The word from Kuwait City is that Pim Verbeek will take an attacking 4-2-3-1 into Thursday morning’s (our time) Asian Cup qualifier against Kuwait, which may see Alex Brosque nestled in behind Archie Thompson in something resembling a two-man forward line, which would be a Socceroos collector’s item.
According to the trusty Fox Sports observers, Andy Harper and Simon Hill, who have been on the ground keeping an eye on things at training, the formation will look something like this;
————————Galekovic———————
———————————————————–
Kemp———Moore——Colosimo——-Heffernan
————————————————————-
——————Wilkshire—–Jedinak—————-
————————————————————
—Sterjovski————Brosque———–Vidosic—-
————————————————————–
————————-A Thompson———————–
If true, it’s a well balanced outfit, offering plenty of cut and thrust going forward and a very solid central defensive spine, with two key men in Luke Wilkshire and Mile Jedinak screening Craig Moore and Simon Colosimo.
Eugene Galekovic is the right option between the sticks.
The experienced central defenders need no introduction to each other, having been a part of the Socceroos team that set a world record in 2001 when they thumped American Samoa 31-0 in Coffs Harbour.
Of course, Archie Thompson was the major story that night, bagging 13 of his own, but as I noted in this recent piece, February 2006 was the A-League greats last goal in green and gold; four long years.
Thompson has looked a very hungry player since missing out on a couple of Verbeek’s recent squads, and knows more than anyone that he must seize this chance if he is to figure going forward.
Thompson would do well to not only focus his attention on making Verbeek’s World Cup 23, but on giving the manager something to think about in the front third stakes. No done deals in that area, it would appear.
Club coach Ernie Merrick has been boasting about the strikers renewed ability to defend from the front, and if Verbeek is seeing the same thing at training, then Thompson will have made an impression.
Verbeek loves nothing more than a front four that can start the teams defence, and that is among the reasons Brosque looks a sound option in behind Thompson.
Had Nick Carle been playing more regularly at Crystal Palace then he might have had a mortgage on the “number 10”, but as it is Neil Warnock thinks more highly of a hack like Shaun Derry, and Carle hasn’t been off the bench since the 5th of December.
Meanwhile, the Sydney FC striker, if he is given a license to roam from this central attacking midfield spot, can be a real headache for Kuwait, getting forward and beyond Thompson in the dynamic, driving style that Verbeek tends to adore.
With his finishing ability, he even has the opportunity to prove he is a better option that Brett Holman.
Brosque has made no secret of his desire to play centrally, and, like Thompson, must play with the confidence he has been exuding in the domestic league.
Foremost, these two must do their job for the team. Thereafter, the other pieces will fall into place.
Dario Vidosic was seen limping a couple of days ago, but may have done enough with his limited opportunities so far to get a start. The modern wide player, he knows his job is to offer something in attack and funnel back quickly when without the ball.
It is a role he is familiar with at Nurnberg, despite not having featured since late November.
On the other side, Mile Sterjovski knows the scene, knows what is expected of him, and has been hitting his straps at Perth.
It looks a mobile and quick front four, and the hope is they can combine well and stretch the Kuwaitis.
All the while they will be fed by the boss of the midfield, Wilkshire, who will look to set the tempo with his simple and efficient game.
If Jason Culina had made the trip, Wilkshire might have best been utilised on the right side of defence, but with Culina pulling out, the Dynamo Moscow man had to play in central midfield.
Mile Jedinak has been getting forward and getting goals in Turkey, but among his key roles here will be to ensure the supply to the dangerous Bader Al Mutwa, one of this correspondent’s favourite Asian players, is minimised.
Otherwise, the tormenter of the Socceroos on more than one occasion might get a chance to get at Moore on the ground, and that could spell trouble.
Our best bet is if Colosimo, with his extra pace, looks after Al Mutwa whenever he ventures centrally into the front third.
But he is a very clever mover, a footballer, venturing deep and out wide to pick up the ball, so it must be a concentrated team effort to keep him out. Especially out wide.
Perhaps the biggest chink in the Socceroos armour, and the area Al Mutwa may look to exploit, is in the fullback spots. All the options are raw at this level.
If I was choosing, it would be Heffernan on the left and Matt Thompson on the right.
Heffernan has been terrific for much of this season and had a good-one against Sydney in his most recent game.
Matthew Kemp has had a terrific season and deserves his spot in the squad, but I do worry about his technical ability and finishing at this level. His final ball has improved vastly this season, but is it yet up to international level?
Matt Thompson felt his way though his first two caps, but one senses he is ready for the step up.
He would be my only obvious addition to the nominated team above, with Carle coming in centrally for Vidosic in the unlikely event he succumbs to injury, forcing Brosque out wide.
Otherwise, the preparation has looked good, and the mood appears about right; not too cocky, with plenty needing to prove a point.
Not much has been heard about the hosts this time around, but if the Socceroos remain focussed and can keep their cool, they should at least come away from Kuwait with a share of the points, hopefully more.

