Spinner Steve Smith has earned a call-up to Australia’s squad for Friday’s final one-day international against the West Indies at the MCG.

With the series already wrapped up, selectors have opted to rest Mike Hussey and Nathan Hauritz ahead of the upcoming tour of New Zealand.

Wicketkeeper Brad Haddin also returns to the squad at the expense of Tim Paine.

“With the series won, the National Selection Panel has decided to give Mike Hussey and Nathan Hauritz the final match of series off in order to prepare for the upcoming tour of New Zealand,” said chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch.

“Both Mike and Nathan have been significant contributors to the success of the team this summer and managing their workloads now will ensure they are well-prepared for what lies ahead.

“It’s been an exciting season already for Steven Smith and he thoroughly deserves this opportunity in Australia’s one-day international squad.”

Rookie NSW legspinner Smith’s call-up comes after he made a promising Twenty20 debut against Pakistan recently.
