Steve Waugh is among three Australians inducted to the International Cricket Council (ICC) Hall of Fame.

The retired Australian captain joined leg-spinner Clarrie Grimmett and batsman Victor Trumper alongside Pakistan paceman Wasim Akram and late England opener Herbert Sutcliffe as new inductees announced on Wednesday.

“It is a great honour to be inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame and to see my name feature alongside such greats of the game including the likes of Don Bradman,” Waugh said.

“To be named in the new five inductions this year alongside fellow Australians Victor Trumper and Clarrie Grimmett is something I wouldn’t have imagined for myself when I first started playing for Australia.”

The five newcomers brought the total number of players in the Hall of Fame to 60.

Inductees are selected from a long list of nominations by all 33 living members of the Hall of Fame along with ICC management.

A nominations committee selects a short list of 10 names, which are then voted on by an “academy” including ICC President David Morgan, cricket and media representatives and Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations chief executive Tim May.

Grimmett’s son, Vic, said he was “tickled pink” by the honour for his father, who died in 1980.

“Dad was quite shy and reserved but he was a lovely man who would have been delighted with this award,” he said.

“This is very special.”

Speaking about his late grandfather, Victor Trumper III said: “I read everything about my grandfather in his memorabilia.

“He achieved some great things in his personal and cricket life.

“He led a very selfless life and never chased fame, but took great pride in what he achieved.”

Richie Benaud, Allan Border, Greg Chappell and Ian Chappell are also in the Hall of Fame.