Palace fan here. I’m actually a big fan of Carle, but he has big problems with stamina, even when fully fit and playing, he tends to wane in the latter stages of games.
Also, he’s not being kept out of the side by Shaun Derry at all that’s completely wrong… Derry is our holding midfielder, protecting the back four, and occasionally we’ll play two Defensive Midfielders with Derry and Ertl sitting in front of the defence, a job that Carle is neither suited to nor physically equipped for. Instead, he is kept out of the side by Neil Danns – a superb midfielder with everything that Carle has on the ball plus stamina, speed and physicality and weighing in with 4 or 5 goals, and more specifically, Darren Ambrose in Carle’s role as playmaker, who has scored 13 odd goals this season in all competitions. He hasn’t got a look in due to the form of them both… you can’t drop your most dangerous midfielders.
We may well lose Ambrose or Danns in this transfer window due to our precarious financial position and if so, Carle will get his chance i’d imagine.

Thanks for your input and insight James. I know I’m probably messing with Palace royalty a touch by dubbing Derry a hack, but having seen him live last year in March (in the 0-0 home draw with Reading at Selhurst Park) and having seen him closely against Carle in the play-offs a season earlier, I stand by my comments that he’s an avg player. Thankful Victor Moses was at least playing that evening, and made my trip to Selhurst worthwhile, for I only got to see Carle warming up at the break. Moses was all class, the only memorable midfielder on the pitch. Easy to see why he’s in demand now (privately, wouldn’t mind him joining my Liverpool FC, surely Arsenal and Barca don’t need another Maradona….they’ve got enough)
I am familiar with Derry’s break-up role in the team, but I have also seen Carle play in a slightly withdrawn role in a two man central midfield, and cope reasonably well. From what I’ve seen of Warnock, he essentially likes to have his creative players out wide, ensuring the middle is more workmanlike. Danns played against Reading and was solid if unspectacular, and he appeared rather deep to me, with the attacking thrust coming from Moses and Oster. Danns appeared to be hard working and looked suited to a deep central mid role.
Danns’ record this year of 3 goals and 1 assist from 24 games is about on par with what Carle produced last season (3 goals, 3 assists in 35 games). Do you think they could both play together, Danns withdrawn, Carle just in front, thus relegating Derry to the bench, and making Palace’s midfield better on the ball?
I doubt Warnock would do it, for he might consider it too small, or soft (not physical enough), but interested to hear a Palace fans perspective.

