Tony, I see Mathew Leckie is now being talked about as a possible world cup bolter after another great effort tonight, a week after you raised the prospect here first.

Ross Aloisi was of the opinion he needs to work on his ball skills.

Cheers Tony, look forward to your next column...

btw Foxe going up to the front caught everyone by surprise even Andy Harper and Mike Cockerill... I can't wait for the game at Skilled Park and will take the grand kids to watch Culina play as you suggest... tho their main focus is always watching what "the Beach" supporters get up to rather than watching the football... :)

Cheers Gaz, thanks for the comment. As for Culina, after a great start to the season, there was a period there when Melbourne were flying, with Hernandez running the show, and I was thinking he might actually be more valuable than Culina, but in the past month or so JC has really stepped it up, taken his game to another level.

If I was managing/coaching any aspiring youngster, I would get some copies of his work this season and make them watch it, over an over again.

Better still, take them down to a GCU game and make their eyes track Culina for the full 90.

Phenomenal stuff.

AF, make no mistake, I was under no illusion about how important Brosque is to the structure of the Sydney side, and mentioned to a few journos that I thought Sydney were in trouble without Brosque in the side.

He has been the man all season, even pre-season.

But even I didn’t expect them to miss him as much as they did in this evening. Aloisi and Bridge were very very ineffective.

Regarding the tactics, Miron and Culina made no secret afterwards that they went out there to put immediate pressure on Sydney, not to let them get any rhythm, and that worked a treat.

Tony,
thanks for another interesting analysis of the SFC v GCU fixture... I was disappointed in SFC how they started and the game never went the way I had expected until midway through the second half as GCU were intent after getting the early goal to tighten up the defensive midfield with Panta coming in and hit SFC on the counter...

Miron/Paul really took me by surprise with the starting XI with Porter starting and to come out of the blocks the way they did to get the early first half goal (a surprise attack)... All well thought out maybe but took a gamble putting the foot down on the peddle and getting the early goal before they started to fatigue.. I was expecting them to conserve their low stocks of energy after playing last Wednesday night ... I think SFC tactics were to be patient for the first 10-15 mins then to ramp up the pressure but to say it completely back fired would be an understatement it allowed Culina and Caravella to weave their magic and Thwaite to dominate the SFC forwards.. Of course SFC’s Brosque was a big missing factor which gave the GCU defence a much easier task...

I was of the same opinion as you that Brosque was not as important to the team as much as I thought; now it seems he is the vital piece to the SFC unit... I also think that the game showed up Corica, as good as he has been for SFC in the past years he can’t match the Culina and Caravella perpetual motion and Kisel has not lived up to his CV for mine albeit he has had some good games for SFC, but lacks the movement of Culina or even Caravella...

To sum up my thoughts, SFC were disappointing playing at SFS with the home ground advantage and GCU were magnificent, as the away team to play the game the way they did, after a midweek fixture against an ever improving Jets...

The next two games are important for SFC and GCU to the run home.. It’s going to go right down to the wire with the MV with a game in hand... What an amazing finish to the season once again.. I shall be at Fortress Miron to watch the fixture with visitors Melb Vic coming to play... That game may determine the Premiership title and a game GCU will win.. With a revenge factor in mind with the players narrowly beaten at home with 10 men and a penalty retake for Muscat and beaten in Melbourne with a reserve team taking the field... I don’t think GCU will need much motivation for that return fixture in Robina..
