So it’s been just over a week since we joined the conversation on our new club, the Sydney Rovers FC. What a fantastic week it’s been. We’ve heard the good, the bad and the ugly, which is exactly the way it should be.
We’ve been following the conversations but figured, given our own time constraints, we would weigh in from time to time, not every day.
There seem to be a couple of questions hanging out there that we think we can answer:
1) Our Name.
Anytime you create a name you invite multiple responses. We want to thank all of you who have given us your view. However, we have decided that we’re not going to be known as a club with a non-football related name.
So those of you who want us called The Octopuses, The Buffalos, The Rhinos, The Metros, The Kickers, The Strikers….. blah, blah, blah. Sorry to disappoint you, but we are going to stick to our strategy of remaining traditional.
Over the past few days, the name Sydney Rovers FC has begun to take hold. The media has been overwhelmingly positive, and while not everyone ever agrees totally with a name, initially we’ve had enough feedback to tell us we’re on the right track.
2) The Stars
The idea behind them is really simple. The star on the left represents the Southern sky, the star in the middle represents the Western sky, and the star on the right represents the Northern sky.
Nothing more, nothing less.
It’s not a hybrid version of the Southern Cross, nor is it a constellation of any sort. It’s just three stars representing the broader north, west and south of our city.
3) The Colours
Red, white and black. Yep as strange as it may seem, we think it’s nice to have a subtle link to the great clubs of the past, like Western Suburbs and Blacktown City, who also carried these colours in one combination or another.
We also know from a commercial point of view, these three colours are a very powerful palette combination.
We are moving forward to look at how we will commercialize our look. We want to thank all you guys who have suggested various strip options to us.
In the coming months, we’ll continue to refine our thinking and we’ll let you know where we end up.
So the journey has started, and we have many decisions to take in the coming months. From time to time, we’ll check back in and let you know the progress we are making.
We said from the outset we wanted to build a club that was inclusive, and by that, we mean we want it to be a club for every football fan in Sydney. To this point we know we have to be prepared to listen and learn as we go.
And we intend to live up to this fact.

Pip I agree. Man Utd and Man City, Real and Athletico, Arsenal/ Chelski and Spurs/ Hammers, Everton and Liverpool, Bayern and Borussia Monchengladbach, Barca and Espanyol etc etc… am not sure where in the game that rivalries truly extend past the dominant team (and the history attached to it) and at this stage MV and SFC have the established rivalry.
No artifical way to bring on a rivalry (such as 30,000 watching their team lose 3-0 (you failed to mention this one), or SFC loss in season one).
the rivalries are more than just because the team is from a “region” – there has to be more to it than that even though this is the startof it all (ie barca and real with historical tensions). Maybe to kick start things Rovers could buy Hernandez and partner him with Fred? should spice up the first few “clashes”.

That’s right – it can’t be manufactured – it just happens.
MV also has a strong rivalry with AU. A combination of the aussie rules rivalry that already existed, the fact that Adelaide people have a chip on their shoulder, and the fact that we’ve played in two grand finals against each other in first four seasons.
Don’t forget that MV v AU drew 40,000 in the 2nd season, and that all four Etihad finals between the two clubs have drawn 45,000 plus.
3-0? Well, it pales against 5-0 to be honest.

Ian
Congratulations on your winning bid… Also thank you for coming on our forum to discuss the WST.
Your shirt … I am playing in the World Masters and we have a black shirt shorts and socks… the NSW Uni shirt … sounds crap but looks stunning and in keeping with the Blacktown Demons colours…
The names OK … myself I would prefer a more Australian name … Demons, Riders, …
Good luck with uniting the tribes …
For anyone doubting the Western Sydney team move … please understand the following ….. eight former NSL clubs, numerous state leagues clubs, 5 Football association, close to 100, 000 registered players… has produced more Socceroos, Coaches, NSL, & A-League players than any other region…
Just for the record, Marconi, Sydney United, Olympic, Blacktown Demons, Melta Eagles, Penrith City, White Eagles, Parramatta Power, some for more years than others , plus very traditionally strong State Teams in, Bankstown, Campbelltown, Fairfield City, Liverpool City. All have there infrastructure in place aside from Parramatta Power (who where owned by a RL club). The associations also have in place a massive infrastructure. In addition the NSW Football Association is relocating from Blacktown to Riverstone (about 8 KL’s) but to a more rural setting and are planning to build a 40 million dollar training academy…
If and it is a huge if a massive if… but if Rovers could ever unite these various tribes behind them.. then the Rovers will IMO become Australia’s biggest club within a few years.. biggest from every point … crowds, sponsors, etc…
The task of uniting the old NSL clubs, the state league clubs, and the Associations ,… is massive , nay mega massive squared… however if they could … boy would it be a huge club…
Ian I pray you and your team can bring this together…

