Australia’s cricketers are flying home from India following a soggy conclusion to their victorious limited overs tour of the subcontinent.
The final match of the series at Mumbai was washed out by heavy rains, leaving the final scoreline at 4-2 to the Australians following their decisive win in the sixth match at Guwahati.
Captain Ricky ponting was delighted at the result given the mass of injuries suffered by the team, both in terms of players unavailable to tour and those who were subsequently sent home from the trip, five in all.
“One of the pleasing things with this group, it can be a hard place to tour and different conditions you face and little things you face day to day with living here,” Ponting said.
“But there hasn’t been one negative word from anyone in the team about any of it – we’ve been here really enjoying what we’re doing.
“Winning can make a bit of a difference, but it’s not as though it’s been all plain sailing for us either from the start of the tour – we were 2-1 down early on so there was the opportunity for that sort of stuff (negativity) to creep in, but it just hasn’t been around the group.
“With all the other setbacks we’ve had, we couldn’t afford to sit back and worry about anything else that could’ve distracted us.
“Winning is always good for that, it’s good for the morale and the feeling around the group, and the feeling around the other night in (Guwahati) was terrific and hopefully that continues.”
Allrounder Shane Watson was named man of the series for his outstanding contributions with both bat and ball across the matches, but was unable to accept the trophy and cheque in person because he and fast bowler Mitchell Johnson had already flown home.
India had harboured ambitions of taking the No. 1 ICC rankings spot from Australia by winning the series, but as a result of their loss have now slipped back to third behind South Africa.
