"The England team is now harder to get out of than it is to get into. The English selectors have, amazingly enough, actually learnt something from the truncated careers of the likes of Hick and Ramprakash."

Yes, correct.and that has been a problem at times. It's about finding a balance, which England seemed to get in the summer and hopefully they can continue that.

Freud, you're writing like it's 1999. Everything you say was true of England in the 80s and 90s, but it is no longer true. The England team is now harder to get out of than it is to get into. The English selectors have, amazingly enough, actually learnt something from the truncated careers of the likes of Hick and Ramprakash, and now give fellows (well, batsmen anyway) a fair crack of the whip. Hence Cook and Collingwood and even Ian Bell have each received about nine lives when their predcessors would have been lucky to receive three (and those three would have been spaced at two-yearly intervals!)

The real panic merchants nowadays are the Australian selectors.
