Rafa and Moyes: Merseyside managers in strife

Before a single kick off this season they were massive expectations from the two rival Merseyside clubs, Liverpool and Everton.
Everton, lead by David Moyes, would have had a large expectancy to do well this season after their past four of five seasons having been very promising. While Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool would have higher expectations after just missing out on the league title last season to Manchester United by just 4 points.
Will these men still be employed by there respective clubs come season’s end?
Rafa Benitez is really feeling the heat after his club has already dropped five games this term after just 15 starts, compared to last season going through the whole campaign with just losing two.
Adding to their woes are the financial limitations put on the club recently. Rafa has splashed the cash since his arrival at Anfield for no great return with the obvious exception of Liverpool’s dramatic Champions League win in 2005.
With all the new acquisitions since Rafa’s arrival there has been a failure to get a quality understudy for Fernando Torres. Since Torres’ injury this season Liverpool have struggled to find a focal point up front.
David N’Gog has shown glimpses but desperately needs support. A lack of goals is just one of several problems.
Since Xabi Alonso’s departure to Real Madrid, Rafa’s side have looked unstable in the middle, with Alonso’s replacement Italian Alberto Aquilani yet to make a start due to injury.
However Yossi Benayoun has been much improved and impressive for the Reds. But the Brazilian Lucas and Argentine Mascherano have failed to support captain Steven Gerrard in creating in the final third.
And then there is the defence.
While on paper they look quite strong, they haven’t functioned well as a defensive unit. Difficult to point fingers because they are all culprits one way or another.
All in all if Liverpool’s season doesn’t turn around quick, Benitez I have no doubt will be replaced. There are rumours that Kenny Dalglish could be the next in line to take over.
With Liverpool not winning a league title since the Premier League started in 1992, the pressure is mounting on the Spanish manager from not only the board but the Liverpool faithful as well.
Over the last 5 seasons Everton have secured returns of 4th, 11th, 6th, 5th and once again 5th.
Good numbers considering the competition. However after 14 starts this season Moyes’ men sit at a dismal 16th. Hence the pressure now on Everton’s manager to get some results on the board.
Since Moyes arrived at Goodison park he has also spent reasonable amounts of cash to put together a strong outfit. But so far this season they haven’t looked as attractive as some of their lucrative paychecks.
Players like Jo, Yakubu, James Vaughan, Tim Cahill, Mikel Arteta, Phil Jagielka and Steven Pienaar have either been missing with injury or ability.
The surprise star for the toffees has been the criticised winger Diniyar Bilyaletdinov. When signed by Everton it was regarded as a bad move, well he has certainly silenced those critics.
Like his Merseyside counterpart Rafa Benitez, David Moyes could also be looking for a new role come season’s end. With the rejection of a new stadium recently, things have gone from bad to worse for the toffees.
My prediction is by May or June next year, Rafa Benitez will be gone from Liverpool’s helm, and David Moyes may hang on to his job for at least one more season. Best of luck to the two Merseyside managers. They are going need it.

Unless Moyes Walks out on the club I promise you he will still have a job at Everton come season end same applies for Benitez for different reasons though. Moyes has done so much for the club over the past few years and while for some clubs that can mean squat, Everton have been shown to be patient with Moyes (need i remind you of the 2003/04 season when they finished 17th yet Everton persisted with moyes and the following season they finished fourth?) as they have full confidence in his ability to manage the team on far more limited resources than teams both above and below his. I have full confidence at the very least he’ll guide Everton to a respectable mid table position come season end.
As for Benitez my opinion critically and as a Liverpool supporter is that he’s taken the club as far as he can and I think we need someone new to lead the club forward, someone who is less hit and miss in the transfer market (for every Torres and Benayoun there is a Keane, Voronin and Lucas) However having said that he wont be fired anytime soon. You touched upon the fact Liverpool are in financial strife at the moment and that is exactly the point he wont be fired, Liverpool simply cannot afford to pay out his contract at this current time which as a fan in particular very worrying for the stability of the club. Having said all that and despite my reservations about Benitez he is still a good manager and once we get a fully fit squad (ie Aquilani-Saw him play a few times for Both Roma and Italy he is fantastic when fit) that we’ll get that coveted fourth position…fingers crossed

Absolutely agree with you on the Everton point with Moyes, however the standard of Everton’s football has increased since 03-04 which could work against him. But you are right he has been fantastic.
Once again i agree with you that Rafa is a great head coach its just not clicking for him, and i believe everyone now is getting very impatient. Having said that injuries have been an issue this season. I still believe he wont be there at the end of the season. And a possible move back to Spain with Real Madrid could be on the cards. Liverpool must start getting there transfers right!!

Regarding Benitez in the transfer market. I’ve been told that the Keane acquisition wasn’t anything to do with Rafa, he never wanted him there in the first place but the powers that be decided once he was available they wanted him and got him, Rafa barely gave him a chance as he didn’t see him fitting into his system.
That being said, he would have to be the worst manager at a big club in the world when it comes to spending. That he got Torres, well Torres was already brilliant, he hasn’t really uncovered any diamonds except for maybe Benayoun has come on at Anfield but all of his other successful purchases were already established and he still managed to fork out a fortune for them (ie the ridiculous fee for Johnson in the summer).
Then of course there is Voronin…

Nice little article about the Merseyside Duo. I firmly beleive once everton get their long term injured back they will be ok, sadly its probably not going to be this year that they are going to push for a top 6/7. I feel sorry for Moyes, you can tell he can’t beleive hes got so many injuries. Hibbert and Neil were in the centre of defence vs spurs. unbeleivable. I suspect they’ll go out and get 2/3 emergency signings…possibly loans to get them through the rest of the season.
They might even be able to jag a good Europa cup campaign in the new year. The draw vs spurs actually feels like a win…maybe its the little bit of luck they need to turn the season around.
The red half, well i dont follow them closely enough to offer an opinion other than rafa seriously sold his team short without adequate quality depth for there champions / premier league campaigns. If our situation wasn’t so dier i’d be laughing.
Maybe the only thing saving both these 2 is that the league is so tight and 2 wins strung back to back can project either away from danger. Makes for an interesting xmas / new year run.
Good to see TC get on the score sheet again.
