Just who is rugby league’s greatest fullback will be answered in the NRL grand final when superstars Billy Slater and Jarryd Hayne go head to head.
Melbourne dynamo Slater steered his side into their fourth successive grand final with tries in both halves as the Storm crushed Brisbane 40-10 at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.
He was denied another early four-pointer by referee Jared Maxwell, and pulled off at least two try-saving tackles to stop the Broncos.
Parramatta’s Hayne was equally as dominant in his side’s preliminary final, having a hand in two tries as the Eels surged into their first grand final since 2001 with a 22-12 win over the Bulldogs.
Hayne’s appearance in Sunday’s premiership decider is not guaranteed, with the custodian put on report for leading with his knees in a tackle on Bryson Goodwin.
The match review committee will meets on Monday morning to decide whether he has a case to answer.
If Hayne is cleared, the match-up will have fans salivating.
Hayne, the Dally M Player of the Year, will be pitted against Test incumbent Slater, who as well as the two tries against the Broncos, bagged four in the Storm’s qualifying final win over Manly.
Slater, too, would have won the prize for the game’s best player in 2008 but for a points deduction for fighting, which left him short in the final tally.
Both brilliant and boasting an array of skills, they are different breeds of fullback.
As well as his scything speed, Slater thinks his way to the tryline while the elusive Hayne mesmerises the defence with his dancing feet.
Slater is as safe as Hayne is dangerous.
Both teams wouldn’t trade them for another but who’s the best? Next Sunday the answer should be known.

watching hayne and Slater bring a smile to your face the way they play the game. I am not sure you have to love understand or like rugby league to appreciate their skills. inglis ain’t too bad either. There is nothing wrong playing to entertain a crowd. Slater pure speed and for a small man surprising power attacks the ball and gap, hayne full of youthful arrogance and understated power backs away at speed coasts across field always watching for a defender to rush up out of line to create a staggered defence.
Slater I think is actually safer under the high ball. Hayne a better kicking game.
Both a spectator’s delight.