Hi Tony,
Derry is a solid, destructive midfielder and that’s about it. But he’s good at what he does and doesn’t try any Hollywood stuff which makes him useful. He’s a poor man’s Nicky Butt!
We’ve changed things around somewhat now since the last game you saw which is why Carle is getting even less game time. We got tonked by Doncaster I think it was, at home and it was then that we switched to two DMs for a while – now back to one, as we simply didn’t have enough players tracking back and protecting. It’s a nice idea to drop Danns and Carle back into paired CMs and would probably work in the Premiership to have two good users of the ball in CM positions, but whenever we skimp on the DM role in the Championship, we get bullied and beaten as other teams crowd the midfield in the CCC.
So essentially what Warnock has done is tailor the team to our three best outfield players – Moses, Ambrose and Danns. Danns has rapidly become the heartbeat of the side… solid, destructive, constructive, good with the ball and can run for 90 mins, and is short but heavy set – he also rarely gives the ball away. So essentially he is a slightly less creative version of Carle, but possesses far more physical presence (a Warnock favourite). As I say though, I really like Carle as a player, I always have since watching him for Bristol City, but he’s on the unfortunate end of two superb inward transfers – Danns and Ambrose.
As I mentioned before though, i’d expect one or both of them to be poached as we are literally on the verge of administration. Carle will get his chance by default unless we attract new investment and quickly. And yes, Moses is the business, it’s just a shame we will lose him as he doesn’t even want to go, he would have been a Palace legend and has the potential to earn us promotion via the playoffs if he kept his form.
Warnock does like wingers, but he isn’t averse to playing creative players anywhere as long as they have cover. Ambrose is a touch slow getting back, and I think he sees Carle in that mould, but Warnock only ever seems to play one, maximum two players who don’t track back and that’s where Carle has fallen foul really… lack of physicality, lack of height and lack of defensive responsibility, all things a Warnock team possesses. I’d love to see Carle in the side if Danns or Ambrose goes, but he needs to be accomodated with cover.
Sorry for the long post.
Cheers,
James

Sorry for the long post.
No need to be sorry, I think most of us would have found what’s going on at Carle’s Palace interesting.

Further to my artilce, I have just had word from another source on the ground in Kuwait City that suggests Verbeek is going to make a late change and bring Carle in for Brosque.

Tony,
marvellous analysis on the game ahead of us; finally a proposed team sheet that we Roos supporters can browse over… As a SFC supporter I am disappointed that Brosque has been replaced.. However, as a long time suffering Nicky Carle supporter and I have felt he has been duly unfairly overlooked by Pim on so many occasions, I am delighted for Nicky; he is to start for this game… I hope he scores a goal and gets the man of the match award… I am so desperate for that to happen, so we can take this overly underrated player by Pim, but a highly rated, gifted and creative player by his fans, which we think is what the Roos need to go to South Africa with …

Based on recent performances, Wilkshire is a better central midfield option than Culina anyway. Culina has had little impact in his recent NT performances, and seems only able to pass the ball sideways to little effect.
Punter said | January 6th 2010 @ 8:51am | Report comment
The player I think Wilshire will replace is Grella. He (Grella) was the main man in 06, one of the true unsung heroes, but in recent times he has been injured or playing injured & not half the player he was. This is a crucial position. In the WC proper I would play Wilshire & Culina in the middle & Williams at right back.
I really hope Pim gives Carle a go. I’m not saying he is the answer but he has got attributes not many of the socceroos has & he should be given a go to seee what he has at international level & if not good enough we don’t take him to the WC. Whereas with a player like Archie Thompson, great A-League player, arguably the best over the 5 year peiod since it’s inception, but he has been given a go & comes up short against good international sides. Lets see what Carle has.

