Who should play for the Melbourne Rebels?

The cries of the die-hard members of the Victorian Rugby Community were answered late last year. After so long, top flight rugby was coming to Victoria. The Melbourne Rebels were resurrected.
This decision however left many hundreds of fans across Australia, and indeed the rugby world, asking “who will play, run and coach such a team?”
Fast forward. We are now just shy of February in the new year these questions are beginning to be answered.
The franchise has now secured the services of a terrific coaching staff with both experience and a lust to prove themselves.
This isn’t to say anyone in their right mind thinks Rod MacQueen and Damien Hill don’t have a hard road ahead of them. Player recruitment from scratch is never an easy task, yet I have faith these two ‘gentlemen of rugby’ can make the best of this situation.
I am Victorian rugby player and fan. I learnt about the game through the VSRU system, a proud and competitive league which thrillingly produced two Australia Schoolboys this year.
Combine that number with the two produced by the Victorian club ranks and it’s clear Vic Rugby is going places. Now, don’t confuse my passion with arrogance I understand this year was more fruitful that most but I honestly think that this proves Victoria has something to offer the rugby world.
Waffling aside, this article was written for a purpose. To answer the question I have been asking myself again and again, “who will play for Melbourne in their debut year?”
Out of curiosity I made a little list of names. As I thought of more names, I crossed off others and replaced them. Soon, this list had turned into a squad.
Now, there will be limits to the future Melbournian squad. Money, age, nationality, current obligations, etcetera will all play a part. I don’t envy the people with the job of courting the players. Priorities will have to be set; a perfect combination of stars, journeymen and Victorians will be hard to find.
Now, as I said above I wrote myself up a blueprint to a squad just like this. A squad I would love to have represent my state.
Current contract obligations didn’t play a part in my hypothetical squad. Nowadays, players are often granted early contract exemptions when they have good reason, most recently Aaron Mauger.
No team wants to pay a player whose heart isn’t in it. In the following list of names you may notice a few Sydney Uni up-and-comers, Damien Hill was a Sydney Uni coach after all, and a few more Victorians than one would expect. It wouldn’t surprise me if the final squad is similar in this respect.
Take a trip into the world of rugby “what-ifs”. Come next year I could see the Melbourne squad looking something like this:
Props:
Rodney Blake, Matt Dunning, John Uglia (Victorian), Agustín Creevy (Argentinian), Tevita Mailau (AUS eligible).
Hookers:
James Hanson, Ole Avei (Victorian).
Locks:
Hugh McMeniman, Pat O’Connor, Cameron Treloar, Levan Datunashvili (Georgian),
Open-Side Flankers:
Beau Robbinson, Julian Salvi.
Blide-Side Flankers:
Dylan Sigg, Siviteni Mafi.
Number 8s:
Tamati Horua (Victorian), Talelei Gray (Victorian).
Scrum-Halves:
Agustin Figuerola (Argentina), Jeremy Sua, Phil Mack (Canadian).
Fly-Halves:
Brock James (Victorian, kind of), Mike Hercus (American).
Centres:
Lloyd Johansson (Victorian), Rex Tapuai (Victorian), Ben Tapuai (Victorian).
Wings:
Tim Finau (Victorian), William Ryder (Fijian), Peter Betham, Mark Gasnier.
Fullbacks:
Christian Lealiifano (Victorian), Michael Pike (Canadian/AFL).
How great would that be! A few thing influenced the make-up of the hypothetical squad, as they will influence the make-up of Melbourne’s actual squad.
Firstly, you will probably notice the lack of Phil Vickery, Brian O’Driscol or the like. The truth is in 2011 Tier 1 national players will be hunting for a World Cup berth.
As such the players making up the squad are from the smaller nations without professional set-ups. Not only is this practical but the rugby world as a whole would benefit from this.
Secondly, this squad has a huge quantity of Victorians, 10 in fact.
This is a Victorian team and as such should include as many established players from the region as possible. All of these men have experienced high levels of Australian Rugby and deserve their spots. There are no slouches in this squad. This side isn’t just about winning it’s about representing Victoria.
Thirdly, there is only 6 non Australians are in this squad. 10 non-Australians just aren’t necessary for this team.
The Force caused issue by recruiting aggressively from Queensland but this squad’s Australian players come from diverse sources and as such won’t cause a problem for the other teams. International players won’t be that necessary.
Another reason to leave these spots open is because of the fact many of the next bests playing in Victoria Premier Division are non-Australian players. International player spots must be left open so that players can fill in if injury strikes.
My fond hope is that somewhere along the line a Rebels higher up reads this, considers it and laughs about how close it is to the list they’ve drawn up. But really, who knows?
I end this article with a question and some food for thought. The question, “who would play for your ideal Melbourne Rebels in 2011?”.
And the food for thought, picture the Melbourne Rebels rolling out in a year with a 22 looking a little something like this:
1. Matthew Dunning
2. James Hanson
3. Rodney Blake
4. Hugh McMeniman
5. Pat O’Connor
6. Dylan Sigg
7. Beau Robbinson
8. Julian Salvi
9. Agustin Figuerola
10. Brock James
11. Peter Betham
12. Lloyd Johansson
13. Rex Tapuai
14. Mark Gasnier
15. Christian Lealiifano
16. John Uglia
17. Tevita Mailau
18. Levan Datunashvili
19. Tamati Horua
20. Jeremy Sua
21. Ben Tapuai
22. Mike Hercus
Now that would be a 22 we could be proud of.

