An active trade week is on the cards

- AFL, Barry Hall, Brendan Fevola, brock mclean, Carlton, Josh Gibson, Shaun Burgoyne, trade week
What is going on here? Trade week begins today and we’ve already got Brock McLean moving on, Barry Hall hanging out at the kennel, Josh Gibson and Shaun Burgoyne looking almost Hawthorn-bound and even Brendan Fevola has made it onto the market.
Last year, only six players moved clubs in the trade period. The big, blockbuster trade that pushed the 2pm deadline to its utter limits was – wait for it – Robbie Warnock moving from Fremantle to Carlton!
This year, you can already name five likely trades before the week has begun.
And that’s without having to throw in the ruckmen that could be moved on, like Darren Jolly and Mark Seaby, to name a couple. Or names like Andrew Lovett and Bradd Dalziell, or the host of others discontent at their current clubs.
So put away your free agency protest plans, forget the annual whinge over player movement and go grab that copy of the AFL Prospectus you bought in March purely because you thought you had a chance of winning Dream Team this year.
Because it’s trade week, just not as you know it.
McLean’s move from Melbourne to Carlton in exchange for a first-round draft pick is likely to be the first trade rubber-stamped. Hall’s move from Sydney to the Western Bulldogs could follow, although it doesn’t appear as though an agreement has been struck between clubs just yet.
Moving the likes of Essendon’s Lovett – who is seeking out for the second year in a row – and Brisbane’s Dalziell – who wants to return to Western Australia – may be dependent on what other trades take place.
The same can be said for Fremantle’s Marcus Drum, who appears Victoria-bound, and Richmond’s Andrew Raines, who wants to head back to Queensland. St Kilda’s Luke Ball is another that could be thrown into the mix, depending on what’s being offered.
As for Hawthorn, well, they are a club that can certainly talk the talk. But following on from last year’s failed attempt to nab Ryan O’Keefe from the Swans, you have to wonder if they can walk the walk.
They are in need of a key defender and Gibson tends to fit that bill. North’s new coach Brad Scott has confirmed that he won’t be around next year, and although saying no deal had been reached, president James Brayshaw conceded a week ago it was “highly likely” Gibson would be a Hawk next year.
The acquisition of Burgoyne appears less certain. The Port Adelaide midfielder has nominated Hawthorn as his club of choice, but the deal must be sealed both financially with the player and trade-wise with Port, and other clubs continue to circle.
Of course, the headline-maker this week will be Fev.
He might go to Collingwood. He might go to Brisbane. He might be the subject of an elaborate “this really is your last chance” message and end up staying at Carlton. His situation might put a lot of other deals on hold as clubs wait to see what happens.
Right now, it’s all a bit murky. Rumours have been flying all over the place about where he’ll end up. Who knows how this one will play out?
And as if things weren’t complicated enough, fans must accept the other uncertain aspect of the week ahead – the trades we don’t yet know about. Nobody saw the McLean-to-Carlton move coming, who’s to say there aren’t more deals in the works right now?
One thing that is known for sure is that this trade week is offering something that those in recent years haven’t. It’s called a sense of excitement.
Maybe it is the apparently-shallow draft. Maybe everyone is scared about the Gold Coast. Maybe everyone is scared that the Gold Coast’s access to 17 year-olds is the reason for the apparently-shallow draft.
Whatever it is, trade week hasn’t been this anticipated for some time. I, for one, can’t wait to see what happens.

Looks Like Nick Maxwell may have jumped the gun declaring Collingwood have no interest in Fevola. Been severely reprimanded publicially and no doubt in private by the club.
Fev a magpie??? takes some gettting use to.

I agree with Maxwell. Fevola might be a very talented and accomplished player, but his consistent poor behaviour and anti-social demeanor demonstrates that he is not a good club man. The Pies should continue to recruit talented team players, keep developing the young players, nurture the reputation for professionalism and social responsibility, be a supportive environment where lively young men can successfully establish their careers and their adulthood and let Fevola go whereever he wants, except Collingwood.

I’m starting to wonder whether like Cousins who was ingored initially and only picked up at the last minute that Fev has to go through a rejection phase as clubs shun him due to his poor off field record. Eventually public opinion/club members may soften as Fev’s ego takes a battering and with humility there is genuine change in behavior beleived possible.
At the moment no club wants a bad egg like him. Will sentiment change in a few weeks/months?

Yes. The comparison with Cousins is interesting. In the end the only team which would take him,was one with a failed strategy for success which was, it turns out, clutching at straws in desperation. Cousins remains a great player, but one who, in my opinion at least, has a sour smell about him. What a way to sully the image of a club with such a great tradition. Fevola’s been contrite before. We’ve seen how insincere he’s been in the past. I would not want to see him at Collingwood, no matter how humble and contrite he may subsequently appear. He should stay at Carlton, reform himself, and spend the rest of his career atoning to his teammates.

while both have substance issues one big difference between cousins and fev is the price tag, and as such the risk. if cousins had failed he’d have cost the tiges next to nothing and Ben himself would have been the villian of the tale with the club innocent victims for attempting to help an ill young man. Turns out he was one of their very few success stories this year.
Fev has a massive price tag so requires a big committment by a recuiting club. Personally i can’t seem him playing anywhere other than the blues next year.

There’s a good chance Campbell wil retire so the Hawks need to somehow find the trades to try and land a ruckman, Burgoyne & Gibson. So I would presume at least one of McGlynn or Kennedy will depart. Certainly given how the Hawks need a ruckman and a key defender it would be amazing if they didn’t trade.
Regarding Fev I think he will stay at Carlton because no-one would give up a top 10 pick for an ageing player who can only play full-forward. Certainly not Collingwood who havn’t really landed high profile players under the Malthouse regime.

