Victory’s defeat could be good thing, says Brebner

Melbourne Victory midfielder Grant Brebner believes his side will take more from their embarrassing 4-0 A-League defeat by Central Coast than if they had been beaten less convincingly.

It was the Victory’s biggest home ground hammering in their short history.

Melbourne now have two weeks to stew on their defeat, with an A-League fixture break this weekend to allow for the Socceroos‘ Asian Cup qualifier against Oman.

And Brebner said the Victory would be stirred into action by the loss, though he believed the magnitude of the beating would serve as a positive for the rest of their championship defence.

“We’re embarrassed by it, but personally the fact we’ve lost 4-0 will probably be a good thing for us,” Brebner said.

“If you lose 1-0 we could probably sit and say `oh, we were a bit unlucky there’.

“The fact we’ve lost 4-0 and the manner we did, it’s given us a kick up the backside and it’s something we’ll make sure doesn’t happen again.”

The defeat again showed the close nature of the A-League, with just 10 points separating top to bottom in the 10-team league.

Strangely, the second-placed Victory and third-placed Gold Coast have suffered two of the season’s heaviest defeats – Gold Coast losing 6-0 a fortnight ago to Wellington.

But Brebner maintained it was better such a loss be sustained midway through the season than heading towards the finals.

“This is the first time we’ve lost 4-0 at home. It was always going to happen at some point down the track and fortunately it’s happened to us at this point,” Brebner said.

Brebner was given a sneak peek at the Victory’s new home base at Melbourne’s soon-to-be-completed rectangular stadium next to Olympic Park as part of a promotion for Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation on Monday.

The charity promotes organ and tissue donation.

The new 31,000-capacity stadium remains on track for completion early next year, and will host some Victory and Melbourne Heart home A-League matches as well as Melbourne Storm NRL games.
