Twelfth A-League license holders, Sydney Rovers have made significant strides this week by selecting their club name, colours and logo.
The team will be decked out in red, white, and black, similar to the old Blacktown City colours (in respect to the Sydney Rover’s Chairman, who had close ties with the club), to be worn in a vertical pattern.
As part of an over-riding philosophy to consult fans at a grassroots level, market research undertaken by the club suggested that fans did not a prefix with ‘West’ or ‘Western’ it. As they note: “You’ve told us you want the club to represent all of Sydney and that you know that the club is going to be based in the West of Sydney.”
The club has asked the FFA to register the name, colours and logo. So the big decisions have been made.
What do you think about their choices?

I like it. A real football name instead of another cringe-worthy American style number.

A real football name would include the use of animal references.
How about
The Launceston Wildebeests ?

Funny how you blame us instead of your own country that has these names in the two biggest leagues.

Which names ?
Rovers and Athletic ???
It is my contention that you should use names that fit the environment.
In Australia, animal names make more sense than 19th century English club names.
How about
The Melbourne Wombats
or
The Manly Stoats
or
The Tasmanian Devils

Does this mean there will be a “sister club” arrangement with Blackburn Rovers? I hope it does, so we can see Emerton and Grella given an easier path back to the A-League, possibly on loans.

Sydney Rovers? No imagination.
Colours are fine and logo has stars, so why not Sydney Stars, has a nice rhyme to it.

Nail – Head.
All this talk about St Kilda (where did they get it? Come on keyboard warriors – do your ‘research’), English/Aussie, MR companies etc… is all third order stuff. The Australian heartland of the greatest single expression of human culture is about to get an A-League club. THAT is the real story and it is music to my ears as a Melbourne resident. I wish them well – to the point they do not ever defeat MVFC.

Looks way to much like the St Kilda Logo…I would be surprised if that logo came up as the final…looks like it was put together by an amateur using Microsoft Paint

It has a shield shape (fairly generic logo item there) and apart from that the same colors.
That’s the end of the similarities I can see.
St kilda’s logo looks more like a scholl badge than a football team logo.

The FFA are beginning to make bad decisions. Expansion is too rushed and the league is heading in the direction of the NSL. Bad signs.

i would have to disagree, i am almost certain i know what ffa is trying to do. if you havent noticed the decisions regarding football australia have bene brilliant but the a league decisions are questionable. the ffa is doing this as its good for the development of the game not necessarily the league. they introduced small sided football, a national curriculum, 4-3-3, project 22 etc all this is brilliant for our future national teams, im pretty sure they keep expanding so our sport has a presence in greater territory.
im not worried about crowds because most ppl know the standard is questionable, it will improve in 10 years when we see the ffa’s above mentioned changes take effect. most of the a-leaguers grew up in the outdated system used before. that means low technical level which means less attendances. we should be going fairly well by 2019 for now keep expanding

Sorry but Project 22 is rubbish, Football NSW is still run by people from NSL days and is very politically based.

melbvictory87,
How is building another Melbourne club expanding the territory? Maybe you could argue so with West Sydney, but not Melbourne.
I like the idea of 2-club cities. It makes the rivalry and derbies mouthwatering. But I, like Gazz, tend to believe we can wait a few more years for these things. As you say, the standard of the A-League isnt decent yet. So why dilute the talent pool now with more teams?
I disagree with expansion at this stage, especially in Melbourne. The FFA should have a policy of consolidation.

“The standard of the A-League isn’t decent yet”
???????????????????????????????????????
Its not EPL or La Liga standard sure, but to say its “not decent” is drawing a long bow. I see periods of play in the A-League that would be thoroughly competitive with mid and lower ladder teams in France’s Ligue 1, my new ‘home’ league….
