Victory, FC grudge match comes with extra grudge

It’s Melbourne versus Sydney, with extra grudge. Saturday night’s clash of the two A-League powerhouses at Etihad Stadium will go a long way towards determining the minor premiership, as the Victory (34 points) lead the second-placed Sydney FC (31) by three points.
If that’s not enough incentive for the keen rivals, add the chase for redemption and a major milestone and it’s little wonder this clash looms as the biggest of the season, and a possible grand final preview.
Victory skipper Kevin Muscat, who will become only the second player after Alex Tobin to play 500 Australian league games, said Melbourne were relishing the chance to stake a major hold on the minor premiership in their bid to become the first side to win back-to-back A-League titles.
“It’s first against second and we’ve probably been the fiercest rivals since day one, they’ve got themselves in a decent position this year,” Muscat said.
“Our motivation and goal at the start of the season was to be the first team to have a crack at going back-to-back.
“We find ourselves in a position where we’re able to give that a tilt now.
“This weekend comes at a perfect time for us, because we can go six points clear and give the rest of the league a massive indication that we’re serious about winning the flag.”
The Victory are also out to avenge the 3-0 drubbing they suffered at the hands of Sydney in October, also at Etihad Stadium.
Sydney skipper Steve Corica said that round-10 win gave his side plenty of confidence on its return trip, and that the atmosphere inside the stadium would only add to the game.
“We know when we’re going down to Melbourne there’s going to be a massive crowd, 30-odd thousand or whatever,” he said.
“It’s the biggest crowd we play in front of this season in the A-League and all the boys look forward to it.
“It’s a massive game and obviously a very important one.
“We need to pick up some points in Melbourne otherwise they’ll go six points in front of us.
“Massive game on our behalf and obviously away from home as well makes it that little bit more difficult.
“We got a result last time we were down there, I’m sure they remember that and hopefully we can put on the same kind of performance and get the three points.”
The Victory enter the game unbeaten in their past four games, while Sydney have bounced back with back-to-back wins after three defeats in rounds 13-15.

Will be there spreading the Christmas joy to all our friends from the Harbour City.
Hopefully Melbourne Victory wont be so generous on the field. Its the ‘Big Blue’, ‘Big City Derby’, or ‘Oz Classico’ depending upon which publication you’re reading. It is certainly in the process of developing into one of the biggest rivalries in Oz sport. The atmosphere at the Dome is usually terrific…only a pity this time the rectangular configuration couldn’t be left out. When is was out vs Gold Coast a few weeks back the atmosphere in the ground was as good as a final and there were only 20,000 inside.
It is also an opportunity for the fringe Socceroos to impress Pim in the big game atmosphere…over to you Archie. The loss of Colosimo is a major blow for SFC but MV have major injury concerns the biggest of which are ‘The Jackal’ and Ward. Looks like they will start but no doubt will be subject to rough treatment from the go.
Victory cant let Sydenee get off to a flyer as they have done in their last 2 games at the dome. Therefore a cagey opening but the Victory to come through 2-1 with a Ward piledriver the winner.

Chelsea, SFC, and GCU, will be the winners after the weekend… OK what does that mean; hmm Chelsea 3pts ahead of Man U, and closing in on the double; Carlo’s Jackals cruising at the top of the EPL… Lavickta’s SFC Cossacks putting the sabre through the Melb V’s pretenders to go top of the HAL on goal difference (?) with Miron’s Israeli commandos running into clear third spot one point behind the Scottish One’s band of merry men of Portuguese interpreters…
It will all start for me on Saturday night keeping a close eye on tonight’s proceedings the El Classico at the Dome… Then on Sunday morning checking the EPL football results, then in the evening I shall be venturing out to Fortress Miron’s Kibbutz with chuffer driving son to watch the lads demolish the Gloryless team by Miron’s Israeli green beret commandos with my usual 2 hot dogs sauce, mustard and a beer in hand …
Football on the Gold Coast; does it get better than that…? Well as an ex Sydney born and bred lad and once 1972 ex Chelsea resident it’s definitely on par…

Good game and Ryall did well even though Thompson had a few chances to score.
Brosque had a couple of good chances too.
Will be interesting to see who Pimbo picks in the forward line for the two Remaining Asiain CUp qualifiers without the EuroRoos.
The final round game on Feb 12 against the MVFC might have to be the Premiership decider at the Sydney Football Stadium.

Good game and a better performanve from MVFC.
Sebastian Ryall played well filling in for Colossimo, although Thompson had a few chances.
Brosque also had a couple of chances to score.
Will be interesting to see who Pimbo selects in the forward line for the remaining Asian Cup Qualifiers.
Looks like the final round game on Feb 12 at SFS might decide the HAL premiers – SFC or MVFC.
