the box, but from memory, he scuffed it and it trickled harmlessly into the keeper’s hands – you’re lucky to get one of those per game – Pim will note that – you can be sure of it.

Yes, i recall Culina and Holman had their own fluffed shots, albeit even more spectacular failures.

Yes – but the difference is that Culina has the credits in the bank (Holman doesn’t), so Carle has to take these opportunities to get the credits up – it might sound unfair, but that’s the way of the world.

But that’s still the way of the world – you don’t give someone a start at international level if they’ve had zero club time, just in the hope that he will eventually come good – it doesn’t work that way.
Having said that – North has had a dream run in comparison – but that has to be viewed in the context of a highly unstable back four, currently.

Two good performances in a row against some stiff Asian opposition for Carle. Pim subs him on at the 58th minute while we are chasing the game, and takes off Holman. I think it’s safe to say Carle is in the ascendancy. Regardless of what any of us say or think.

Well, i am glad Football people can discuss the game..in this “thread”. Milligan was reasonably subdued, i thought. Perhaps the pairing was a bit awkward. Kisnorbo may not be in such a “leadership” position at the moment to pull his younger teammate through. To be honest the failing of the Socceroos was through the midfield. Grella wasted a lot of possession and Culina was coming to terms with added responsibilities, due to the absence of competent and able bodied midfielders in front of him. I thought Holman wasn’t horrible, Bresciano though needed a big game to assert his credability as a certain starter (which in the first half he def did not). I thought Maccca looked the most comfortable he has ever looked, and sighed every time i saw Kennedy defending our corners (wtf?). Anyway, kudos to Pim for making the best of a bad selection opportunity, in which aside from Troisi, Ruka and Vidosic left scratching the arses from the sidelines, took off Holman for Carle in the 58th or so minute. UNPRECEDENTED! Anyway Nicky showed his class, and his Palace earnt discipline and team work. Will never be a Gerard, but will certainly be game changer…unlike his sub, imo.

Kewell, Carney, Cahill, Emerton, Neill, Chippers etc missing, new 2nd string back 4, conceding early, Grella below par, Mc Donald not scoring, Shwarz looking shaky are some reasons for the poor opening 30 minutes. After that Socceroos should have at least taken a draw from this game.

MVDave agree.
Two early goals were freaks, defence was ball watching and we had no luck.
Kennedy missed several, he would normally put away.
Shots that deserved a goal, like Stefanuto’s and Bresch’s went straight at the keeper.
Hit the post 3 times.
No need to panic and a loss like that will do them enormous good.
Nice to see Pimbo a little humble and a little embarassed in the pm interview!
Watch for a big improvement against the Dutch next month – who beat Japan 3 nil btw.

I agree jimbo – we needed a loss, and this was a good time for it.
I am a bit worried about our defence though, i feel that it is not good enough and we have few genuine options. although i guess you could point at the stats and say we concede very few goals.

I have to take you to task on that comment… You have to be kidding me… Without a Grella on the pitch we wouldn’t have gotten through the WC qualifiers… Yes he didn’t have one of his vintage performances, but we need a healthy Grella for South Africa… Much more than we need a Stefanuto…
If I remember correctly you accused me of finger pointing Stefanuto for letting in a gift gaol standing on his post…? Then against Sth Korea; well he added another gifted first half goal for the Sth Koreans when he should have just let the ball run over the sideline for a throw-in…
Is Stefanuto your cousin…?
