Details of a new national basketball tournament are set to be announced on Thursday featuring a number of rule changes to hype the sport’s appeal to fans.
Much like cricket’s moves to spice up its action and appeal with the introduction of Twenty20 games, basketball’s new tournament is expected to feature some innovative modifications to its rules.
The event – described by a former prominent basketball official as a “mini IPL cricket scenario” – will have a six-figure prizemoney lure and be televised nationally.
It would be played over one week in April.
NBL players will be eligible to compete in the tournament, restricted to eight teams who’ll be corporately owned for the week.
It’s understood the event has the backing of both Basketball Australia and the NBL.
Details of the new tournament will be announced in Adelaide on Thursday morning.

It’s not endorsed by BA or NBL at all. Just a private venture aimed at making profits for the event’s organiser. Highly unlikely the top NBL players will play either.
