Vics cautious on global Twenty20 plan

Victorian cricket has reacted cautiously to reports it is set to join a new worldwide Twenty20 competition. The concept, announced by Rajasthan Royals captain Shane Warne, would also include English county side Hampshire, South Africa’s Cape Cobras and Trinidad and Tobago.

Warne has also captained Hampshire and Victoria.

Tony Dodemaide, the chief executive of Cricket Victoria, said there were no immediate plans for the Bushrangers – Australia’s Twenty20 champions – to join the alliance.

“We have received a proposal from the Royals representatives and the concept is an interesting one but we’ve made no commitments at all,” Dodemaide said.

“We’ll assess whatever proposal comes before us on its merits and make a decision when we’re ready.”

Dodemaide admitted though that “conceptually” being part of the global competition would bring more awareness of the local brand which in turn could attract commercial benefits.

All of the teams will carry the “Royals” suffix in their domestic Twenty20 competitions and play each other in a series of matches, with the first planned for England in July.

Organisers hope to stage a second ‘Royals Twenty20′ in either Australia or South Africa in December, with a third pencilled in for either Jaipur or the Middle East in early 2011.

It is envisaged players from each member of the ‘Royals family’ could be shared between the teams in an exchange system, which could offer the chance of year-round cricket for those yet to reach full international standard.

There are also proposals for teams from New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to join the Royals Twenty20 once the event is established.

“I’m so excited by this,” Warne said. “It would be nice to be 20 years younger.

“Yet again, the Royals are leading the way,” added Warne who led the franchise co-owned by Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty to victory in the inaugural IPL in 2008.

Talking about kissing the hand that feeds you!!
What a massively bad idea. Why should any non-Indian team become part of an Indian alliance, especially given the arrogance demonstrated by IPL officials? Just who are the Royals anyway that we should all flock to join a global alliance? (rehotorical question).
