AndyS

That's right. Once upon a time you would find big units in the game - but they are becoming rarer because the game has changed so much.

To use Oikee's favourite expression, they favour giraffes who can run all day.

There are plenty of blokes who will be suited to playing rugby - if they can find their calling early enough and if they have grown up playing both games - all the better.

Yeah, that is how I interpreted it - some sizeable unit around 17 who has the skills but has realised he is never quite going to have the speed or stamina to make it to the top of a predominantly running game. The choice isn't necessarily one of Union over AFL, it is more likely to be the choice between professional Union versus never going further than the VFL.

On the face of it, it sounds farcical, unless it's a youngish player who has recently come out of the elite schools (having played both aussie rules and rugby right through his secondary shool years), and then that becomes a slightly different story.

Did anyone else read the ludicris statement made by Gary Gray, "turn a mobile ruckman into a second rower" Mr Gray we need people that know something about Rugby in Charge in Victoria. Go ask Roger Gould. Paul Hauff, Laurie Daly or Greg Brentnall about their Australian Rules acheivements before they chose the union and league paths. Seriously I think Victorian rugby has looked foolish enough over the last few months without these sort of statements. Mr Gray leave the rugby to the rugby people.
