In a week where Croatian tennis “supporters” made an embarrassment of themselves and their heritage, it is not all doom and gloom for large group of tennis supporters I discovered when watching the Australian Open.
The fans of Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis must be congratulated for their boisterous yet reverent support of their beloved champ at the Australian Open. While they are loud between points, they respect the tradition and values of tennis.
In my opinion, they have overtaken the Swedes as the most popular group of supporters to grace Melbourne Park.
They have brought much colour and joy to the crowd at a time when large tennis support is scrutinized.
On another matter, lay off Channel Seven’s commentary team!
Apart from Fred Stolle’s absence, the people calling the action are doing a fantastic job, especially Tracey Austin, Jim Courier and Sam Smith, who each bring different opinions on tennis from outside of our comfort zone.

I’d never seen the Australian Open until a couple of days ago, as Wimbledon has always been pretty much the only tennis I’ve ever seen. It strikes me that one of the reasons for Wimbledon’s popularity is the pattern of colours: the green grass, the white of the players’ clothes, the fans’ coloured clothes, and the ( occasional ) sun.
By contrast, the Aussie Open looked very blue. Does absolutely everything have to be blue ? It’s not very easy on the eye. I like Dementieva. I was even disappointed that Henin knocked her out. But the setting looks rather wan and uninspiring.
Can’t they do something to make the whole thing look a bit more…………………..striking ?!?!?!?!?
