Every year around this time, there are awards, such as the Brownlow and the Daily M. So here is the best and worst of them with the 2009 Sporties.
Australian Sports Person of the Year
Winner: Garry Ablett (Geelong)
No doubt he was the best this year. While it’s hard to compare sports, he simply stood out from the rest as shown by winning nearly everything on offer. 30 possessions in more than 11 games has never been done before. He was the best.
Runners Up
Steve Hooker: (World Championship Gold on one leg)
Jaryad Hayne: (Simply outstanding. Had the ball on a string)
Anna Meares (For still being able to ride)
Jessica Schipper (Saving face for Australia at World Swimming Championships)
International Sports Star of the Year:
Winner: Usain Bolt
Why you ask? Three world golds and two world records. It is as simple as that. Don’t be surprised to see the record fall in Delhi next year.
Runners Up
Michael Phelps (Lots of gold at a poor world swimming championships)
Christiano Ronaldo (Enough said)
Team of the Year:
Winner: Geelong
They were done and out in Round 22. People said it was over, yet someone forgot to tell Geelong. Simply too good with more to come.
Runners Up
Melbourne Storm (Four Grand Finals is a mean feat)
Qantas Socceroos (Look out South Africa 2010 was one of the first to get there)
Melbourne Vixens (Won the ANZ Championship in a high class field)
Central Districts (8 out of 10 in any competition is great)
Improvers of the Year
Winner: Parramatta Eels
14th at one stage, before a remarkable recovery. 2010 is looking good with the old guard gone.
Runners Up
Adelaide Crows (Much maligned now the fourth best side in the league)
Aussie Cricket Team (Despite Ashes loss, a lot more promising than 12 months ago)
Brisbane Lions (Michael Voss is a genius)
SA Redbacks (Third in both comps. No longer can mediocrity be considered)
Disappointment Of The Year (Team)
Winner: Qantas Wallabies
Played like a country Western Australian country side. After good performance last year, lost nearly all respect. 2010 is so crucial for the World Cup. Too many overrated players in the squad that need to leave.
Runners Up
Penrith Panthers (Started well but choked at the end)
Port Adelaide Power (Look like an absolute rabble on and off the field)
Silence Lotto Cycling (Made Evans look like an Amateurish)
Channel Nine (Sacking Fevloa, yet showing his tirade hypocrisy at its best. NRL coverage shocking outside traditional states)
Disappointment Of The Year (Individual)
Winner: Rebecca Wilson
Whatever she touches turns to death. If sport was run by her we would all be in trouble.
Runner Up
Jeff Kennett (Said he would keep quiet, does anyone honestly believe him?)
Brendan Fevloa (Clown. Stop drinking at do what you do best)
Adelaide (The backwards City, cant build a stadium without problems all around it.)
Andrew Hilditch (Unforgivable second Ashes loss and he stays at home, his position needs scrutiny)
Unfair Criticism Of The Year Award
Winner: Ricky Pointing
Was blamed for all wrong that went on in the Ashes series. Pointing can’t be held responsible for Johnson’s bowling, the selectors’ crazy team choices, and so on.
Runners Up
Kelli Underwood (Criticized by those who have never called a match, offer services or shut up)
Matthew Johns (Feminism at its worst. Hung out to dry by those who are weak)
Garry Ablett (He is such a team man. Those who call him selfish are wrong)
Test Cricket (Still the purest form of the game. Leave it alone it will always be here)
Sports Program of the Year
Winner: On the Couch (FOX Sports)
So much fun to watch. Insightful analysis with three great guys running the show
Runners Up
NRL on FOX (With Laurie Daley, it has more nous)
AFL Footy Show (Still strong after fifteen years)
Offsiders (Little known Sunday Morning Show with a great line-up)
Inside Rugby (Makes rugby simple)
The Enough Rope Trophy
NRL and David Gallop.
Too hard to split. Both can survive anything and look likely to. NRL horror offield season (sex dramas, Cronulla extinction, and son on), yet the code saw record TV viewers and crowds.

Seems fair enough to me. I haven’t seen as much of Gary Ablett as others but he is a class act, like Paul Roos someone everyone can enjoy watching, even if it is not your game at all. If Hayne had of won Parramatta the GF then it could have been a tie but he didn’t.

“Aussie Cricket Team (Despite Ashes loss, a lot more promising than 12 months ago)” – Are we? In that time we have lost a series to India, South Africa and England. For the first time in my lifetime we lost more Tests than we won. I certainly don’t feel much better!

Offsiders is far too biased, every week they have 3 AFL supporters and an AFL supporting producer – corner the lone RL representative and hammer them with everything that is wrong with the NRL. Every week, same thing.

Except for this week where they gave it to the AFL and the Melbourne media for being so slack about the fevola affair.

AndyRoo,
yeah kinda put that misconception to bed.
I thought Magnay must have selective memory though.
Fevola hasnt been charged but she wants the AFL to ban him like one NRL bloke in the past, yet Greg Inglis who has been charged with assault was allowed to play all the NRL finals and has been picked to play overseas?
I enjoy the Offsiders when Caro Wilson and Masters are not involved. It does make good theatre at times, but some of the comments from both are too defensive.

I agree that that does happen on occasion – it is crap that the show can do without – the concept is a good one though, and most of the shows are pretty good for the most part.

Good article except how are Adelaide the fourth best side in the AFL?
They got eliminated in the second week of the finals to the side that finished fourth in the home and away season, meaning they are the fifth best side in the AFL. Minor point I know, but it frustrated me.

if we’re going to pick a footballer for sportsperson of the year how about Billy Slater? Premiership Winner, Clive Churchill medalist, Australian & QLD fullback, and one that tips the scales-he whipped everyone’s arse in the Gillette Athlete of the Year TV contest plus he would be known now in Melbourne!

1. I am sorry to anyone who thinks this is AFL biased. I have just gone on my opinion. While I live in SA, I have tried hard to award those who deserve it from all codes (And yes Billy Slater should be in there somewhere you are all right)
2. Yes the Aussie cricket team lost 3 series but remember they won in South Africa when they were not expected to.
3. The only reason the Enlgish don’t win an award is because there English (Just kidding, just wait and watch them fall again)
4. Garry Ablett may not be known Nationwide but neither’s Billy Slater
Anymore comments from now can you suggest people who deserve an award who i didnt mention (You can creatre a new award) I would love to hear them.
Thank you to Pippinu for you Roarer of the Year Award

Some of the criticism of Ponting was unwarranted. He can’t be blamed for Johnson’s bowling, or Hussey deciding that an off stump line is a good line to leave the ball, or Hughes suddenly doing a Bevan and finding himself unable to play the short ball. He was the one, however, who turned to Johnson at crucial times when other bowlers were also fresh, and the captain does (traditionally) get more say in selection when on tour. Whether he got much say this time, I have no idea.

Improvers of the Year : Parramatta? I would probably go Bulldogs (little biased), but given they finished 16th last season on the table, and then 2nd this year (and would have been 1st had 2 points not be deducted from them), it’s a remarkable turnaround for any club to perform.
Parra really just did what a lot of teams do at times, get on a roll for a few months. Just they were lucky enough that they were able to secure 8th place on the table to sneak into the finals, which really is a subject for another debate.

I’m afraid I just don’t appreciate triathlon and hence trathletes at all !
To me they’re just ‘sub-prime’ runners who have taught themselves to swim & ride a bike a bit.

A bit!
The swim is nearly 4km and they do it in under an hour! That is 45 seconds per 50m.
And then they do 180 km in just over 4 hours in a freaking lava field at a pace just over 40kph!
I would hardly call that swimming and riding a bit.
