NRL and the AFL don't own the stadiums in question, and May 2010 is when the stadium owners and the FFA, after consulting the NRL and AFL will decide the shortlist of stadiums, and a potential draw. Already proposals have been made to AFL & NRL as to how their seasons can be managed in parallel with the WC in 2018 (as an example).

Calm down, the WC won't kick off until 2018 or 2022.

the May deadline is for the 'bid book',

which is crazy that people talk about Demetriou blocking the bid here before xmas.......crazy talk, just the Fairfax soccer media yearning for attention and trying to create a scapegoat for a flawed bid.

Jimbo -

AFL have offered the MCG.

You can't blame the AFL if no one wants to extend the new Swan St (BUbbledome) stadium.

That is not the AFL's issue.

The construction of that stadium was trumpeted as a future WC venue if required.

SO, don't blame the AFL that they intend to see this carried through......even if the FFA seem to prefer a street fight instead.

What is this May deadline all about?

In fact - it is not a deadline at all - at least for the AFL/NRL. When did they ever agree to potentially sell their millions of fans down the river in 8 or 12 years time and do this by May 2010?

Don't remember either of them signing on the dotted line to work to this deadline.

jimbo, how can the AFL be to blame? This article states clearly that the NRL have serious issues with certain financial aspects of the bid regarding the survival of some of their clubs.
The blame will lay squarely at feet of the incompetent FFA soccer fools who are trying to muscle their way into the Australian winter sporting landscape in order to make themselves feel important among the soccer world.
I live in Queensland and follow the Lions, Broncos, Wallabies AND the Socceroos.
This argument is ridiculous and shows how shallow, narrowminded, unworldly, uneducated and culturally embarrassed, some Australians are.
The two biggest football codes in Australia are; and in my opinion always will be, Aussie Rules and Rugby League.
Soccer may get its moment in the sun here one day, but it should at least have some respect for the millions of Australians who don't follow it as their favourite code, regardless of how many third world countries play it, otherwise they could lose people who are fans from a distance.
It is up to the FFA to negotiate a suitable outcome.
People like you should stop blaming everyone else for their incompetence.

If Australia don't win the bid we all know who we are going to blame now.

Fark the arrogant, pigheaded AFL and fark their chances of expanding AFL further into Sydney or the Gold Coast.
