Can the All Stars game ever be bigger than Origin?

With the inaugural NRL All Stars set to kick off this weekend, perhaps just one thing is left to be discussed before we focus on the action on the field: can, or will, the concept ever become bigger than Origin?
It might sound crazy at first, but as the weeks have gone by, I’ve become unsure that Origin will always be seen as the number one event in the game.
Now, before anyone gets too heated, let me put out the disclaimer that I’m undecided. But here are some things which have, in my mind, shortened the odds on the All Stars game.
1. Passion.
The passion with which the Indigenous players speak of their pride in the selection is almost of a bygone era. It has a real similarity to the passion with which the Queenslanders first used to talk about the Maroon jersey.
2. Gen Y.
The interactive nature of the All Stars selection is likely to make it a bigger hit with younger generations. The fact that they can have a say in the process is far more important to many young fans than, say, letting a bloke who might have a clue what he is on about picking the team.
3. Big Ticket Event.
This sort of event is massive in the US, who is to say it won’t become as big here. We might bemoan American pop culture invading our shores, but it seems pretty good at winning over the masses. I know people who knew the winner of, or even watched, the Super Bowl who wouldn’t watch another sporting event all year. It becomes the thing to do. I just hope we never get so excited about the ads.
4. Bringing in the Kiwis.
While the game is largely about recognising the Aborginal history within the sport, it also has the attraction of featuring some of the best Kiwi talent. Players who will never play Origin. Imagine NSW with Benji Marshall (Imagine NSW even with a 5/8 who could pass).
5. Finally, its unfair to compare the modern juggernaut of Origin with the All Stars first game. It won’t challenge Origin this year or probably for the next five years. It’s like that shampoo: it won’t happen overnight, but it will happen.
Injuries have been cruel to the inaugural event, but the talent is still there to present a memorable game.
Let’s remember people were unsure about the concept of Origin until Big Artie Beetson nearly took Mick Cronin’s head off in the first game.
We are a bit more sensitive these days, but hopefully Saturday’s game will provide a seminal moment that will secure its place in the game’s calendar.

I don’t think so. From the outside (SA) where we are getting minimal coverage it seems already a lot like the AFL Origin games just before their demise. Players suddenly ‘injured’ and unavailable. I bet if it was an origin or a club game they would be available.

Speaking of ‘minimal coverage’, Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth aren’t getting the game televised by channel 9 at all. Plain ridiculous.

Rob, thats just dissapointing.
Im sure the Thurstons & Lars would be hoping to wear this patch on thier chest for the whole country to see.
Channel Nine, this game isnt about Brisbane and Sydney. This is about our Nation!!!

The sooner rugby league fans realise that channel 9 is holding the game back, the sooner will can move forward. They have had 10 years to grow the game down south, in those 10 years they have done nothing, nada, not a thing to grow the sport.
And make sure a channel seven cameraman is handy.
At this game, everyone should be raising banners with the words, “Channel 9 your a disgrace to rugby league’s future”.

Ch 7 are far worse. Wouldn’t know how to promo and televise a game if their life depended on it.

Well at least they show AFL games into NSW and QLD redb, something that channel 9 will never do for rugby league down south, You have been warned, if 9 gets the AFL rights, bye bye AFL on FTA .

I don’t think it will be as big as origin but it provides some good footy and it should generate some money.

I don’t think so either.
The passion you mention exists but only for 1 team, the All-Stars represent nobody and nobody is going to really care if they win or lose. This doesn’t bode well for a long term event
The point about the Big Ticket Event I get but this spot is already filled with Origin and the final series with internationals already lining up to get a piece of the action. How many Big Ticket Events could we sustain?
While I’m looking forward to this game, I’m resigned to the footy probably not being of a super high standard (first game they’ve played all year). While I’m sure momentum will get this off the ground again next year (especially if the indiginous team wins) I can’t see it being an on-going event.

Steve I’d place the grand final above the Origin. But I agree about the potential of the indigenous game. It has enormous potential to grow and jostle for top billing. Not for a while though.

I dont think you will be able to ask this question until after 2-3 years. I remember wearing the Australian Flag Cape 2 years ago, but you know, its just not as fun anymore.
While the passions are high on one side and the hype on the other, at the end of the day, players play the game to win premierships. Working side by side for 40 weeks each year forming a bond with your new brothers is something that is really special between players.
Origin is a different beast. If not for the great Authur Beetson and the magical Wally Lewis, I think Origin would be buried by now. Origin invigorates that state versus state rivalry.
While I’m not of indigenous heritage, I dont think the indigenous players in RL have this burning desire beat the Convicts. They dont seem to have this ‘us versus them’ attitude. It appears this is about personal heritage and the ability to speak out loud that they are proud to be of indigenous heritage. After playing in one, I’m pretty sure most indigenous players will be very proud that they had the chance to play in this game.

What i think it truely is , not only to celebrate our Aboriginal heritage of the game, but also the game itself. Yes it can become a major event, its the opening of the league season, a chance for those lucky few where the game is held, to celebrate the start of the season. It could and should become a huge event, all players are represented.
And all teams represented.
It also has potentail to be played in the biggest stadiums around Australia, and also NZ. Great concept,.

I would rather watch an international any time over SOO.
And I’d rather an Indigenous all stars game between the Aboriginals and Maoris so it would have complete passion from both sides.

Steve, if it’s still being played as a lead-in game in five years time, then no, it won’t top Origin, of the Grand Final as others have suggested.
If however, this game in 5 yrs time is being played the weekend after the GF (think NFL Pro-bowl), or in July, well yeah, it could one day top Origin….
Peter T said | February 12th 2010 @ 12:21pm | Report comment
Maybe it can be played same week as SOO only the teams are chosen from those not picked for Origin. Just a thought

If it was the Maori 13 vs the Aboriginal side, then you would see some real passion. Nothing like 2 Indigenous sides playing for pride and supremacy. This game has already turned into a dissapointment with Inglis, Hodges, Dane Laurie now PJ Marsh, Gareth Ellis and Billie Slater pulling out. Plus the injurys to Dave Taylor and Mattie Bowen didn’t help. They are Dropping like flies.
