I recently chatted with Neil Cordy, an ex AFL player who currently works for Channel 10. Channel 10’s dedicated sports channel ONE will screen a magazine style football show in February where Neill will contribute some stories.
Neil shared his football experiences; we spoke about the chances of the Socceroos at the World Cup; and also got some information regarding the new football show that has fans of the world game in Australia buzzing.
Half Time Heroes: So I hear you’re a football fan?
Neil Cordy: I’ve been a football fan virtually all my life. Since I was a teenager I started following the English First Division in the 70s. I used to watch Match of the Day on the ABC at 6pm and I subscribed to Shoot magazine. It was great publication. I read it religiously.
West Ham was the team I followed. I used to watch The Big Match also on the ABC, and it was produced by London TV. So we got all the London teams. West Ham was a very attractive team to watch. Trevor Brooking was an outstanding talent. They also had some great characters in the team, like Frank Lampard Senior.
HTH: You witnessed the World Cup in Germany 2006. How do you think the Socceroos will fare at the World Cup in South Africa this year?
NC: I hope we advance to the next stage, but I think it’s going to be a bigger challenge. I think we have a more difficult group this time than the one we had in Germany. The other thing is, our playing group has barely changed from that time. Some of them are a little bit past their prime.
HTH: All football fans are buzzing at the news Channel 10 is going to air a football variety show shown on the dedicated digital free-to-air sports station, One. Can you give us more information?
NC: Sure “World Football News” will be starting on February the 8th. It will have a mixture of international and Australian content, with panelists discussing issues with stories and features. It will be a combination of all those things. We will have an English based reporter who will be catching up with a lot of our guys that are playing overseas.
HTH: As an ex-AFL player, what did you think about the FFA and the AFL arguing in public? And will it affect Australia’s bid for the World Cup?
NC: I’ll say a couple of things about that. I think we are actually going to win the bid. I genuinely believe we will win it for 2022. It just stacks up right. We are the right country at the right time. From Andrew Demetriou’s point of view I haven’t heard him ask any unreasonable questions.
I think it’s not unreasonable to ask for some more detail and I don’t think he is necessarily trying to undermine the bid. But I think it is reasonable to ask what is required, so they can get their games in order.
It’s a big thing that they going to have to work around and be in co-operation with. So he obviously thinks they haven’t been given enough detail from the FFA.

Con
I wrote this a while ago as part of a thread on the future media deals… But in brief … Ch 7 win the ratings but not by a lot… it is believed among a number of media forecasters that if a station got both RL & Football (say 9) they would win the ratings… further that Ch 7 may be in a position to take all the AFL and share with Fox only…
If 10 got some AFL & Football … if 9 got RL & Football …. very interesting times ahead…

I think that is what we are saying Con.. Remember the position statement once used by SBS “The world is truly an amazing place”… It’s not only just for Fox TV but for all.

Exactly Con,
the world game is the world game and no one can claim to own it and have the right to show it.
Every country in the world has football and any country can show football from any other country in the world.

Seems like the Oz 2018-2022 bid is still very strong and currently sits second just behind England’s according to World Football Insider… http://www.worldfootballinsider.com/Story.aspx?id=32968
Only 10 months to go to D Day!
The article confirms what many of us have said here that Australia has a very strong bid, which is well respected by the opposition and Frank Lowy is also well known and respected by his/our rivals. Keep up the good work Aussie bid team

We will not win 2018. Our chance is 2022. Our weakness is that unlike United States we cannot rely on one vote from our own conference.in the first round of voting . The single vote we can rely on is Oceania. Our real strength paradoxically comes from Europe . We rely in the first rounds on Frank’s work with the Europeans the special British vote and the FIFA executive vote
Africa is a complete wildcard . Qatar at least superficially does well here . South Africa does not forget Oceania. Egypt Algeria and Morocco from Africa and some even in Asian conference will not see Qatar humiliated in the first round.
The real power broker in Africa may not even be a bidder yet. China ‘s African largesse has strings attached not only in resources but diplomatic clout . China eyes 2026 Cup and a United states victory would see it lauch a powerful one only Asian bid.
I have read some US football blogs and they make no secret of their lobbying of the europeans . If they split the european vote we are gone. Of all the 2018 bidders only the US stated it understood Sepp’s statement that 2018 should be a European bid only.
The Us is confident that the South American vote will hold in the first rounds. they have six to our one. To many European votes leak away from us we are in trouble. secondly it is imperative we get some of the African vote.
It would seem to me the Asian conference vote will only be solid for the Asian candidate that survives the early rounds . Early on it is I am afraid all over the place.
I am no expert but it is interesting to view the US football bloggers perspective.
In the early vote we will be lucky to get one Asian vote.

Westy an interesting view and well within the realms of possibility (Oz may not make it past the 1st round of voting). No one would seriously consider Oz a chance for 2018. Politics is politics but dont underestimate the power and influence (as mentioned in the linked article) of F Lowy. Will it be enough to garner the sufficient number of votes initially to keep the Oz bid in the mix after the 1st round of voting for 2022? Who knows but l wouldn’t underestimate Lowys influence. No doubt plenty needs to be done between now and December but as it sits at this moment, on the face of it, the Oz bid looks strong.

Westy, the vote will be decided by the 24 members of the FIFA executive committee. Currently this does not include reps from the likes of South Africa, Morrocco or Algeria.
I have heard the theory about China bidding for 2026. There was nothing stopping them bidding for 2018-2022, yet they elected not to do so. If Asia is overlooked for the USA for 2022, there will be a massive political backlash within FIFA. There are 5 bidding nations from Asia, clearly Asia sees 2022 as it’s turn.
I do agree with you that surviving the early rounds is crucial and hope that Europe will throw its votes the way of Australia over the US. Outside of CONCACAF (which has 3 votes) I am not sure that the USA has a lot of friends. They are also yet to announce how they will cater for their own prime time TV markets and the rest of the world.
