Third-tier Leeds United produced the shock of the third round by knocking 11-time winners Manchester United out of the FA Cup with a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Fallen giants Leeds, the League One leaders who are 43 places below English champions Manchester United, won thanks to Jermaine Beckford’s 19th minute goal and then denied their hosts, second in the Premier League, an equaliser.
It was the first time Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had lost in the third round of the FA Cup, the stage at which teams from England’s top two divisions enter the knockout tournament, since he arrived at Old Trafford 24 years ago.
Not since 1984, when beaten by third tier Bournemouth, had Manchester United lost at this stage of the competition.
Victory was also Leeds’s first at Old Trafford since 1981.
Their goal came after Jonny Howson’s superb 50-yard pass over the head of Wes Brown found striker Beckford and he outpaced the defender before sliding the ball left-footed into the far corner and beyond goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak.
United did threaten and, after Leeds keeper Casper Ankergren had advanced quickly to block Wayne Rooney’s initial shot, Jason Crowe had to clear off the line from the England striker.
Ankergren then produced another good block to deny Danny Welbeck early in the second-half.
Just short of the hour mark, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson made a double substitution with veteran forward Ryan Giggs replacing Gabriel Obertan and striker Antonio Valencia coming on for Danny Welbeck.
But still Leeds denied the home side and, with 20 minutes left, Ferguson sent on Michael Owen, his final substitution, only to see the England striker scuff a shot from inside the box moments later.
Rooney then fired way over the crossbar and, with 12 minutes left, Beckford could have made it 2-0 only for his shot to whistle past the far post.
Leeds substitute Robert Snodgrass then hit the crossbar and, in the five minutes of stoppage time, Ankergren saved from Rooney.

The beauty and the unpredictible nature of the FA Cup has done it again. What other sports comp around the world could produce a result like that? Nowhere elese but the FA Cup in England.

How good was Kisnorbo? He had Berbatov in his pocket! It should give him massive confidence because if he can handle Berbatov and Rooney, he can handle anybody. Kilkenny was terrific as well.

Brilliant seeing the mancs get dumped out of the cup by Leeds outta all teams!
Kisnorbo has that bandage permanently affixed to his head! He was solid as a rock today, well done to the young man. Was this Beckford’s last game in a Leeds Utd shirt? Is way too good a player to be stuck in League One, as is Snodgrass.

I think if I was a player I would prefer to be at Leeds than any of the bottom 3rd Championship teams.

Newcastle United are interested in snapping up Beckford. If Premiership football is his ultimate goal then I can’t see him not moving to Newcastle Utd who lets face it have by far the best team in the Championship and will be back in the Premiership next year (unless some kind of Keeganesque late season collapse happens once again). I would think most footballers would prefer to play for an up and coming Leeds Utd knowing their history and with home attendances of 35,000+ most weeks than for many Championship clubs like Plymouth or Peterborough who struggle to fill their grounds with more than 10,000 to 15,000.

My thinking too Al.
Would be very hard to turn down Newcastle if that’s true.

Should be pointed out that Scott McDonald scored for Celtic last night in the Auld Firm match, Tim Cahill scored the go ahead goal for Everton in their cup tie and Josh Kennedy played in and set up a goal in the final of the Japanese version of the FA Cup, Emperors Cup. Some good work from around the globe by the Aussies.

Kisnorbo is the definately one of the best defenders not in the Premiership. Kilkenny, especially in the first half showed what amazing vision he has with some great passes. Leeds were always going to be up for the match against their biggest, most hated rivals, and Man U still fielded a pretty decent team (Vidic pulled out with injury in the warms ups). Beckford gave Brown fits all night.
Marching on Together.

Kisnorbo is [the] defin[a]itely one of the best defenders not in the Premiership… or, more to the point, kisnorbo is definitely one of the best defenders not in the state league…

Visualising Brown in an England shirt is nightmare enducing.

Sorry garyworth, very bad grammar and spelling on my behalf.

It is good to see Kilkenny gaining some profile as he has been one of the ‘lost Australians’ yet it is players of his ilk that we will be needing for the Asian Cup and beyond.

So very funny.
Made better by Sir Alex whinging about not enough extra time.
Tifosi said | January 4th 2010 @ 3:16pm | Report comment
Whenever Sir Alex loses its always because they dont play enough injury time !!
The guy is starting to sound as bad as rafa benitez.
Anyway great result for leeds who have beaten their most hated rival.
Kisnorbo would have done his wc chances a world of good.
