NRL will not get eight Independent Commissioners

Make no mistake, there is intense lobbying going on at the moment to fill the eight spots on the proposed Rugby League Independent Commission, as well as a finding a new Chairman.
Executives from News Limited, the NRL and the QRL, who represent the ARL, are busily trying to find the right names who will pass the “Independent” test but still understand what a favour means when they get a phone call.
Anybody that thinks that we will get eight Independent Commissioners and a Chairman who will be 100 percent Independent believes in the tooth fairy.
With the best of intentions, the 16 NRL clubs represented at last Monday’s ‘talkfest’ in Sydney agreed to create, and to support, an Independent Commission for the administration of rugby league in Australia.
Also the Commission is to be truly independent from its inception, and the date for the establishment of the Commission is to be the date of kick-off of the 2010 NRL season if possible – March 12.
Good luck fellas, it wont happen, at least the ‘independent’ bit.
The Commissioners should have been elected last Monday by everyone in the room. Although not perfect, at least we would get the eight most popular names who passed the initial Independent” test.
But finding the right Chairman is another issue altogether.
Was a sweetheart deal done with ARL Chairman Colin Love to stay on as the Commission Chair for twelve months?
The mail is strong that this was the only way that the initiative could get off the ground, but because of backlash, citing that the Chairman MUST be independent, the backroom power brokers are backing off.
Everyone is hoping that Love will put his hand up and walk.
If the ARL becomes a non-entity and loses its Chairman and CEO Geoff Carr, the chances of former Australian coach Ricky Stuart being forgiven and asked back also disappear.
Any suggestions that another “sweetheart” deal was done to appoint Tim Sheens as a short term replacement, while Stuart cools off after he embarrassed the game, will back fire.
Sheens just led Australia to claim the Four Nations Title in the U.K. and may find himself as the main man much longer than what was originally sketched out in the backroom blue print.
There is a plethora of brilliant corporate executives who would fit the bill as the right Chairman of the Independent Commission, but getting 75 percent of the Board to agree will be an achievement, certainly by March 12 this year.
Despite the upfront enthusiasm from the ARL for the Independent Commission, there will be not urgency to stand down.

Midfielder,
I am happy to give you the courtesy of a reply and have no problems if you choose to bag me personally, but can you at least make some sense.
Col the Bear said | January 22nd 2010 @ 9:06am | Report comment
ok I have made it clear who i think should be a starter on the commission
John Quayle =Chair
David Hill =commission member
John Coates= commission member
Alan Border= commission member
Margaret Cunneen QC= commission member( if you don’t know her, you should research, you’ll be impressed)
this is who i came up with so far and with my luck of betting on anything, possibly none of these will have a chance..
ScottWoodward.me said | January 22nd 2010 @ 1:33pm | Report comment
Col
John Quayle is ineligible because he is ex ARL. The QRL would never pass.
Margaret Cuneen is a personal friend and you are correct she is a special lady and certainly would not allow anyone to bully her. Good call.
People like Mike Cleary and Kevin Ryan have the resume’s and would be excellent, but we also have many people in the corporate world you would do a great job.
Somebody like the former BHP boss Ron McNeilly you loves the NRL, would be a fabulous Chairman. http://www.zoominfo.com/Search/PersonDetail.aspx?PersonID=383452.

Ken Cowley is News Limited. They have to at least be seen to be independent.

They are all News Limited directors. Greg is having a lend.

No seriously, if league is trying to rely on tradition and and old system it will fall flat, get in the people who know how to deal with multi million dollar contract and think of league as an investment.

Colin Love has got to go, what has he done for the game?, just a fat cat, enough of playing the game when it suits to keep your post, stand down and pass ot on to someone who’s passionate about the game and bring ideas, energy and passion in this ultra-competitive world. Give us some hope!.
MyGeneration said | January 22nd 2010 @ 2:11pm | Report comment
Agreed. Love is a symbol of the past, should take his place in the dinosaur exhibition at the Australian Museum.

The TV coverage of the World Cup was a disgrace.
The mail is that Love refused to fly on the sponsors (JetStar) plane as they dont have ist class so he went Qantas.
Dogs Of War said | January 22nd 2010 @ 2:21pm | Report comment
I don’t know about that. I loved the bigpond live streaming of all games. Would pay for that if it was offered for NRL matches.
As for the World Matches being on free to air, I don’t really think you could have televised many more and recieved acceptable viewing numbers. Foxtel paid more anyone, and it was about making a profit to ensure the International game had some funds to work with.

80% of people dont have a computer.
Love allowed Channel 9 to stand over the ARL and dictate what was on. It was the World Cup and many key games were not shown live. If 9 didnt want them they should have been on cable or another FTA channel.

80% of people don’t have a computer?

I think 57% of Australians using the Internet probably makes that statement incorrect.

80%? This statistic is clearly invented.
According to the ABS there were 8.4 million active internet subscribers in Australia in June 2009.

The disgrace was that they only showed one game live. For some reason the Australian games were on Sunday Night, when League is never on, and Nine wouldn’t move 60 minutes for the football. The Opening game didn’t start til about 9.30. The Saturday games were on about 10.
Greg said | January 22nd 2010 @ 4:28pm | Report comment
its hardly important, league is a local centric game loved and watched by local. who really cares if the kangaroo win lose or draw against Samoa. More people care about the Gold Coast against Broncos.
Scott Woodward said | January 22nd 2010 @ 4:07pm | Report comment
Let me put it another way.
80% plus of people either dont have a PC and if they do, they would not know how to down load the bigpond broadcast or it is in the too hard basket.
My point was that Channel 9 had the TV rights and were very selective what we watched. If a good game clashed with a high rating show we missed it. Thats fine but there was no plan B. Channel 9 dictated to the ARL.

“According to the 2008-09 MPHS, 72% of Australian households had home internet access and 78% of households had access to a computer. Between 1998 to 2008-09, household access to the internet at home has more than quadrupled from 16% to 72%, while access to computers has increased from 44% to 78%.”

I would like to nominate myself as an Independant Commissioner, I am a Rabbitoh member, my son plays for Redcliffe, I have no political connections, I hate News LTD for what they did to Souths, my attitude is that if a player wants to earn more money in another code, let them go, if a player brings the game into disrepute, get rid of them, in fact I consider myself perfect for the job.
ScottWoodward.me said | January 23rd 2010 @ 3:41pm | Report comment
Buttery,
You have just made yourself ineligible as you would not get the News vote to get in.
On a fair dinkum note, no one likes their team to go, but strategically, there is a strong argument to say it was the correct decision. You cant grow the pie if the pie is not healthy in the middle.
