My mate Jeff reckons the NRL Indigenous All Star guys are “morals” against the NRL All Stars because they will be more passionate. The build up for this game, to be played on the Gold Coast at Skilled Stadium on Feb. 13, has been enormous and promises to be a sell out and a TV ratings bonanza.
I always enjoy a debate (or argument) with my mate as we are both opinionated and it is not easy to dig our feet from the sand.
I take Jeff’s point about how passionate the Indigenous All Stars will be and I am sure they will not require a pep talk prior to running on, but it is also hard to imagine that the NRL All Stars will not be revved up also.
For the first time ever and probably never to be seen again, the Australian Captain Darryn Lockyer and the Kiwi skipper Benji Marshall will play alongside each other. That prospect has even excited the composed coach Wayne Bennett.
“One of the exciting things to me is that they (Lockyer and Marshall) can all play together for the first time in their careers.
“I spoke to Benji recently and I’ve got to say that he was so excited about the fact that he would be playing with Lockyer and I know that Lockyer is excited about getting to play with him.
“Just those two alone, I just want to spend a week with them and enjoy their company and watch them play football.”
Given that Benjy was an automatic selection his club team, the Wests Tigers can field another player and we may have the prospect of English International Gareth Ellis playing which would be an added twist to this game, and a treat for his forward team mates who he was against in the recent 4 Nations.
I think the NRL All Stars squad of 20 will look something this:
1. Billy Slater
2. Jarryd Hayne
3. Israel Folau
4. Josh Morris
5. Manu Vatuvei
6. Darryn Lockyer
7. Benji Marshall
8. Adam Blair
9. Cam Smith
10. Petero Civoniceva
11. Anthony Watmough
12. Gareth Ellis
13. Ben Creagh
Others
14. Kurt Gidley
15. Luke Douglas
16. Luke O’Donnell
17. Alan Tongue
18. Anthony Laffranchi
19. Dave Taylor
20. Nat Myles
The Indigenous All Stars will need more than just passion for my mate to be right.

ScottWoodward.me I come to this with a different emphasis. i was deeply impressed by an interview given by Scott prince and Preston Campbell. They spoke with genuine passion. I can only affirm and support this game. To reinforce this $1.5 million in takings will be directed to charities with over half to indigenous causes..
That australian rugby league can put on the field a very good professional indigenous rugby league team and still leave out Bowen Tahu Bird and others says much about rugby league’s deep community connections.
I have always had a declared soft spot for this game’s community and tribal links. It is in many ways its weakness yet paradoxically its protection . it is quite redemptive in nature.. I for one was glad that Wendell got another chance and it was Australian rugby league who took the risk and gave him that chance.
Any code in Australia would be proud to have this game.
It lifts not only the indigenous community but our whole community . whatever your vice I urge you to watch and enjoy it as a celebration of survival and potential.

funny you keep saying to keep away from rugby league threads but you couldn’t help yourself. when did i ever mention a ARU Indigenous team ?
i can help you if you want to talk about Indigenous rugby union teams in new zealand, samoa, tonga and fiji but that’s another thread.

Not interested in hearing about any indigenous RU teams from other countries thanks, just Australia.
RU is only slightly better than cricket when it comes to involving our Indigenous communities — and that is only because Beale got a Joeys scholarship to pry him away from the Panthers.

You can’t extricate the connection between the Joeys offer to Beale and RU officials.

He grew up in an aboriginal community in Forster and was there in the holidays.
nb: the best way to promote RL over RU is to talk about its strengths, not bag the opposition, and this up coming game is just that.

Siva Samoa and Foxy Loxy. If you heard Preston Campbell interwiewed you would know this is a good promotion.Siva Samoans tongans and Fijians are fine people but are not indigenous to Australia they are migrants just like me. They will and are making a good contribution to Australia
This game is one “any” Australian code would be proud of. I think it is important to acknowledge when rugby league is socially constructive .
It is called balance. Without it rugby union criticism of Australian rugby league simply becomes one of jealous spite.
Player behaviour hurts the game this uplifts it.Not to acknowledge this becomes mindless bias. End of story.

Hmm I think the All Stars will take it comfortably by halfway through the second half.
Passion can only get you so far (plus Thurston is totally over rated. Sooner rather then later people will stop falling for his dummy passes and he will fizzle in attack)
What I would love to see is the Dreamtime team (with its top players) rematch with the Maori Team (top players included, probably half the Kiwis squad).
Now that would be a cracker of a game.
My Maori team –
1. Karmichael Hunt (Nothing needs to be said)
2. Sam Perrett
3. Timana Tahu (LOL! if the dreamtime team didnt want him we’d have him!)
4. Bryson Goodwin
5. Jason Nightingale
6. Benji Marshall
7. Lance Hohaia
8. Adam Blair
9. Issac Luke
10. Greg Eastwood
11. Jared Waerea Hargreaves
12. Frank Pritchard
13. Bronson Harrison
14. David Kidwell
15. Chase Stanley
16. Sam Rapira
17. Kevin Locke

What about the fact that K is playing RU in France and then signed to play AFL.
….and BTW you need to watch more of Thurston, he is much more than dummy passes. You have had too much kava if you dont think he is the real deal.

Hodges will be a big loss to the indigenous team. He is a very strong defensive centre and forgive my background reads the lines in defence like a rugby centre. He and Cooper for Stgeorge share this quality whereas other centres are a little too straight up or in.

Westy I had this point of view with Peter Tunks over coffee only 2 days ago. he also thinks Hodges is a good defensive center and I dont.
Sure he is big mobile and strong, but he reads lateral runners poorly. Someone like jennings would have no problems wrong footing him. Having said that, Jennings would not be able to stop him either.
