Every year around this time, there are awards, such as the Brownlow and the Daily M. So here is the best and worst of them with the 2009 Sporties.
Australian Sports Person of the Year
Winner: Garry Ablett (Geelong)
No doubt he was the best this year. While it’s hard to compare sports, he simply stood out from the rest as shown by winning nearly everything on offer. 30 possessions in more than 11 games has never been done before. He was the best.
Runners Up
Steve Hooker: (World Championship Gold on one leg)
Jaryad Hayne: (Simply outstanding. Had the ball on a string)
Anna Meares (For still being able to ride)
Jessica Schipper (Saving face for Australia at World Swimming Championships)
International Sports Star of the Year:
Winner: Usain Bolt
Why you ask? Three world golds and two world records. It is as simple as that. Don’t be surprised to see the record fall in Delhi next year.
Runners Up
Michael Phelps (Lots of gold at a poor world swimming championships)
Christiano Ronaldo (Enough said)
Team of the Year:
Winner: Geelong
They were done and out in Round 22. People said it was over, yet someone forgot to tell Geelong. Simply too good with more to come.
Runners Up
Melbourne Storm (Four Grand Finals is a mean feat)
Qantas Socceroos (Look out South Africa 2010 was one of the first to get there)
Melbourne Vixens (Won the ANZ Championship in a high class field)
Central Districts (8 out of 10 in any competition is great)
Improvers of the Year
Winner: Parramatta Eels
14th at one stage, before a remarkable recovery. 2010 is looking good with the old guard gone.
Runners Up
Adelaide Crows (Much maligned now the fourth best side in the league)
Aussie Cricket Team (Despite Ashes loss, a lot more promising than 12 months ago)
Brisbane Lions (Michael Voss is a genius)
SA Redbacks (Third in both comps. No longer can mediocrity be considered)
Disappointment Of The Year (Team)
Winner: Qantas Wallabies
Played like a country Western Australian country side. After good performance last year, lost nearly all respect. 2010 is so crucial for the World Cup. Too many overrated players in the squad that need to leave.
Runners Up
Penrith Panthers (Started well but choked at the end)
Port Adelaide Power (Look like an absolute rabble on and off the field)
Silence Lotto Cycling (Made Evans look like an Amateurish)
Channel Nine (Sacking Fevloa, yet showing his tirade hypocrisy at its best. NRL coverage shocking outside traditional states)
Disappointment Of The Year (Individual)
Winner: Rebecca Wilson
Whatever she touches turns to death. If sport was run by her we would all be in trouble.
Runner Up
Jeff Kennett (Said he would keep quiet, does anyone honestly believe him?)
Brendan Fevloa (Clown. Stop drinking at do what you do best)
Adelaide (The backwards City, cant build a stadium without problems all around it.)
Andrew Hilditch (Unforgivable second Ashes loss and he stays at home, his position needs scrutiny)
Unfair Criticism Of The Year Award
Winner: Ricky Pointing
Was blamed for all wrong that went on in the Ashes series. Pointing can’t be held responsible for Johnson’s bowling, the selectors’ crazy team choices, and so on.
Runners Up
Kelli Underwood (Criticized by those who have never called a match, offer services or shut up)
Matthew Johns (Feminism at its worst. Hung out to dry by those who are weak)
Garry Ablett (He is such a team man. Those who call him selfish are wrong)
Test Cricket (Still the purest form of the game. Leave it alone it will always be here)
Sports Program of the Year
Winner: On the Couch (FOX Sports)
So much fun to watch. Insightful analysis with three great guys running the show
Runners Up
NRL on FOX (With Laurie Daley, it has more nous)
AFL Footy Show (Still strong after fifteen years)
Offsiders (Little known Sunday Morning Show with a great line-up)
Inside Rugby (Makes rugby simple)
The Enough Rope Trophy
NRL and David Gallop.
Too hard to split. Both can survive anything and look likely to. NRL horror offield season (sex dramas, Cronulla extinction, and son on), yet the code saw record TV viewers and crowds.

Josh
Allow me to award you with the Roarer of the year award.
Has anyone ever been able to cover so many sports so equitably on the Roar?
I think not!!!

Without meaning any disrespect to Gary Abblett Jnr. If he sat next to me on the train tomorrow morning I would have no idea who he was. And 30 possessions in more then 11 games… is that bad, should he have more? Or is that good? And I’m sure that if Jarryd Hayne sat in the tram through Melbourne he would only be noticed by NSW and QLD folk on holiday.
It is tough to giver a nationwide award to an athlete when half the country doesn’t really care about them.
So respectfully submit that Steve Hooker and Kurt Fearnley are Australian Sportspersons of the year.
Agree with you about most of the others though, especially Ponting for unfair criticism.

Kurt Fearnley?

Wheelchair athlete.
Triple gold medalist, undefeated so far this year I think.
He is not just on top of his sport, but a terrific bloke to boot.

what sports does a country Western Australian country side play??
Grimmace said | October 13th 2009 @ 8:38am | Report comment
Good effort covering so many sports. Well done for even attempting it.
I recon you’re spot on with a fair bit of it. Bit of an AFL bias though. I’m with Mark, I’ve no idea who Gary Ablett is. Kelli Underwood?

Kelli Underwood sounds hot – is she?

My only criticism of Gary Ablett Jnr is that he was born south of the border. Watching that guy in traffic, with his ability to keep his feet and composure and distribute accurately, makes me think that he’d be a great fly half, if only he’d been born around Wagga Wagga or north of there.
Pippinu said | October 13th 2009 @ 9:18am | Report comment
Wagga is the Australian epicentre of sports performance.

The England Cricket Team deserves a mention. After all they won the Ashes and outplayed Australia in most of the games.
Lets not forget motor sports (Mark Webbers 1st F1 victory and Aust first since Allan Jones)

Garry Ablett is a deserved winner, great season, but importantly stood up on the biggest stage in the Grand Final when it really counted and got the Cats home.
Sports Programs: Special mention – ‘Before the Bounce’ on Fox, very under-rated.
Criticism of Kelli Underwood is feminisim blown out of proportion as well. She has a lousy voice, get over it.
The other disppointment of the year is that our National rugby team are known as the ‘QANTAS’ Wallabies.
Special mention on disappointment stakes – Richmond must rank highly given the hype around the Ben Cousins recruitment, first game of the season, 86,000 at the G and they got flogged by more than ten goals whilst Cousins injured his hammy.

I thought Cousins had a fair season though…and then he cops it for costing Richmond a better draft pick!
Send him to Brisbane, we like our players to win games.
Redb said | October 13th 2009 @ 11:08am | Report comment
Cousins was serviceable for Richmond no doubt, but I think that first game had such hype with 5,000 people at training before a sherrin is bounced that the first game of the season was a big disappointment for the Tigers.

“disappointment” is the Tiggers’ middle name
BigAl said | October 13th 2009 @ 12:40pm | Report comment
I believe there is quite a big push to Have Richmond’s ‘official nickname’ changed from The Tigers to…
the tiggers !