When your other options are Jack ‘i get 3 kicks a fortnight’ Anthony and Travis Cloke, worst forward in the league, why wouldn’t Collingwood take Fev.

I’d like to see Luke Ball at Collingwood, beefing up that midfield and providing an additional ball getting capability to that provided by Scott Pendlebury. Add Darren Jolley and suddenly we’ve added a strong midfield to a great defence. Bye Bye Chris Bryan, Anthony Corrie and Shannon Cox. Fraser as a tall forward and kicking lessons for Clokie.

Robert Walls did a clip show of one game where he basically accused Fev of not trying. It showed a match where over and over again Fev’s opponent was able to get the ball with little pressure from Fevola or Fevola didn’t chase and it ended up costing Carlton goals.
Could just be the environment at Carlton though where he is the star and treated like it. Perhaps if he went to a team where he wasn’t the big fish (say Hawthorn) he would really shine and lift. He might feel he no longer has the credibility to be the goose if big Buddy is outshining him ont he field and being a better team man.
Wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up staying at Carlton though. That salary is hard to fit under the cap.

Agree. The $700K per year salary for the next 2 years (ave) is a big anchor, Cousins for example did not have dangling around his neck.
Re the footage of Fevola not trying, that is quite damning, it is the tradtional full forward view from ten years ago where the FF wasnt expected to chase but just focus totally on forward attack, these days tackling pressure from forwards and zoning up is expected, demanded even.

I think Fev will only go either to Brissy for Bradshaw cause the Liond can afford it and will realise they’re not losing much or to St Kilda because they could really use him to allow Kozie to go in ruck (given the ages of King & Gardiner) and they have Luke Ball to play with. Other than those 2 I suspect Fev will stay at Carlton

Somewhere I saw it today that Brisbane have secured Bradshaw. Has anyone heard anything on that front?
Carlton don’t want Collingwood to get Fev as they fear he’d help ‘em win a flag.

I am a Carlton supporter and as such am embarrassed for the mighty Blue’s but, we are forgetting some one here.
The “Fev”. I think he has been punished by the club, sponsors etc however, what is the difference between the AFL helping Ben Cousins and not offering the same to Fev?
Surely he deserves some consideration, he disgraced himself as well as the club. I have had the same expierence with beer where I have acted like an idiot and I almost lost the most important thing in the world to me…..my wife because I wouldn’t remember what I had done. I gave up the beer, I have an alternative drink and I rarely get drunk but most importantly, I still have my beautiful wife.
So come on Blues, give him one more chance, make a deal that he has his pay cut to minimum payment for the forst three times then maybe on the fourth, he stays on that level for the rest of the season.
Come on Fev you know you can do it do it for you firstly, then your family, then the club and the fans you excite week in week out.
Regards,
Brett Clements

Problem is Brett, Cousins was banned from the game for 12 months before some form of redemption was granted. Fevola’s drunken antics are barely two weeks old.
no-one denies his great talent but unfortuantely from the neck up it dissipates.

Josh Gibson from North to Hawthorn.
Staker from Eagles to Brisbane.
Seaby from Eagles to Sydney.
Buchanon from Swans to Brisbane.
Raines from Richmond to Brisbane.

yeah defintely going to be a big week. Last years a was a bit of a fizzer.
There is a general beleif that trades are more likely as this years draft is shallower due to the modification of the age limit and GC’s concessions.
Therefore this is a real window for the clubs to trade and there are also a couple of big names looking for a new home: Fevola, Hall, lovett, etc.

North have been far, far more co-operative to get Gibson to Hawthorn than they ever were to …. in the end block….getting Jade Rawlings to North (given he ended up going via the ‘Cape’….well, the Kennel down Geelong Rd).
Ruddy Hawthorn…..at any rate, they get an undersized but brave defender with no right foot……..North on the other hand are pretty chuffed with how Nathan Grima and Scott Thompson are coming along.

He retired about a month too soon, when late in the season the AFL released the media release stating that umpires would clamp down on defenders ‘mishandling’ forwards (after the Carl v North game with Fev getting a bit of attention from Scotty Thompson).
Looking at that at the time, I could only think of the attention that big bad Barry had to put up with from B.Staker last year and even against Hawthorn this year. Just a tad bit of reasonable ‘protection’ and half his ‘issues’ would never have been an issue.

I hope he kicks a lot of goals for the Bulldogs.

I dont know if they had a lot of choice to be honest. The dumb jab on Rutten (Adelaide) was inexcusable – the final straw for the Swans leadership group.
Moving him on was the only choice, fresh start somewhere else.
One thing that always struck me as a little odd is that the Swannies rarely rushed in to “fly the flag” for Hall as a team-mate. No doubt they thought he can look after himself, but sometimes you need a team-mate to give a bit back to the defender giving your full forward a hard time. A Swan defintely should have stepped in betwen Sam Mitchell (Hawthorn) and Hall when he gave away 3 x 50 metres.
The Swans may gone too far down the ‘goody two shoes’ path. The Western bulldogs have a bit of mongrel about them, I think you’ll see a Will Minson standing to toe to toe with the next defender trying to rile Hally up.
It was no doubt a shame but big bad bazza couldn’t right the ship, time for a new port.

Very strange hardly anyone stuck up for him after the game either. Honest I guess but still strange.
Going back to Melbourne might reignite his love for the game and ge rid of the silly talk about “boxing”.
Acker and Hall in the one team probably makes them one of thebest Vic teams marketing wise up north. Swans vs Bulldogs should be one of their bigger crowds now.