Well, when a club goes as far back as 1873 (which isn’t really all that old by the standard of Australian Football, but old enough), it’s sort of in the dim, dark ages.
It’s not the colours, it’s the fact that they have been laid out in the exact same manner as the St Kilda guernsey.
If they had done a red sash on a black background, I imagine redb would be here telling us that it’s a rip off of a jumper he knows only too well.

The Saints colours were originally Red Black and Yellow however these were changed during the war since they were also the national colours of Germany.
St Kilda is a rock north of Scotland near the Orkneys I beieve, so whether or not a correlation exists here i don’t know. i would not want to ever see the great historical gurnsey changed and must say these new ones devised for away games are very tacky indeed. I personally reckon the worst gurnsey in the League has to be West Coasts.

St. Kilda got it’s name after a ship called – The Lady of St. Kilda – was wrecked off the beach there, circa 1850.

it’s the other way round – St Kilda was red, white and black from its inception, and changed to red, yellow and black during the first world war (till 1922), but then went back to red, white and black. The current design has been unchanged, more or less, since 1923.

What’s all this nonsense about St KIlda –
Their original colours were red, yellow and black until the WW1.
They changed it to white because the so they did not want to look like Krauts.
In the end, who cares if the Rovers strip looks like the Saints! Its a football strip not an AFL strip.
This whole jersey debate is irrelevant.

not to graphic design nufties it aint.
The colours and jumper/jersey is significant in developing a team’s presence in the marketplace, a place they share with 16 NRL, 16 AFL, 10 HAL, 4 Super 14, 8 NBL teams, etc.

But it’s west Sydney so they really only have to worry about
16 NRL teams (all well known), 10 HAL teams (jersey clash) 1 AFL team, 2 Super 14 teams (Tahs and Reds) and zero to 1 NBL teams. Not sure if Razorbacks are in the comp?
The Newtown jets would have to rank above a melbourne based AFL team in regards to branding concerns. The fact it creates some interest in Melbourne probably wouldn’t hurt although aren’t Saints one of those so so teams that don’t really get people stirred up (like the north Sydney bears) becasue they don’t cheat much or win many flags.

RedB I just think its a fact that St kilda don’t really have brand pressence inside the West Sydney region. I doubt their shifting a lot of jerseys at Blacktown Rebel sports so I don’t think there will be many fans rocking up to Parrmatta Stadium thinking “yes, I just saved big time because I can use my Saints merchandise instead of buying a rovers kit”
Likewise I don’t think St Kilda is going to have to worry about their fans rocking up to the MCG in their Rovers gear anytime soon.
There is only so many things you can worry about and I don’t think a clash of badge looking like the Jersey of a team with little to zero market presence in your home market and playing a different sport is worth worrying about.
Your kit is never going to be 100% original because there are allready so many teams out there.

as I said to Republican – the colours were red, white and black from day one, St Kilda changed the white to yellow during the Great War, till 1922, then reverted to their old colours. The current design goes back to 1923.
In the end, Sydney Rovers will be a rival club – so I don’t give a damn what their colours are – but I simply said that from what I’ve seen, it looks like a rip off of St Kilda – if they end up doing something different with the colours – good luck to them.
I said from day one that I didn’t mind the name: Sydney Rovers.
Either way – it doesn’t really matter what I think – I won’t be cheering them on!!

Pippinu.
That sounds more accurate, I was a bit sketchy on this particular piece of history but remember hearing the war changed things for the club. Holbrook on the Hume was first named German Town however they have not reverted to the traditional namesake. Anyway, I quite like the old Saints gurnsey as I do most of the traditional ones however the new designs along with more contemporary club songs are bit corporately guady to say the least.
Art Sappire, try not to get your nickers in a knot mate, its just interesting to share these wee bits of historical trivia with like minded punters despite the deviations that must be endured along the way. I will let you get back to the serious business of discussing all that’s to do with the ‘rooond ball’ game.
