Fired-up Bleiberg declares sky’s the limit for Coast

Gold Coast coach Miron Bleiberg has declared the “sky is the limit” for his A-League rookies despite their lucky 2-1 escape act over a spirited Perth Glory.

The win, played out in front of another disappointing Skilled Park turnout of 4,509, put the Coast back on top of on the A-League ladder after Sydney FC fell 2-1 to Adelaide on Saturday night.

Showman Bleiberg, though, was having nothing to do with suggestions his players got out of jail against Perth who outplayed them for most of the clash.

“Everybody expects us to apologise why every week we are not playing like Barcelona or Real Madrid,” said Bleiberg.

“We’ll keep that (form) for the grand final.”

Star striker Jason Culina backed his coach, saying the Socceroos cop it like United but “just keep winning”.

“(The Socceroos) get the result and at the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about,” said Culina after his third game in eight days.

Even a draw would have been a tough result for Perth to swallow given the scoring opportunities they missed – including Branko Jelic’s controversial offside call in the 67th minute which replays did not support.

Glory coach David Mitchell was critical of the Jelic call.

“We got the (second half) goal we justly deserved and then a couple of decisions went against us that cost us the game,” he said.

“The linesman or referees are supposed to go in favour of the strikers.

“Certainly when you are level, you’re onside.

“But I think there’s a lot of grey mist with decisions with offside.

“I think FIFA or the FFA should come out and made a rule saying if there is clear daylight between the striker and the defender then you’re offside because this level is confusing everyone.

“Linesmen tend to favour the defenders and that’s unfortunate.”

Bleiberg didn’t wait for questions from journalists before going off at the press conference.

“Everybody asks me questions like if I have to apologise. I don’t apologise,” he fired.

“Out of 11, we are probably top of the ladder (for) eight rounds. Sydney were number one for one week and all of a sudden all the media are asking are Sydney the real deal or no real deal.

“We don’t have to cry. We are the new boys on the block and we are leading the competition, we are back on top and the sky is the limit.

“I’m happy. Do you want me to apologise?

“Does Alex Ferguson apologise? No. I’m not Alex, I (don’t) even clean his shoes.

“And I am not even (newly appointed Brisbane coach) Ange Postecoglou.”

Bleiberg, who was left fuming a few weeks ago after Melbourne captain Kevin Muscat’s double penalty-shot goal cost his side a win, didn’t care about the Jelic controversy.

“I don’t care. Goals, yellow cards, red cards we didn’t deserve, they all balance out at the end of the year,” he said.

“I’m not sure they were being robbed, I didn’t see the replay.

“Maybe it’s line, maybe it’s not line, that’s football.”
