Sports commentators have the best job. Secretly we all want to be one. Every weekend a few hundred have the privilege of going to sports events and doing what they love. But who are the best at it?
I’ve created my top ten Australian Sports Commentators I have listened to. Feel free to tell me if I’m right or wrong:
TOP TEN
10. Sandy Roberts
9. Gordon Bray
8. Tim Lane
7. Dwayne Russell
6. Fred Stolle
5. Ray Warren
4. Clinton Grybas
3. Dennis Cometti
2. Bruce McAvaney
1. Richie Benaud
Why Richie, you may ask?
Well, I love Bruce, as he could call a Fijian hackey sack competition and know everything about it. But I can’t go past Benaud and his masterful voice.
He has an aura around him and when he leaves, he will be sadly missed. His ability to sum up a scene with very little words makes him the best going around.

I did forget Jim Maxwell. He is quality and looking back he could have taken some other person. I am too young to talk about Bill Collins but on Youtube his call of Bonecrusher’s 1986 Cox Plate win was brilliant. I like how you keep comming up with your lists it makes for intesting debate.
Brian Martin Tyler if I was doing a global best Martin Tyler would be top 3 at least.

Surely Gerard Whateley deserves a mention. He’s a fine commentator and is remarkably knowledgable on a range of sports.

Tim Lane (in my opinion) is the best AFL and Sports Commentator on Australian Television. He is older and has had a little more experience with different sports than the very overated Bruce McAvaney and is more up in the legue of Dennis Commetti. Tim has a true passion for Football and you can tell be his commentry, even though he is a Carlton man, he doesn’t take it too far like Robert Walls. With his experience and fantastic knowledge with very fair, objective commentry, Tim Lane is one of the most respected sports commentators and doyens on T.V.
