The IOC has announced that along with men’s and women’s singles and doubles at the 2012 Olympics, mix doubles will now be included.
The idea is to get the big guns, who usually shun doubles of any kind, to play in this extra event and thus increase viewers, although they didn’t say that in so many words.
All matches will, of course, be played on grass at Wimbeldon.
This would certainly give Australia a shot at a medal with, say, Hewitt and Stosur. The Russians and Americans will be particularly strong.
Here’s a quiz on mixed doubles at Wimbledon: from 1936 to 2009, one woman won the mixed a record five times in a row. Who was she?
The first two times she was partnered by the same Aussie, and the three times after that she was partnered by the same American. Who were those two male players?
Answers will appear tomorrow.
