The Newcastle Jets have kept Adelaide United anchored to the bottom of the A-League ladder with a 2-0 victory at Hindmarsh Stadium.

Captain Matt Thompson netted from close range in the 46th minute before South Korean Jin-Hyung Song converted an 80th minute penalty.

Their goals ensured the Jets recorded their first set of consecutive A-League wins in almost two years before Adelaide’s lowest crowd this season of just 8,502 fans.

Newcastle’s second away win in a week drew them level on points with sixth-placed Wellington Phoenix despite losing star striker Michael Bridges through injury after 10 minutes.

Adelaide pressed hard for a breakthrough after making four line-up changes, including the return of central midfielder Paul Reid.

But Thompson’s fourth goal of the season, seconds before halftime, proved another blow to Adelaide’s finals hopes as they slumped to a third loss in four games.

Adelaide were unlucky not to score in the 15th minute when striker Christiano had his shot cleared off the line by Tarek Elrich.

But the Jets found the vital breakthrough when striker Sean Rooney found Elrich at the far post to set up Thompson from close range.

Christiano tested Jets `keeper Neil Young in the 49th minute but Newcastle were able to hold firm and keep Adelaide scoreless for the sixth time this season.

Referee Kevin Docherty gave Song the chance to seal it late when he awarded a penalty for handball against Adelaide fullback Scott Jamieson.

Jets coach Branko Culina said Newcastle were the better team on the night.

“(The win) it’s very pleasing,” he said.

“I think the Sydney win was important because we’d come off a bad loss against Wellington.

“And the win tonight was just as important to back that up.

“Sydney and Adelaide are the two teams our club hadn’t beaten away in a long, long time.”

The only negative for the Jets was a hamstring injury to Bridges which is more serious than a similar injury he sustained three weeks ago.

Adelaide United assistant coach Phil Stubbins said his club was in a bit of a hole and had to dig itself out.

“We came out brightly again in the first half and then we succumbed to a sucker punch on the stroke of halftime,” he said.

“And to be honest we never recovered from it.”
