Cowboys boss Peter Parr has called on North Queensland fans to climb on board the Willie Mason Express and give the club’s newest signing their total support.
Mason will link with the Cowboys early next week following assurances from Sydney Roosters boss Steve Noyce his release will be dealt with “promptly and professionally”.
The controversial forward will miss the opportunity to explain his provocative “nutbag, redneck Queenslanders” sledge two years ago to Cowboys supporters at a fan day at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Saturday because his release is not yet expedited.
“I understand some of his comments in the past have created headlines, but if everyone in the world walked around without an opinion, it would be a pretty boring place,” said Parr.
“Willie polarises people. There’s no grey area with him, it’s either been passionately for or passionately against.”
Parr said the reason it took longer than people wanted to sign Mason was due to the fact it was important all those involved in him coming to the club gave the move their 100 per cent approval.
“We got that,” he said.
He fended off concerns Mason’s arrival in Townsville came at considerable risk given the 29-year-old’s poor off-field record.
“I’m excited what Willie can do on the football field and what he can do for the club,” said Parr.
“This has been played out by the media for some time now and I’m just looking forward to him getting here, training and getting ready for what we hope is a good season.
“People aren’t privy to all the information. All I can say is all the people associated with this club are really looking forward to him getting here and being part of the club and part of the team.”
Parr said a one year deal was a “one step at a time” strategy.
“Let’s just get him here, get him training, get him playing and see what happens down the track,” he said.
Mason is expected to play at least one pre-season trial before making his debut for his new club against the Brisbane Broncos next month.

He was probably better off going to the Storm or Souths if he was seriously looking at winning a premiership. Unfortunately the Salary Crap reared it’s ugly head and a few dis-gruntled board members believed the media hype. Mason’s only crime was that he had a big mouth to go with his big frame. He didn’t glass anyone, he didn’t take or sell drugs, he didn’t flog his girlfriend in self defense or otherwise, he didn’t sexually molest any teenage girls etc. People need to stop believing the media hype swallowing that crap hook, line and sinker. The Cowboys aren’t going anywhere this year, too many mediocre players relying on Thurston and Bowen to win them games when they should be all chipping in.
