Geoff Huegill’s bid to qualify for this year’s Commonwealth Games remains on track after he took out the 50m butterfly at the Victorian Open swimming championships on Saturday night.

The 30-year-old, who has shed more than 50kg since returning to the sport after a four-year absence, stopped the clock in 24.20secs to take first place ahead of Ryan Pini from Papua New Guinea and training partner Andrew Lauterstein.

Huegill was national title holder in the event for six consecutive years from 1999 to 2004.

He said things were on track ahead of the Australian Championships in Sydney in March, which will double as selection trials for the Pan Pacific Championships and Commonwealth Games.

“I think every meet from here on in is just going to be another stepping stone and a good opportunity to not only race hard, but to focus on all the little things as well,” said Huegill.

“There are only eight weeks to go until we stand behind the blocks for trials and with last year being a big year to do a lot of racing and get some training under the belt, now is definitely the fun part of the preparation.”
