Zorba claims Bennett is not a great coach

I enjoy my Sunday mornings lying in bed listening to Peter Peters talk about Rugby League on SKY radio (2KY). I am not sure if he is someone I would like to share a beer with, but I respect his opinion.
But when he declared that Wayne Bennett is not a great coach, I thought I was still dreaming.
Zorba made the point that whoever is the Brisbane coach, he is entitled to do very well and win premierships because he is a one town team. If that is the case, the current Broncos coach must be a nervous man as they have gone backwards since Bennett left, conceding over 42 missed tackles every game.
Bennett went to St George after losing Gasnier and Ryles and still managed to win the Minor Premiership, after just assisting the Kiwis to win the World Cup over Australia.
Did you take note, Zorba?
Australia were beaten by a weaker team that Bennett was instrumental in master minding.
Plenty of coaches have tried to win a Grand Final by buying the best players, but unless you can coach, it doesn’t work. Bennett won six Grand Finals (from six appearances) in 21 years with the Broncos, and often he did not have the best list.
Zorba should go back a replay the 2006 Grand Final when the Broncos defeated the Storm.
Bennett knew that he could not beat the Storm if the game was played on an even footing. He needed an edge, and put together a brilliant strategy that sent his opposing coach, his former apprentice Craig Bellamy, to hospital on a drip after the game.
Bennett deducted that the Storm could not win without their “rudder” Cam Smith and the champion Greg Inglis.
He was correct.
Loyal servant Toni Carroll was given the kamikaze role of tackling Cam Smith early in the game. When he did, the Storm skipper did not get up, and was in cuckoo land for the rest of the game.
Greg Inglis was also a non-factor as he was bottled up all game in a most unusual tactic using a combination of three players.
Bellamy, just like Ricky Stuart in the World Cup, was simply out-coached.
Not only is Wayne Bennett a great coach, he is a living legend, and if Zorba has a different view, then name someone with a better record.

Hansie,
The fact that he has won 6 GFs from 6 attemps suggest he knows how to get a team up.
The Broncos should have played Manly in the GF 2 years ago instead of the Storm. 30 seconds to go and Ashton Sims took the ball up and incredibly lost it allowing Inglis to score on the bell. Cruel, it hurt me to write that.

He’s obviously doing something right, when the Broncos started, from memory did he not have Lewis, Langer, Walters etc etc etc and then all the QLD Canberra Raiders to draw from for SOO.
Essentially though he had the cattle, something similar to Malthouse at the WCE who had really a WA SOO team to choose from, but Bennetts record is superior to Malthouses.

He had them all when he started, just that he sacked Lewis to get Walters in at 5/8

Skull, Ribot sacked Lewis. Wally wanted another 2 years and Ribot said only 1. Ribot was correct as Wally went to the Gold Coast and went terrible.

but Scott, how much of Lewis going “terrible” for the Gold Coast had to do with his surroundings though?? Wasn’t he still good enough to play Origin then (or had he retired by that stage)??

Brett,
Wally cud probably play SOO now because he is Wally and wud get up, but for the week in week out of club footy, he was gooooone.
I went to Seagulls once just to watch him and he was fly blown. Could hardly get out of a fast walk.

He is not recognized for the players that he has uncovered and/or brought out the best in. Do u remember Hodges playing under Ricky Stuart at the Roosters? He went to Bennett and became the best center in the world.
How many coaches would tell the world’s best fullback that he was playing 5/8th? Lockyer went on to become the best pivot also.

Peter Peters is pathetic, and his column in each Saturday’s Manly Daily even more so. He is just an apologist for misbehaving man-children. League players may be dills, but they all listen when Bennett speaks. Anyone who takes Peters seriously should soon get a visit from men in white coats.

Because he is opinionated he will always get people off side, but I wud much rather have that than goody 2 shoes commentators who sit on the fence and only say nice things.
