Stelios to play for Sydney Olympic FC?
The latest hot rumour coming out of Belmore Sports Ground is that Stelios Giannakopoulos, the former Bolton Wanderers and Olympiakos legend, is on the verge of singing a seven game guest stint for Sydney Olympic FC.
With Sydney Olympic looking to bring the buzz back to the club, this move would be ideal to bring their old supporters through the gate once again to recapture the wonderful passion that flowed through the club for the last 52 years.
Stelios, now 34 and being re-leased from Larissa FC in the Greek Superleague, is rumoured to be excited to be playing for one of the biggest club’s in Australian football.
Sydney Olympic’s first game of the season is on the 28th February at Belmore Sports Ground with a 6pm kick off.
The club is expecting a crowd of around the 5,000 mark, and with the signing of Stelios, maybe a 10,000 crowd could be on the cards.

Surely an A-League club should be looking to sign someone of his calibre.

Hellas won the 2004 European Championships. This took place before the birth of the A League. Therefore the A League does not recognise the Hellas win as the FFA / A League do not acknowledge football history prior to 2005.

The formation of a taskforce to establish a new league commenced in October 2003 and the A-League was born four months later (that would be early 2004). Euro 2004 was held in June/July of that year, ie: after the formation of the A-League’s framework. What exact relevance this has to Giannakopoulos as a potential A-League target is still a mystery.
There is no going back to ethnic based clubs at the highest level of Australian football, despite the protestations of the few harping back to the bad old days and of the zealots at SBS.
