‘It was so beautiful!’ says singer of Springbok anthem

The reggae singer the Springboks accused of butchering their national anthem before the 20-13 Test match defeat to France says he thought he had “sung beautifully”.
Ras Dumisani, sporting dreadlocks tucked into a huge red, green and white Rastafarian cap, was adamant his performance – which made large parts of the Toulouse crowd burst into laughter – had been a good one.
“No one told me they were upset with the singing,” the Durban native said on Saturday. “In fact, someone just came up to me and told me how beautifully I had sung.”
The South African anthem was sung before France’s stirring “Marseillaise” and the singer, backed by two drummers of his Afrikhaya Band, made a mess of the four-language homage to the Rainbow Nation.
At the anthem’s conclusion, large parts of the crowd were left openly laughing and several Bok players looked over angrily as the singer made his muted departure from the field.
“I must convey that we are annoyed by the fact that the French disrespected our anthem,” blasted South Africa coach Peter de Villiers.
“They didn’t get someone who really knows the thing and show any respect for it. We expect people to show respect to the anthem of any other country.”
But Dumisani was aghast de Villiers and other Bok players were unhappy with his rendition.
“Everyone at the stadium told me I sang well, even after the match. The Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika has been my tune since a baby,” he said. “How can I not know the words?
“There are four languages: Zulu, Sesontho, Afrikaans, English. It’s just four bars, always saying the same thing,” said Dumisani, now based in Paris where he currently records his music and from where he is about to embark on a tour.
“I am the biggest reggae man in South Africa and the Springboks are my team.
“Everyone has their own tastes and you can’t always account for that but most people find my music so beautiful.”
Speaking after the match on Friday, Bok vice-captain Victor Matfield said Dumisani’s rendition of the anthem had taken some of the wind out of the Springbok sails just moments before a kick-off.
“It’s almost like receiving a jersey – every week’s a special moment,” Matfield said of lining up to sing the anthem.
“Every time you go out on the field and sing the national anthem, it’s very important for us and that’s something that fires you up because it really fires you up because you know you’re playing for your country.
“It was a joke out there. The guys couldn’t sing along to it and even the crowd were starting to laugh. It was very disappointing.”
Later Saturday, French team manager Jo Maso said the choice of singer at each game was made by the visiting team’s diplomatic staff.
“Every time we welcome a foreign side, we ask the embassy to propose people for the national anthems,” said Maso.
“It’s the South African embassy that put forward this man and we respected their choice.”

It was a disgrace! The worst I’ve ever seen someone sing – he even beat the clowns at Idol shows. As a Bok i was really punched in the guts watching that.
Whoever chose it I suspect there was obviously a loophole in the choosing of it and the French pounced on it marvellously. Like this other guy mentioned just like the subtle darkening of their jersey’s in the 2007 world cup so that the All Black should play in grey to ‘distract’ them.
But well done winning the game really.
French rugby has definitely took top spot from England now as the team I (and many others) dislike the most

And it seems now that the South Africa embassy and/or diplomatic corp in France chose the singer – ouch.
I recall a game last year when the Irish (?) made the ABs sing their anthem in the dark (equally as despicable)
You can’t have the crowd laughing at your anthem… hopefully some clown got a free ticket from the embassy back to the homeland

No you don’t. Get your facts straight.
This is the most ridiculous story that has been over-hyped by everyone and has managed to distract from the fact that the Boks were soundly beaten by France. Looking for scapegoats in Rastafarian singers who cannot sing in tune is just laughable.
I have heard anthems being butchered many times before. Get over it. It happens.

Oh dear, Pothale. ‘The most ridiculous story that has been over-hyped by everyone’. I barely think 7 comments is an over-reaction by everyone. You’re looking in every cauldron for a skirmish, aren’t you. lol
No doubt the anthem was a terrible rendition and any Bok could feel justifiably blighted. However, I agree, it’s really no excuse for their performance, and perhaps it could be argued it should have spurred them to greater things. It’s a poor excuse for a poor performance and yes, get over it.

Cattledog – wasn’t referring to on here at all. The Roar has been quite sedate about it. It’s in British and Irish media, columns and blogs in South Africa websites, and elsewhere. That’s what I was referring to.

Just for the record, and not that it matters, it was the Welsh and no the Irish that made theAll Blacks do the Haka in their dressing room

I heard Rosanne do a rendition of the US Anthem Stars and Stripes at some major ball game I think it was. If you think Regge Man was appauling, you should have heard this!

If you want to hear bad anthem singing, have a look at Carl Lewis singing before a NBA game in 1993. That is truely horrible.

Pothale
Who, precisely, is trying to use it as an excuse??? I thought it was a disgrace but that doesn’t mean I am trying to use it as an excuse for the boks losing. The boks were beaten by a better side on the night.
