West Indies coach David Williams is looking forward to his quicks putting the heat on Australia’s batsmen in the third Test in Perth as he sweats on the fitness of Sulieman Benn.

The West Indies played well in the Adelaide draw in a game where they were the only team with a chance to win on the final day, and now prepare for Wednesday’s third Test hopeful of levelling the series.

Williams toured Australia during his 11-Test career and remembers Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh looking forward to the WACA deck, but now he’s excited to see how Kemar Roach goes.

The 21-year-old speedster looked sharp in the WACA nets on Friday and Williams is excited by the prospect of his quick bowlers testing Australia’s batsmen on a bouncy pitch.

“He normally bowls around 148-150km/hr and here in the nets he didn’t ease up at all, he let himself go,” Williams said.

“That’s Roach and how he goes all the time. He always wants to keep his fitness and speed up, and he’s really looking forward to this Perth wicket,” Williams said.

“When we come to Australia normally we put a tick by the Perth track, but in those days we had Ambrose and Walsh who were tall. We’ve got a few shorts guys now, but still if there’s pace, bounce and sideways movement we have the bowlers to exploit it.”

The only injury concern surrounds Benn who has a knee problem after bowling 53 overs in the first innings in Adelaide for 5-155, and then 27 in the second for 0-51.

He certainly bowled well, though, and Williams is confident he will be right to play.

“He’s having some treatment with the physio and didn’t bowl today, but hopefully he will start tomorrow,” Williams said.

“He is all right. It’s just his knee that is giving him some problems and maybe that was from the long spell in Adelaide, but he is getting there slowly but surely.”

Confidence is high in the West Indies camp after controlling much of the second Test in Adelaide and Williams put it down to a strong meeting where the experienced players decided it was time to step up after the Brisbane debacle.

“The first game was a thrashing and we had a very strong meeting where the senior guys realised that they didn’t come to the party,” he said.

“They did in the second and we hope it happens again in the third. We are looking for an even better one than Adelaide.”

“Many people didn’t expect us to do well, but not that badly. It was a very strong meeting and the guys realised that we are here and might as well give it 100 per cent.”
