Roy Jones Jr, Danny Green a real let down

I have just paid my fifty bucks and waited hours for what I thought was going to be the greatest boxing match on Australian soil. The eight times World Champ, Roy Jones Jr, versus Australian warrior, the three time world champion, Danny Green.
Unfortunately, what I witnessed appeared to be a pathetic sideshow. The punch that supposedly knocked Roy Jones Jr to the canvas, actually glanced off his shoulder.
Let me just put some perspective on this: I am a fan of both fighters, but seriously guys, this was a joke. There is, I suppose, the possibility that Roy Jones Jr did not train at all for this fight.
But watch it for yourself and tell me I’m wrong.
I’m very disappointed.

Jacks Dad – I dropped $150 on grog at the pub so your $50 was a better investment than mine!
It was a shot to the temple that took Jones Jnr down. He was wobbly when he got up and never recovered under the Green onslaught. Great (albeit short) performance by Green, sets him up for some big pay day(s) in the US! I hope Roy hangs up the gloves now, it’s sad to see a legend reduced to being stopped in the first round.

Sad to see him take a dive

I agree with Bill it was a shot to the temple that staggered Roy Jone jr, and the onslaught by Green that caused the ref to call off the fight. It wasn’t the head shot that won Green the fight but the onslaught after it, an excellent decision by Danny to just get on him and hit him

I too, was at this fight – although it definitely would have been better if it went a few more rounds at least, I still had a great time.
The atmosphere was amazing – but perhaps the best fight of the night was ‘wild’ will tomlinson.. what a little demon!!

Reminded me of Tyson vs Michael Spinks.
Spinks was getting US$3m no matter what and there was no way he would have wanted his daughter (who was at ringside) see him getting clobbered.
I dont know what Jones’ excuse is.

My god, you obviously don’t watch boxing too often.
Good on ya Danny, I was watching the news late last night when it came on and the tingles going up my spin were amazing, that 30 sec footage had me screaming at the TV.

I totally agree with JacksDad on this……. that fight was orchestrated………
The fight had alot to live up too and there was a very nice wager in it for both men.
What a shame we didn’t witness something like a Hatton/Tsyzu fight. If you watch those shots closely, not many of them land….. the whole thing was a farce and I’m glad I didn’t pay money for it!
Its yet to be confirmed but I was told that a Green win in the first round was paying 100/1. The whole perforance up too and including the ringside match was like a US wrestling event. What a joke and I’ve always been a fan of Danny’s.

Does this mean we should take Mundine more seriously or has Green stepped up a notch?

Great hit and result if it was fairdinkum, it all seemed a bit suspect to me – did Roy Jones come to fight or just pick up some cash to pay the bills. Mundine vs Green part II should be on the cards now.

Green was fighting a 40 year old man past his prime.
For those thinking Jones didn’t train and took a dive – he has enough money to have retired before this and you don’t make the weight looking like he did without a lot of training and a strict diet.

Dean I’m a bit sus about Jones’s comitment to the fight.
Danny has said he noticed when they were first in the ring that Jones wasn’t sweeting (ie: hadn’t warmed up before the start) and to then watch Jones standing there with his left guard down by his side – inviting Danny to hit him!
Low and behold Danny belts him in that side of his head and it’s all over!
I’m not calling a fixed fightby any means – but I am question RJ’s comitment!

You mustn’t know much about RJJ if you were surprised by his left hand being down “inviting” green in… In his prime Jones Jr was famous for doing this as a taunt to other fighters as he would then skilfully evaded all their attempts to take advantage of the wide opening he was giving them and the clock them with vicious combos as soon as they missed. The problem for Jones is that as he’s gotten older his reflexes and speed aren’t at a level where he can get away with that kind of arrogance anymore.
