With Fox Sports showing live A-League, Socceroos and live English Premier League matches, what is left for SBS?
The European Champions League is also on ESPN; ONE HD gives us German Bundesliga and EUROSPORT gives us the Greek SuperLeague. The time has come for SBS to make a stand.
Many people seem to be of the opinion that for the A-League too grow and prosper it must be on free to air television, but with a new contract more than likely to be signed between the FFA and Fox Sports to show the Socceroos matches and A-League matches, SBS is left in the lurch.
SBS is rumoured to be planning to show one match, live weekly, from the NSW Premier League competition and one from the Victorian Premier League competition, and also a one hour highlights and preview package of the competitions weekly.
This scheduling is speculated to be announced in early 2010, which will bring light to the unofficial second divisions of Australian football and give A-League fans the chance to see where the new, rough diamonds will be coming from in the future.
These competitions are set for bumper seasons with large crowds expected for teams like South Melbourne, Sutherland Sharks, South Coast Wolves, Sydney Olympic, Sydney United, Bonnyrigg and Rockdale City.
Things are looking good for football in this country. Well done to SBS and the state league clubs for fighting a hard battle to bring the heart of the sport to the media’s attention once again.
No doubt if this SBS deal goes through it will be a winner in the television ratings.

SBS has the European Champions League and the 2nd Tier Comp. They show 4 ECL games a week when it’s on.
All for them showing NSWPL games though, supporters of those clubs are a huge part of their target demographic and strengthening the middle of the pyramid can only be good for football.

It’s curious that soccer fans often complain about rough treatment from the media, yet the publicly funded broadcaster, SBS (Soccer Before Sex), has been dedicating about 15% of its budget and time to soccer for nearly 30 years.
ps and the real outrage is that they’re showing less sex, and more soccer!!

You may have noticed that SBS has a legislated charter (thats right – legislated) to broadcast with a particular international focus – football is the world game after all. It also explains their focus on cycling and cricket – each strong sports on a regional and quasi-global basis.

It would be nice to see a wrap up of all the state leagues, not just NSW premier league and Victorian Premier League. There are plenty of good players in other state leagues like Queensland, Northern NSW, South Australia, Western Australia etc.

What do people in Aussie think about the Sydney Olympics 10 years down the line ? ? ?
I am not too happy that the next Games will be happening over here in 2012. It’s going to leave us with an insane debt, isn’t it ?!?!?!?

Olympics have been fantastic for Sydney – 80 hectares of sporting and recreational facilities that have served a generation, a whole new suburb of housing created in Sydney from the Athletes Village, a big boost in Tourism and government revenues, NSW is by far the biggest holiday destination for overseas travellers and is still the biggest state economy and growing . . . the trains and buses ran on time.
A fantasctic event for Sydney and the country.

Jimbo, wake up. The cost was billions of dollars NOT spent on important infrastructure, and nmerous white elephants including Homebush Bay that are only now beginning to be fixed.
Previous studies apparently found it took Montreal 12 years to recover from the Olympics it hosted, in getting spending back on track, and making up for the spending on the Games and the holes it left elsewhere.
From where I stand, Sydney has a similar hangover.
I loved the Olympics, and it was great to host, but I am sick of the starry eyed, rose tinted view of the Games as having no drawbacks.

I am awake Pablo and disagree wholeheartedly.
I have worked all around the world and lived in Sydney all my life.
Sydney is a great city and the only one I was going to bring up my family in and the Olympics was the best thing that ever happened to this city.
Call me starry eyed and rose tinted if you like and I do have a positive outlook on life, but I might suggest you are looking at Sydney through the bottom of a half empty beer glass.

I figured that but I have no beef with Sydney olympic promoting themselves…..It’s the fact that Olympic fans quickly turn to denegrating other football supporters and the A league that irks me.

SBS have the rights to the FA Cup and all World Cup games as well, which are currently the only football matches on FTA.
In 2012 all Socceroos games go on the Anti-Siphoning list and SBS will be in there bidding as well.

Savvy what’s your problem buddy? Got something against the premier league teams? Think bout where the A-League gets all it’s players from before you speak

Well i don;t have anything against state league teams. I was just highlighting the way ethnic team supporters like to acuse the A-league of not having passion.
