Is Arnie not letting players back into the Roos?

There was a curious piece of television on SBS’ The World Game program on Sunday and I’m not just talking about the awkward yet hilarious piece of producing that left host David Basheer blushing 4:43 into this segment.
During Les Murray’s Football Focus, Les and Craig Foster took a look at Australia’s defence and in particular the centre back pairing.
It was astonishing to hear that thirteen different combinations have been used in that position by coach Pim Verbeek in his 26 games in charge of the Socceroos.
When Murray and Foster were considering playing options for the position, Eddy Bosnar’s name came up. They also pondered why Bosnar has never been selected during Pim Verbeek’s tenure and it’s a good question.
Now, there have been a lot of misconceptions about Bosnar right throughout his career. For starters, there are those who think Bosnar is arrogant and has an over-inflated opinion of himself.
Meanwhile, the lumbering defender’s supporters tend to hold him in some kind of imaginary regard as a flawless footballer without having ever seen him play.
As my fellow Roar colleague Mike Tuckerman has written a number of times, Bosnar is prone to the occasional lapse in concentration. The thing is, and this is where Bosnar challenges his doubters, the former Everton defender will readily admit to them.
I spent an afternoon with Bosnar in Tokyo last year, and during that time, he came across as both a generous and decent bloke.
For what it’s worth, there is a perception amongst English journalists that despite them being, rich footballers are tight. Well. I’ve found that not to be true for Australian footballers in Europe who always seem determined to pick up the bill and give you lifts around town.
Bosnar was no exception. But I digress.
At the time, both on and off the record, the then JEf United Chiba defender was honest about his football talents and what he could offer the Socceroos. He knew he was never going to go to a World Cup, but if he could help the team in some way, he’d be willing.
It’s no secret that Bosnar wasn’t happy with how things ended with the Socceroos back during Frank Farina’s time in charge. But why would that have an effect now?
I suspect the answer might be Farina’s old mate, assistant coach Graham Arnold.
Bosnar has never mentioned anything about Arnold, but a couple other former Socceroos have. Over the last few months two separate former players have said to me in private that they don’t ever expect to make it back into the national team because they’ve had problems with Arnold.
Jesse Fink wrote about the issue recently for The World Game. Other then making a nice little South Park reference, Fink was alarmed by Neil Kilkenny’s absence from any national team squad since he fell out with Arnold during the Olyroos insipid campaign at the Beijing Olympics.
Seeing as Kilkenny recently bossed Manchester United’s midfield around the park, it’s a valid point.
As Fink wrote, “the Socceroos are stacked with options (in Kilkenny’s position) and this could theoretically explain his continued freezing out from the national team. But I’m not buying it.
“Kilkenny’s playing regular first-team football. Yes, for a League One team, but that hasn’t stopped Kisnorbo or Chris Coyne (at Colchester) before him from getting opportunities with the Socceroos.
“And table-topping Leeds, barring calamity, are on their way back to the Championship next season and, after that, possibly the Premiership.
“Are Kilkenny’s talents really that superfluous that he’s not even in the mix for World Cup selection?”
As Arnold has always been the linkman between the players and the coaching staff, as well as the man who sets up and conducts sessions at training, it would make sense that those ‘Arnie’ doesn’t fancy, won’t get a look in.
We might not be talking about world-beaters, but they are players who could help come March’s game against Indonesia. We’ve never heard from Arnold on the issue, but the players on the outer certainly feel like they’ve become “Arnie’s outcasts”.
If they’re right, then it’s a pity that the Socceroos’ squad selections still aren’t exempt from the politics that has dogged the national team for so long.

No one in Football in Australia can work out how GA is still there … best guess he has some photos that will get folk into trouble… Another guess is he was signed by JON will cash was tight… Hopefully he can go on and do something but everything he has touched in a coaching position has turned bad … from the Northern Spirit to the Olympic’s..
In fact it’s time that GA, FF & Kossie were told they are not football ….

