The upcoming All Stars match at Skilled Park could just be the game that introduces and re-introduces people outside the heartlands to the game of Rugby League.
The match, which will be played before the start of the season, must be shown around the country to simply show people what the game has to offer, even if it’s just to show them that the game of Rugby League isn’t just a soap opera with the off-field incidents they hear about. Rather to actually show them the skill and passion the game holds.
The promotion of the game has been fantastic. Hearing players like Preston Campbell and Jonathon Thurston describe what this match already means to them. The passion is already there, and dare we dream we could have
another match which will drive the same passion and excitement that State of Origin has given us for 30 years.
Not long now until the kick-off. So to those who love or loathe the game, I do suggest you tune in on February 13 and watch what will be one of the matches of the year .

I think you are on dangerous ground to attack this ALL Stars v Indigenous Dreamtime game or any of the AFL’s previous preseason indigenous games. This has been pitched as a celebration of survival and contribution .
I thought Michael C may have been a little more generous whilst still highlighting AFL strong indigenous committment. AFL and rugby league have some substance in this area.
The date of this game was chosen to coincide with the exact date of Rudd’s apology to the stolen generation not to coincide with any super 14 game. This by the way is not the opening game of the 2010 super 14 season that privilege goes to the Bulls on the previous night.
The leaders of the indigenous team Campbell and Prince have been very genuine . Campbell made it clear that it was a continuation of the spirit of the Australian indigenous team that played against Maori rugby league team as the preliminary game to the RLWC game in Sydney in 2008. He said the players took great pride in the Aboriginal war dance as they advanced on the Maoris. The first steps were tenative but then he said grew in confidence . the spears were useful too! Assumptions that aboriginals were not warriors are misplaced.
I am not sure it is a topic for inter code rivalry.
This is not all media hype there is genuine support for the game because it is simply good. i can think of no better word

I thought I had put this up on another post . the date of the NRL All Stars v Dreamtime indigenous team was chosen to to coincide with Rudd’s apology to the stolen generation on 13 Feb 2008 .

The NRL ALL Stars v NRL Dreamtime game on Feb 13 is a celebration of survival contribution and commemoration..

There is real support for this game beyond media hype.
It is simply good.

I agree with your sentiment. Putting aside code wars (or the more recent approach on The Roar of arguing about who should or shouldn’t be allowed in a thread) this is simply a good cause to celebrate.

I watched that game, and there was 2 men and a dog at the game. So a smaller stadium for the 1st game seems about right, you dont want to book a large stadium these days and have it half empty. The game will eventually grow into a 50 thousand crowd game hopefully, but like origin, it started with 10 thousand crowds, the public has made the game what it is today.
Rugby league should not over-play it’s hand, take the Paris game, a 5 thousand crowd, to me, that was fine, given that they dont watch the game. (4 nations game played in Paris.) What they should do next time is play the game in Perpinon, at least they can then see a result in crowd figures, and report that to the rugby league faithful.

We wanted the game in Perpignan for the 4nations, but they prefered Paris for some reasons which are sensible to bring up the game…i was so sad i live next to the stadium in Perpignan

The Toulouse game got a good turn out..I thought it was risky with game in Paris..but even though they were smashed week before and also smashed by Poms in Paris eariler in year..they still got the same crowd

we keep hope…but in france, people are interessed by a sport when it got good results, so the day when france could rivalise with england nz and aussie, we will get some media coverage, but long is the road…

for sure, Toulouse will probably get a SL team for 2012, another stream for the juniors, 4nations the experience to play against better teams..I also would like NRL and Super League teams to bring out some under 22′s players to train and even play with top grades so they can get experience

its a great idea but someone has already written a very interesting article on this site but i cant remember his name. by the way i usually go to the catalans dragons trial pre season game each year, so i went there again yesterday, and i’ve never ever seen such a big crowd for a pre season game (and dallas johnson was not even playing)

OMG Foxy Loxy you truely are an amazing human being. the reason the lions series were not completley sold out was the fact that the average south african could not afford the huge prices for tickets. yet everybody was glued to their tv sets watching i myself could not afford a ticket and was in the city centere with a huge tv in the middle of it with the whole of Cape Town. Foxy you live in denial and fear that rugby is 100 times bigger than league get over it.

Take it up with Eric Janssen and Paul Ackford. You obviously didn’t read the linked story.
“I’m told South Africans are blaming high ticket prices for the low attendances, but get over it. There are many ways to save a few rands to buy a ticket … don’t throw a whole damn kudu on your bbq next time; drink fewer disgusting brandy and cokes; give the escort agency a miss next week; save legal costs by not shooting someone soon. Tickets were far from cheap in 2005, but that did not stop people – real rugby fans – from filling the stadiums.”
Anyway, the point is that a Lions tour is hardly the solution to lift RU in Australia from its current 4th placed popularity. I don’t care about the rest of the world.

Thus proving the SARU is stupid.

Rugby union isn’t far away from becoming a minority sport in Australia.

Ahhhhh great how you sterotype the whole of SA Fox. i dont think you quite realise that R2000 is dam expensive for tickets, i dont think many people can just get over saving over $600. a lions tour may not save oz rugby but it will help it. that statement just sums you up, i dont care for the rest of the world! you sound like one of those rednecks who proclaim that there ideas and beliefs are better than anybody elses, i agree with SA, for some reason and i really dont no why you fear rugby and bag it because it is the bigger game worldwide and you probably wish league could be like it.
Realist rugby is booming around the world.

Maybe so, but it’s going backwards in Australia.

This has been in the pipeline for some time. It(the concept) was involved from the outset by Searle of the Titans. The Titan’s ground as a consequence should be the ones to host the event first up.The ground is one of the best I have attended for viewing ,for atmosphere, and it is a world class rectangular stadium, that will be filled to the rafters.
By all means have it at Suncorp next year.It will be on FTA in NSW and Qld and of course tucked away in some ridiculous time slot in the AFL states.it will rate its proverbials off.The next Tv contract must be with a Tv station that aspires to be a national station and show sport nationally, not the tokenism that ch9 under the influence no doubt of Eddie M.
As a celebration of the indigenous players and their influence in the running game,it is worthy of all the support it can muster.
To bring in the Reds(on Pay TV)and yes some like watching the Reds and The Broncos and compare the concept to the Barbarians is ludicrous, when the fans are actually involved in the selection process for the rl. I don’t know where the monies from Barbarian matches go.I do know the indigenous people will receive benefits from the event in their community.

I’m sure that even RU fans like myself will be watching the All Stars vs Indigenous game come Feb 13 (and the Reds-NSW game).
These two RL rep sides are a rare unity of talent from two, and even three, countries (provided Garth Ellis makes the list). I have no interest in bagging RL on this. I am simply looking forward to what promises to be a cracking game of footy!!

I agree that this game is a great advertisement for Rugby League. Here in Tassie we have just recommenced Senior Grade Rugby League with 4 Teams participating. We hope to grow that to 8 next season. The game is growing here because of the influence of the Melbourne Storm and with the support of the ARL.
Lets hope Channel Nine and WIN do the right thing and show the All Stars game live in Tasmania.