I’d hate to break up the understanding that Emerton and WIlkshire have on the right. When those two play together the entire team lifts another notch!
Carle to score and set up Thompson, 2-0 Aus (It’s probably obvious whose fanboy I am!)
Davstar said | January 6th 2010 @ 8:34am | Report comment
O man why thompson he is utterly usless even if he does play well his 31 and has nothing to offer the socceroos Djit or Ruka shold have been chosen. As for the defence i think he should have played sparia and/or Lorwy most of these defenders wont go to the world cup for sure why not give these young guns a chance stop call them to camp if they are going to not play aso hose defeners are old and have litte to offer in the future. Pim doesnt really care about the socceroos post-world cup ive noticed.
AndyRoo said | January 6th 2010 @ 8:42am | Report comment
I would have liked too see Djite or Ruka as the main striker.
It’s been a while since I have seen Thompson out wide but I wouldn’t mind him in Sterjovski’s spot too make room for Djite or Ruka.
Apart from Vidosic that front 4 look capable of creating and spurrning a lot of chances.
Davstar said | January 6th 2010 @ 9:08am | Report comment
Vidoic is the best one out of the 4 IMO…. his faster then thompson more on target and plays at a much higher level then anyone on the pitch and his the 1st real success story of an A-league player doing well over season in what canbe classed as a world class league. People can argue Jedi is but the turkish super league isnt world class but it still very good. Not to mention Vidoic is only 22.
AndyRoo said | January 6th 2010 @ 9:38am | Report comment
My poor wording their. I was meaning to imply that the other 3 (especially Brosque and Thompson) are hopeless finishers and I put the creating part in their to acknowlege their strenghts.
I didn’t mean to imply Vidosic wont create chances sorry.
I rate him highly, he must be a certainty for Sth Africa as he is two footed, class and offers pace (something we need). For the World cup if he is not a starter he will be our most important sub.
Davstar said | January 6th 2010 @ 9:53am | Report comment
agreed. I was a bit suprised Andyroo at ur comment. I see you on alot of sites most of the time your pretty spot on so i was like how can you not rate Vidoic but fe typos happen