Go the unicorns.
He is Victorian born. If people call Elsom Victorian (which some are) Brock James is Victorian… for arguements sake.

Hi Nick
Great try to set up a squad (actually very good lateral thinking with few of the names you mentioned). I like the intention of basing the squad on Victorian raised players. BTW good on Xavier College to increase their involvement in the rugby last few years – this year there were four schools really competitive in the VSRU (Melbourne Grammar and Xavier College) unlike previous years where finals between St. Kevin’s College and Scotch College was pretty much a given affair.
As far as team is concerned, I do have few issues. I am afraid that Dunning would not fit the bill in terms of personality, quality and discipline. Unfortunatelly, both Tamati Horua and Talelei Gray (both St. Kevin’s College and both genuinely very nice guys) are rather injury prone – Talelei had few really bad knee injuries in his first year with Brumbies (is there a problem with injury prevention and management in Brumbies). Ideally Leguisamon would be my choice for number 8. Johansson plays in Italy so I have not seen him lately, but he could definitely add value as a center like Nonu or Bastreaud. Brock James and Gasnier would be great choices for flyhalf and center/wing respectively. I believe that Mike PIke is in AFL now playing for Swans since late 2009. Hilgendorf was not bad in Force. I also read that Rebels have shown interest in the Manu Vatuvei, but I am concerned that he is typical league player – good carry, good individual defense, strong and not afraid of contact, but OTOH awful kicker, bad feel for the game flow (94 games for Warriors), not too fast and probably too expensive. I believe that it would be better to invest in few younger players of maybe get some sevens players.
Cheers
KF

Actually, Xavier College has been trying extremely hard to be competitive in Rugby for years now. 2009 was just the first year it actually worked out (though they also did pretty well in 2006). In Vic Rugby sometimes regardless of the set-up you can be missing the cattle in 1 or 2 key positions and it just doesn’t work out. Trinity and Geelong are struggling to jump this hurdle.
Leguisamon would be an awesome man to have but the $$$ would be a serious issue. The man is playing for Paris and they are seriously cashed up. Mike Pike is playing AFL but is getting minimal game-time and is presumably on a year to year contract. His name could easily be replaced with an equally good Canadian fullback in the form of James Pritchard. However, getting an AFL player would get some serious Vic media attention and Pike was a handy union player in his time. Hilgendorf or Daruda are both excellect first and 2nd 5/8 options but lack the superstar value of a Brock James and with Christian written in as a Fullback more 10s aren’t necessary.
Vatuvei just isn’t needed. It isnt that he wouldn’t be a handy player but why not convert a Tapuai brother into a winger and you’d have exactly the same type of player. The moto of the Victorian squad selection should be, if you dont need to select non-Victorians, dont. I except though in most cases they will.

Hi
Actually I just remembered that David Fitter who was a handy tighthead prop, played for Scotch College, Brumbies, Force, London Irish and Wallabies (I believe at least one game) is another Melbourne/Victorian player. He is back in Melbourne and I believe that he still plays for Melbourne Uni. He would be in prime age for a prop, if he wants to get back into the game now that he finished his biomedicine degree.
Cheers

[just joking - you can not really compare them]

Nick, wow, what an effort. mnay new names for me. no problems with that! My reality at this point is that there will be some you vics in the academy and a few in the squad, but the bulk will come from OS and other S14 teams. B james is apparently doing very well. I think it is a truly great opportunity and I would be pointing my sons towards the Rebels while Mcqueen is coaching.

KF – you are right about Fits. Played at a Scotch and Melbourne Rugby Club then came back on some sort of gig at Melbourne Uni Rugby Club while doing his degree.
Not sure he has ever actually pulled on the boots for uni since his return?
Last I saw of him he looked like he had been to a few “$10 pot and parma” nights.
But your point is valid, getting him up to super level again wouldnt be a bad idea.

I’ve seen him play twice for Uni. He isn’t really a that impressive by even Victorian prop standards. Also he isn’t exactly in professional playing condition.
If Rebels are looking for a Victorian prop there would be a couple of guys just as good running around, younger too.
Fitter wouldn’t be that high on the recruitment list I’m sure.

This wasn’t meant to sound as harsh as it did. I just think that a 34 year old Med student isn’t a perfect match for a professional rugby contract.

Why not make a cheeky play for a couple of guys like Billy Slater and Greg Inglis, don’t know what their contract situations are. Not wanting to debate their likely succes in a switch but a couple of marquee players are warranted…they would certainly put plenty of bums on seats they have both achieved all their is in RL.

Nick, could be a few bolters from Vic club land you reckon?
I am trying to recall the blokes that stood out when I was running around Melbs..
There was a Islander kid who played at 12 or 13 for Power House and another who played at 8 for Box Hill that, given the right conditioning could make the grade.
Seemed to a few good young props coming through colts too…. and lets face it, unless you are under your early 20′s they arent going to waste their time with you as it will take 2-3 years just to catch up on pro level conditioning.

Well I only listed two (Rex T and Tim Finau). I listed these two because I noticed them when we played Box Hill and sourced their names by the fact they play Axemen. The Yellow Scarfies rate Rex T very highly and I think he has played some Qld Grade footy.
Their are a heap of good young props about. Two Moorabin U20 state ones come to mind. Also Melbourne have some handy front rowers including a former Scotland U20 hooker.

I think its to do with where the club is. They play out of the F1 pits in Melbourne or at leasts thats where their changing rooms are. Their actual club house is a party venue, very shmick.
They are mostly an expats club.
