2009 has been a year dominated by NRL disasters off the field, Tiger’s rise and fall, the feuds and crumbling of the rugby union empire, the somewhat bland yet successful Socceroos qualifying for the World Cup and the Baggy green’s disaster in England.
So what will 2010 bring about for sport?
1. Tiger Woods returns after his sex scandal to the US Masters and shows he’s lost none of his touch to win it by at least three strokes
2. The Socceroos make it to the Quarter Finals of the World Cup as Australia wins the 2022 World Cup hosting rights.
3. Geelong defends their AFL Premiership beginning debate on whether they are the best side ever. In the NRL, Parramatta finally ends their curse and claims the title. Biggest improvers in the AFL include the Adelaide Crows, Hawthorn and Sydney. South Sydney and Wests Tigers will also return to their league glory days.
4. Australia at the Winter Olympics claim a few gold medals as new sources of funding our Olympians are investigated on top of government funding. Meanwhile, for the first time since 1986, England will finish on top of the Commonwealth Games medal table as construction in Delhi goes within days of the Opening Ceremony.
5. As the Collingwood Football Club falters in 2010 on the field, pressure turns on Mick Malthouse to resign for Nathan Buckley.
6. While not winning the Tri-Nations, the Wallabies play an attacking brand of rugby that sees them peak for the 2011 World Cup.
7. The Federal Government’s relaxation of the laws governing sport on television sees four games of AFL and five of NRL sold to pay TV, while events like the British Open, US Tennis Open, Tour De France and World Athletics and Swimming Championships disappear from Free-To-Air TV.
8.Australia regains the Ashes from England as Twenty20 cricket becomes more prolific.
9. Roger Federer continues to dominate tennis, as Andy Murray continues to be the great disappointment and Australian tennis continues its southward trend.
10. The 150th Melbourne Cup Carnival is dominated by the greatest trainer in Australian history.
To everyone at the Roar and its readers have a safe Christmas and a happy 2010.
