Bare bones Australia have 13 players to choose from
By AAP, 5 Nov 2009 AAP is a Roar Pro
Captain Ricky Ponting has admitted his attack will be down to the “bare bones” for today’s match against India, before allrounder Andrew McDonald and paceman Burt Cockley arrive to replace Moises Henriques and Peter Siddle.
Tim Paine, Brett Lee and James Hopes had already flown home before Siddle and Henriques were sent back to Australia on consecutive days.
“It will be (bare bones), yeah,” said Ponting.
“There’s every chance that (Clint) McKay could come straight into the XI.
“We’ve got a few problems but we’ll keep trying our best and we’ll keep trying to find ways to get the job done.”
McKay and Holland are both a chance to play, though it appears more likely that tour selector David Boon will decide to recall Adam Voges and Ben Hilfenhaus in place of Henriques and Siddle.
India expect to have Gautam Gambhir fit again after he missed the match at Mohali, and should slot him in at No.3 in place of Virat Kohli.
Squads
INDIA: MS Dhoni (capt), Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Dinesh Karthik, Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Harbhajan Singh, Ashish Nehra, Munaf Patel, Sudeep Tyagi, Praveen Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Amit Mishra.
AUSTRALIA: Ricky Ponting (capt), Shaun Marsh, Shane Watson, Michael Hussey, Adam Voges, Cameron White, Graham Manou, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Hauritz, Clint McKay, Jon Holland, Ben Hilfenhaus, Doug Bollinger.

What’s the big deal?
Australia will have 11 players on the field, as will India. The Aussies over there are all good enough to do well, including Clint McKay.
The Aussie just need to improve.
And when oh when will they pick a specialist opener – other than Marsh I mean?

they did James, but then they dropped him after two Ashes Tests….

What is the situation with Stuart Clark? Surely he must be the best fit pace bowler left in the country & still he is not picked. This is despite being a major factor in NSW’s win in the 20/20 Championship. If they just want to keep him fit, then this would be a part excuse, but I don’t get it.

I don’t get a lot of what the selectors do, Bob.
Brett there was another specialist opener they picked for the Ashes series who did well and played all 5 tests. The same guy whose innovation, leadership and batsmanship propelled his team to the world club T20 title. The guy excels in one-day cricket and makes batting look easy compared to most.
We better not pick him. What’s the point?

Katich only averages in the 30′s in one dayers

And he is 34 years old. Why do we keep pushing Katich for the opening role when we have Hughes and Warner at the start of their 20′s who are even more talented?

Burt Cockley….??????
who the eff is Burt Cockley?????
ruddy SCG specialist he is. Got stuff all One Day credentials on his side with 4 list A matches avg just under 40 and economy of 6.87.
To head straight into an Indian series already underway, why not a Nannes, S.Clark or the like who has just recently been bowling in India????
I can only assume they don’t intend to have to use him!!?!?!?

Jameswm, there was a piece in the SMH last week, or early this week, that suggested that the selectors just pick the NSW team plus Ponting, such was obvious strength of the NSW side named. It was as hard to argue with that as it is with you about Katich here. Some of what he did during the CLT20 was phenominal, and yet so simple and even obvious!!

Just glad to see a romping win with the star performances coming from …..
Qld – Watson
WA – Marsh
Tas – Ponting
WA – Hussey
Vic – White
Vic – McKay
how important Clint McKay on debut, first 4 overs `1 for 27, to come back and get 2 for 32 off his next 6 was fantastic. How important was his recent experience in India in the ICL??
which makes one again just ask why Burt Cockley (as good as he might become) is over there so quickly.

Looking into it I think the picked Cockley for his Shield performances he took the most wickets for NSW and averaged 22

Freud – Hughes and Warner “more talented” than Katich? You’re kidding, right?
His age is irrelevant – how old is the bloke who scored 175 against Australia last night?
Dave – Katich played one-dayers earlier in his career, not since his game lifted upon his return to the Aussie team. Look for example at the differences in Matty Hayden’s averages in stage 1 and stage 2 of his international career.
As for Cockley – did he even play in NSW’s IPL triumph? That is a very, very odd choice.
By the way Michael – Watson is NSW now!
