Sydney’s Olympic stadium gets ODI status
ANZ Stadium is a step closer to hosting international cricket matches after being given the green light to put on one-day internationals by cricket’s governing body.
The International Cricket Council’s chief executives committee this week granted the 2000 Olympics venue the go ahead before the SCG’s hosting rights expire at the end of this summer.
With England coming to Australia to defend the Ashes for the 2010/11 season, the move sets up a battle between the two Sydney venues to host the lucrative fixtures against the old enemy.
The redeveloped SCG is expected to maintain its traditional grip on Tests despite its capacity of 46,000 being dwarfed by the Olympic Stadium’s 81,500.
But the older venue might miss out on hosting a limited-overs fixture despite concerns over the nature of drop-in pitches used at ANZ Stadium.
