I recently chatted with Neil Cordy, an ex AFL player who currently works for Channel 10. Channel 10’s dedicated sports channel ONE will screen a magazine style football show in February where Neill will contribute some stories.
Neil shared his football experiences; we spoke about the chances of the Socceroos at the World Cup; and also got some information regarding the new football show that has fans of the world game in Australia buzzing.
Half Time Heroes: So I hear you’re a football fan?
Neil Cordy: I’ve been a football fan virtually all my life. Since I was a teenager I started following the English First Division in the 70s. I used to watch Match of the Day on the ABC at 6pm and I subscribed to Shoot magazine. It was great publication. I read it religiously.
West Ham was the team I followed. I used to watch The Big Match also on the ABC, and it was produced by London TV. So we got all the London teams. West Ham was a very attractive team to watch. Trevor Brooking was an outstanding talent. They also had some great characters in the team, like Frank Lampard Senior.
HTH: You witnessed the World Cup in Germany 2006. How do you think the Socceroos will fare at the World Cup in South Africa this year?
NC: I hope we advance to the next stage, but I think it’s going to be a bigger challenge. I think we have a more difficult group this time than the one we had in Germany. The other thing is, our playing group has barely changed from that time. Some of them are a little bit past their prime.
HTH: All football fans are buzzing at the news Channel 10 is going to air a football variety show shown on the dedicated digital free-to-air sports station, One. Can you give us more information?
NC: Sure “World Football News” will be starting on February the 8th. It will have a mixture of international and Australian content, with panelists discussing issues with stories and features. It will be a combination of all those things. We will have an English based reporter who will be catching up with a lot of our guys that are playing overseas.
HTH: As an ex-AFL player, what did you think about the FFA and the AFL arguing in public? And will it affect Australia’s bid for the World Cup?
NC: I’ll say a couple of things about that. I think we are actually going to win the bid. I genuinely believe we will win it for 2022. It just stacks up right. We are the right country at the right time. From Andrew Demetriou’s point of view I haven’t heard him ask any unreasonable questions.
I think it’s not unreasonable to ask for some more detail and I don’t think he is necessarily trying to undermine the bid. But I think it is reasonable to ask what is required, so they can get their games in order.
It’s a big thing that they going to have to work around and be in co-operation with. So he obviously thinks they haven’t been given enough detail from the FFA.

Looking very much to the 1 hour football show on OneHD. Small step forward for the game but it is a step forward. Not doubt OneHD are trying to capitalise on the biggest sporting event this year and possibly get a few ‘runs on the board’ for the future. Hopefully at least half of the time is spent discussing Oz football and HAL, particularly with the finals coming up…plenty to discuss. Neil Cordy seems like a true sports reporter (although an ex AFL player) he still mamges objectivity. Being in Germany WC 2006 he has seen how big football is and is in a good position, with his background, to convey that across to the ‘great unwashed’
Having said that here’s hoping they find a couple of football ‘personalties’ in Oz to work on the show, ala Bozza.

note MV Dave – the Cordy boys grew up in Traralgon – as I stated on another tab – back in those days, there was almost more soccer content available on TV than there was replay/live VFL content…….well, when you had channel 0 and ABC only. I very much remember the ‘Big Match’ on ABC (just forgot the name of the show!!), and anyone who was into ‘Commando’ war comics saw many an EPL player featured and the ‘War/Battle’ comics always featured subscription options for ‘Shoot’……ah, the memories all came flooding back!!!!
People again will probably be surprised how many AFL/NRL guys are huge EPL fans.
And I know MV Dave, that folk like yourself, Middie and AndyRoo have come around in part to the line of thinking that Demetriou hasn’t been nearly as unreasonable (re Docklands vs Swan St stadium, host city exclusions etc) as the pro-scandal media and anti-AFL elements have tried to suggest. One would hope that some others would take seriously Neil Cordy’s assertions above re the last question.
btw – Good one Con.

Which AFL/NRL players are EPL fans? The only one I can think of is Cameron Mooney from Geleong.