Less than 12 months since we played Kuwait in Canberra and look at the team. Expect to see 7 A-League players on the field tonight.
But how many started in Canberra…..meaning the National Coach stuffed up big-time, in my view, with his teams selections.
More so that many of his starting A-League players that Canberra night aren’t EVEN in the squad this time!
Matt Simon, Matt McKay, Michael Zullo, Daniel Mullen, Matt Thompson, Mitch Nicholls, Tom Pondeljak all played a part in Canberra. None will start tonight, most aren’t even in Kuwait!
Did a National Coach ever change a squad so much in under 10 months?
And surely if you’re not in the starting eleven tonight you have no chance of making the final World Cup places….so goodbye Nikita, Matty Spiranovic, Bruce Djite if the above team is correct.
Here’s hoping Vidosic stakes a claim. We need someone pushing through for a front third spot, someone younger and he could be the bolter.
Davstar said | January 6th 2010 @ 9:13am | Report comment
I agree vidoic needs to go but also Lorwy will go to the world cup his played regulary and pim has had him in every camp for the last 6 months. Im suprised his not playing him to be honest he’s been on Loan in england the last 6 months playing regulary at a higher level then the A-league imo, it’s because his young? Neverless i think he should play somewhere in defence Craige Moore is passed it our defence is going to get munched tonight but i hope that happens i want Moore to get dropped for the WC squad. Whilkshire, Jedi and VIdoic will be the difference this time around im expecing a free scoring game something like 1-2 or 2-3 Australia will win though if we dont the A-league will pay for it. Thompson to miss a clear cut one-on-one goal chance and hopefully never wear the green and gold again
AndyRoo said | January 6th 2010 @ 9:49am | Report comment
Pim wasn’t in control for the first Kuwait game he had a ban from the AFC so I don’t know how much interest he showed in the last squad and how much was Arnolds doing.
For this team I have seen him and his Dutch mate pointed out in the stands a lot at A league games.
Art Sapphire said | January 6th 2010 @ 9:21am | Report comment
I thought the main criteria to get a game for the Socceroos or any national team for that matter was playing regular football. This does not seem to be the case with some of the pundits on this thread.
Current League Stats 09/10 season – 17 league games
Djite – 5 appearances off the bench – 100 minutes of football – 0 goals – 1 assist
Ruka – 2 appearances off the bench – 38 minutes of football – 0 goals
Compare this to
Archie – 20 matches – 1800 minutes – 7 goals – 5 assists
Brosque – 21 matches – 1877 minutes – 6 goals – 7 assists
You can’t just select teams based on potential.
Davstar said | January 6th 2010 @ 10:05am | Report comment
Dijt and ruka were guns in the A-league but there struggling in Europe that is were the void in level comes in Archie and Brosque were in europe at points of there Career and couldn’t make the bench but they are gunning it in the A-league get my drift. Im not having ago at the A-league i think its great but we must remember its still young and the standards still gotta long way to go.
There are 4 main problems with the A-league:
1. Way to much space, Pim has pointed out the distance from defence from midfield is not compact enough. So games in the A-league give strikers to much room hence why so many A-league stikers fail overseas but do well in the HAL
2. Too physical not enough technical ability
3. Plays to slow, coaching tactics and players awerness of players is well above par.
4. The refs have a long way to go, too many wrong calls and bad dicisions being made.
It takes time rome wasnt built in a day right thats why Pim knows the A-leagues standard and so does anyone who can read football
Here is a good example Robbie Fowler is 33 and was playing in league 1 (3rd div england) and comes to the A-league and dominates it.
Art Sapphire said | January 6th 2010 @ 10:23am | Report comment
Davstar – I agree with you on many of your points in regards to the A-League. But we still don’t know whether Ruka or Djite will ever make the top grade in Europe. Sure, there is the potential, but the jury is still out and the 2 of them not getting regular football does not help us in coming to a quick convenient conclusion.
In the mean time Pim has a decision to make and he has always said that he will pick the players playing regular football over the ones that are not. If he starts Ruka and Djite ahead of Archie he will look like a hypocrite.
Davstar said | January 6th 2010 @ 10:34am | Report comment
I understand what your say but in real terms the national coach must pick his best players to win the match and help the nations footbal future. Archie is 31 and personally i think ruka is better and his only 23 Ruk going to the wold cup wil in 2010 help us in 2014 Archie wont. But i know Thompson will start but he will come off on the 2nd half i hope he gves Ruka or Dijt ago. As you can see im a fan of young talent its why im not pims biggest fan playing Oldies like Moore and CHippers when his got Lowry and David Carney in our 1st team in matchs that are friendlies
Art Sapphire said | January 6th 2010 @ 11:01am | Report comment
Davstar – Ruka won’t be going to the world cup in 2010 if he can’t play regular football. He has played 38 minutes of first team football so far this season and unless table-topping Twente has some huge injury crisis, I can’t see him getting much more in the second half of the season. Carney has a hard enough time getting a game there. Nashat Akram the gifted Iraqi midfielder is also in the same boat at Twente. Its hard cracking into a team that is firing on all cylinders.
Davstar said | January 6th 2010 @ 2:45pm | Report comment
Yea but spria and dijt can transfer or go on loan and make the squade players like Heffener have no chance so why play them? they have no future cause they are already old what the point? if it was tommy ora who 18 then febut Kemp 29 and earning his 1st cap whats the point?
Marcel said | January 6th 2010 @ 5:03pm | Report comment
Brosque – 21games – 6 goals – 61 missess (only 25 of which were actually on target).
Brian said | January 6th 2010 @ 9:32am | Report comment
I know Pim never plays two up-front but if the Phoenix + Smeltz can draw in Bahrain surely the best from the HAL can have some ambition in much lower ranked Kuwait.
Eeamon makes a good point about Pim’s selections, why so many changes, surely the HAL team must be given a chance to develop
Art Sapphire said | January 6th 2010 @ 9:50am | Report comment
Why so many changes? Well Brian, lets just say that some of the players selected to play against Kuwait the first time round were cack. As Eamonn said, Pim stuffed up big time first time around. The team that will play tonight is a much stronger on paper than the team that played in Canberra.
Davstar said | January 6th 2010 @ 2:48pm | Report comment
Well pim also didnt have some of the return player he had last time around as well and most of the players that plaed last time didnt do a good job or are out of form atm thus remember we were highly tiped to win and we were defeated at home i dont blame him for changing the squad.
