Haven’t all the armchair accountants come out to play. All of a sudden everyone is espusing intimate knowledge of the Storms balance sheet. The Storm are doing pretty well in a town with no prior RL history. I can’t imagine how they could possibly be in a better realistic position where they are at now to compete with the Rebels.

Well the people of Melbourne are already getting a taste of the hubris of Rugby fans in Australia. Already we have the Rebels turning a profit, making the grand final in the first season and the Storm being put out of existance in 5 years.

Good luck to the Rebels, but they are already being lumped with outrageous expectations by the Australian Rugby public.

Crashy there are some limits. Take it easy on our indigenous players. Referring to Thurston as a slack jawed yokel goes a little against the grain. You obviously choose to ingratiate yourself with foreigners. That is your choice . I will stay with my countryman. I really thought you could have made your point without any derogatory reference to rodgers or thurston.

Nah, Lloyd played only for the Tahs, from 1985 to 1993; he never turned out for the Brumbies. His Australian caps were won in 1998 and 89.

TT, I think you’ll find there were miners playing rugby for many, many years before league came on the scene. At times league supporters need to read a bit of history.

Unfortuanltely it takes a Labor Government to get anything done. Plans were well advanced but there was a change of government in WA. The new Liberal Premier is a wowser. It’s taken some doing but the long promised upgrade of Members Equity Stadium will commence immediately after the 2010 S14 season.

We first wore the hoops against Scotland in ‘98. Scotland was obviously all in Navy so hence the change then which everybody liked.

Someoe mentioned more green in S14. Well the Vics used to have an alternate strip which was predominantly green with red blue and white hooping. Not much to look at be we played in it a few times, particularly in u19/21s

I wouldn’t say the sponsors associated with union are small, but add three large companies on the one jersey then I’d be even more impressed. The Storm have 3 fairly large and significant companies on the 1 jersey

And for the remark on Hostplus, it has a sh!t load of money and is one of the better performing super funds.

You guys must be salvating this morning over Ppeter Fitzsimmon’s SMH article. Brings out the old Weary Dunlop again!

From this morning SMH: The ARU boss also said he would prefer the new franchise not use the name ”the Rebels”, which was used by the Victorian Rugby Union’s team that competed in the now defunct Australian Rugby Championships.

”I’d prefer something other than the Rebels,” O’Neill said. ”I think we need a fresh start, and I think they ought to put it out to the [public and] run a competition.”

Besides a potential sponsorship deal from Rebel Sport, I can’t imagine any other corporate or community benefit in going with the name Rebels.

I give it 5 years and then watch it crash and fall. No FTA coverage, little media covergae, the average vic won’t even know it is on. The storm are very much in the public mind after 4 grand final appearances, alot know who Slater and Inglis and Smith are, I bet most can’t name a single wallaby.

that’s just rubbish, if you look at the proposed squad for the Super 14 it’s full of mainly white South Africans, it was even captained by De Wet Barry.The only thing government has ever said about the Eastern Cape is that the Eastern Cape has a large number of clubs and a infrastructure that demands that there be a successful franchise be established there. Even the report say:
‘The Southern Kings proposal was more advanced with regard to business and financial planning and organization structure and governance. The Southern Kings were also able to point to a strong rugby tradition, a large playing base and presented a stronger case than Melbourne as to their rugby readiness’
So maybe you should get your facts straight before making statements with no basis

i believe SA already has the currie cup for their own provincial competiton, the funniest thing about the southern kings as a proposal was the government was trying to defeat racism by having a black team in the comp, shouldnt they be having integrated teams rather than encouraging seperate race teams.

Crashy, as you say, the Kings were always going to have it over Melbourne in rugby set up. SAF is a rugby paradise. Melbourne is an undiscovered country. And that’s the point. Why take the supposed 6th best spot in an already saturated rugby market, when you can try to get a decent stake in the 2nd biggest city (and arguably biggest sporting city) in Australia?

Norm – Photon has no idea what you are talking about – what more do I say about diet rugby when sports fans truly do not know your code exists.
I do not mean to denigrate mungo but the amount of tosh that leaguies have flung our way this year when we were playing the 1st and 2nd ranked teams in the world – and losing – started to grate. Kind of annoys me when slack-jawed yokels like thurston and rogers are idolised in this country.