Jarrod Hayne, Jason Ryles, Karmichael Hunt, Wycliffe Palu

I have never bothered clocking the names but plenty of NRL players say they follow the EPL. A few have appeared on match day Saturday too.
nice interview from Cordy, he sounded quite genuine as opposed too the normal responce of “I support Liverpool and think Gerrard is great” but then not really offering much else.

Warren Tredrea is a massive Arsenal fan – just another reason to hate him.
But I’m sure there’s hundreds more. Why would we know if they are or not??
Australian Football said | January 22nd 2010 @ 11:20am | Report comment
Matty Johns when on the Sunday footy show always made repeated references to the EPL and the world game.. Clearly a fan too.
Simmo said | January 22nd 2010 @ 12:22pm | Report comment
Matt Johns is reputedly a Celtic fan. And so is Eddie Maguire.
Peter Sterling became a Liverpool fan during his years playing for Wigan or St Helens.
True Tah said | January 22nd 2010 @ 12:24pm | Report comment
Sterling played for either Hull or Hull-Kingston Rovers
Australian Football said | January 22nd 2010 @ 1:13pm | Report comment
Simmo,
Ha yes Peter Sterling when playing in England picked up some handy ball skills he once mentioned on the Sunday footy show…
I didn’t know Eddie Maguire liked football (round ball)

Tredrea is the one that does the Thierry Henry style telephone celebration is he not?
Lazza said | January 22nd 2010 @ 1:31pm | Report comment
Playing for Port Power is reason enough to hate him. Those of us that follow a variety of sports, no matter which one is your favourite, are true sports fans. Those mono-cultural types that can only follow one and attack or dismiss other sports are not true sports fans in my opinion.

ill take that, im not a sport fan, JUST A FOOTBALL FAN!!!!!! Becoz nothing else compares to the world game

Robbie Farah is a massive Liverpool fan, there was the story at the start of this A-L season of how star-struck he was when he ran into Robbie Fowler in an airport (either Syd or Townsville, can’t remember, not important)
Tah, Sterlo played for Hull, and in that famous Challenge Cup Final against Wigan, who had Brett Kenny. And I’m pretty sure too that Sterlo was a Liverpool fan well before he went to England to play..

MC
l have no problem with AD standing up for the AFL my issue was with the timing and the associated media coverage in Melb. l believe that apart from some disruption to the season the AFL could do very well for itself during a WC through many thousands of people seeing the game for the 1st time. l do hope that the Bubbledome is increased in size to hold WC matches so ES is free for AFL.
TBH Whilst young and single in Traralgon during those 2 years l had better things to do than watch tv
BTW l knew Neil during our Uni years, great bloke and a pretty decent AFL footballer.

agree – small steps in the right direction are a welcome change to the current FTA situation, hopefully 10 will be rewarded with solid viewing figures and are encouraged to increase their stakes in the game.

Con, interesting article and interview with Corby and I will be one who will be tuning into Channel 10’s new football show… Reading the column and interview I was wondering about Lucas Neil life after football—-don’t be surprised if Lucas will anchor the show after his football career in Australia and the UK correspondent will be Harry Kewell… Now that would be something to savour for the Australian Football Fans.

Con,
Good work, how did you manage to get his time for an interview?
Nice heading to your article and I thought I was going to read something meaty about an ex-AFL playing, part-time “Soccer” reporter on TEN.
Nothing really there we didn’t already know and a very diplomatic answer by Shapelle Corby on Demetriou’s behalf.
“AFL clubs will go broke and we will have to cancel the AFL season . . . we want compensation and it will run into the hundreds of millions . . . ”
is not an unreasonable response from Andrew Demetriou?
Con Stamocostas said | January 22nd 2010 @ 4:27pm | Report comment
Thanks Jimbo,
My brother has known Neil for a while and I also met him at the airport when the Socceroos arrived after they qualified for the WC against Qatar. It was when I was on assignment for Goal.com.

I’m not sure if you need an em dash after a coma—concentrate.
Hmm if only Oscar Wilde was alive now we could ask his opinion. He had said once he had spent a day introducing a coma in one of his poems, then spent the next day deciding if he should remove it.. Hmmm, and he did so in the end. Take your time BigAl, we have all night.