Pimbo seems to be his own Man and I think he and Henk Duut are running the show and I don’t think GA has any more power in the team selections.
Its a tough job for Pimbo and he will be under a lot of pressure to get things right – but he has a fantastic win record with this team and against higher ranked nations, so I’ll go with whatever he chooses.
I hope he uncovers another Luke Wilkshire or the like, at this year’s tournament
Interestingly GA was in the Everton dugout sitting alongside the Everton training staff for the game against Man City last weekend – did anyone else see him?
Wonder what he was doing? – I guess trying to learn something and I wonder who paid for his trip and his tickets to the game – the FFA or was he invited by Moyes or Cahill?

Agree with you, pimbo. I think Pim is big enough to make his own call on players. He may ask for Arnie’s opinion, but Pim makes the final call. However, it does seem curious that a guy like Bosnar, who’s played in England, the Netherlands as well as Japan, has been overlooked – especially when Beauchamp, North, and Coyne have been given their chances. Ditto for Kilkenny, though I think his good form may see him make a late push for the WC squad.
The FFA really got it wrong by not appointing a coach immediately after the 2006 WC, only to then paint itself into a corner by offering Arnie, an assistant coach, a 4-year contract. What should have happened was that a coach should have been chosen in ’06, who would then have had the power to choose his own support staff. Troussier, when he applied for the job, wanted this, but the FFA told him he would have to work with Arnold. It was crazy! Would Fabio Capello have stood for that, being told by the English FA who he had to work with? Not bloody likely. The FFA probably didn’t want to pay out Arnie’s contract, but if that’s true, then it reeks of bad planning. Instead, we were stuck with GA.

Wasnt Arnie offered a coaching/managers role in Belgium a year or two ago?

I know for a fact that Scott MacDonald and Arnie have never got on (he left him out of the Athens Olympics). Scott has basically been told he is not going to the world cup and im sure Arnie is the man behind this.

No.
Pimbo gave Scottie plenty of chances and he failed to score and he’s trying a couple of other options.
Arnie’s not in the picture any more and Pimbo picks the best team for the job.
Won’t really matter who he picks as striker, because the way Pimbo will play,TIm Cahill will again be our best striker at the World Cup and lead the Aussie goal scoring chart.

How is scotty meant to score when he never gets the ball?
Pim = Long ball into the box, Cahill or Kennedy to get the header
This may work good and well against 5 foot Qatari players, but do we really think it’s going to work against German, Ghanaian and Serbian defenders?

Agree with you Axelv that Pimbo doesn’t have the best tactics, but he has the best results – the best record of any Socceroos Manager we have ever had and qualified undefeated.
Sometimes it wasn’t pretty, but you can’t argue with the results.

John Boultbee was one of the reason we beat Uruguay in the qualifiers… He introduced the Qantas jet with massage tables and beds and oxygen masks instead of seats with no additives to fly the squad around the world… As the high performance Football manager a lot of his initiatives helped to get us across the line in 2006 he has been the brains behind the scenes…

Graham Arnold has been a great servant to Australian Football and wore his heart on his sleeve for the country when he first started out as a player; he would take a bullet for the country if necessary… As an assistant coach for Farina and Guus and finally as the national coach his dream of playing captaining and finally becoming the national coach was fulfilled…
His heart and loyalty can never be question; it will always remain with the green and gold of the Australian National Football Team…
But unfortunately that has not transpired into a quality football manager… I don’t totally blame him for all of his failures, as he did not have the proper backing from the FFA when given the job to manage the Australian Football Team for the Asian Championships…
For the Olyroos he was in the group of death and even the very best managers would not have progress out of that group he was in; with a squad primarily made up of state league players up against players of the likes of Messi and co….
The other problem with Arnie he was an out and out striker and strikers never make good managers anyway… He was too close to the players at the beginning of his national football coaching career and that was carried over to when he finally became the national coach…
He made decisions with his heart and not his head and when he tried to distance himself from the players in the end it was all too late… The player then saw him as a back stabber to their football careers…
In saying that most of all I don’t think he has the quality that all good managers should have and that is the ability to manager player personalities with big egos..
With Arnie I believe he feels that some goals are so worthy that it is even glorious to fail…
