Previewing the Brisbane Broncos in 2010 NRL

The Bronco have three massive losses and their forwards lack punch without big Taylor, but Anderson gives them some authority. Lockyer and Wallace are a must to play every game. Not sure why they think Tim Smith is their answer.
The Broncos were last years worst defensive team averaging 42.5 missed tackles per game. The coach will be lucky to survive unless they come out of the blocks running.
Likely Team:
1. Justin Hodges/ Josh Hoffman Denan Kemp
2. Antonio Winterstein/ Denan Kemp
3. Josh Hoffman/ Ben Te’o
4. Izrael Folau/ Justin Hodges
5. Jharal Yow Yeh/ Dale Copley
6. Darren Lockyer*/ Tim Smith
7. Peter Wallace*/Tim Smith
8. Nick Kenny
9. Andrew McCullough
10. Scott Anderson
11. Sam Thaiday
12. Alex Glenn
13. Corey Parker
14. Ashton Sims
15. Lagi Setu
16. Josh McGuire
17. Guy Williams
* Denotes critical to team structure
Coach: Ivan Henjak RATING: 4/10
To win premiership: Will feel the loss of Hunt big time as he was the talker and instrumental in so many of their moves leading the NRL in try assists in 2009 with 22 from 22 games. Hodges has similar class and moving to fullback (when fit) will allow Folau to play his rightful position at right centre. They look a couple of years away, but still very dangerous.
To make top 8: Will depend on how they come through the SOO series. Border line at this stage but Hodges early injury is a major setback.
To win wooden spoon: They are a chance if something happens to Lockyer.
2009 after 26 rounds: 6th
2010 rating: =9th
Ins: Denan Kemp (Warriors), Tim Smith (Wigan UK), Scott Anderson (Storm), Matt Gillett (Northern Pride QLD Cup), Matt Britt (Raiders NYC), Andrew Clayton (Roosters NYC), Tim Natusch (Newcastle Knights), Rohan Ahern (Sydney Roosters)
Outs: David Taylor (Rabbitohs), Karmichael Hunt (AFL), Tonie Carroll (retirement), Joel Clinton (Released to UK), Aaron Gorrell (Queanbeyan Kangaroos), Tom Hewitt (Released), Aaron Sweeney (Penrith Panthers), Isaak Ah Mau (Nth Qld Cowboys), Will Tupou (Nth Qld Cowboys)

Some harsh truths to follow:
I may be alone here, but I don’t think Wallace is the attacking spark that the Broncs might need, and Smith could be that fellow.
Yes, losing Hunt will hurt them, but if they get a fullback that can tackle, it might change the 42.5 missed tackles a game. One on one, he was the worst defender at the back. Yes he put hits on in the line, good for him, but if someone made a break, it was shut the gate. He was embarrassingly bad, one on one, for a fullback.
Locky is also bad in defence too, unfortunately. I seem to remember he was a lot better at tackling when he actually played fullback. Perhaps my memory is playing tricks.
The Bronco’s forward pack is looking pretty ordinary these days isn’t it? Not too many super rep players that they used to have.
Sims turns up sometimes, but more often than not he is over enthusiastic, and is worth a few penalties every game.
McCullogh looks OK, but for the life of me, I can’t see why they didn’t play PJ Marsh at all last year. PJ Marsh hits well above his weight, and is good around the rucks. If I want to be harsh, McCullogh is hardly Mr Personality. In fact, he is almost a carbon copy of Cameron Smith.
Corey Parker has never really inspired any emotion within me, one way or another.
Josh McGuire seems like a solid footballer, but again, uninspiring.
Their forwards also let in some of the easiest, soft tries I have seen last year. It was just poor defense, and smacked of lazy players just standing around.
I can’t imagine the day when the Broncs pick up the wooden spoon. Could happen though. Probably not this year.

Hoy,
Some relative points.
Hodges will not be any better in defence that Hunt IMO, he is very easy to wrong foot and doesnt read the game as well as what Hunt did. In the meantime they have a problem until he gets back fit.
Tim Smith is not a starting ist grader for mine.
They have a tough draw early and I expect them in the bottom 8 after Round 13.

Its not a very hard draw for Brisbane up early. You would expect them to win the first 3 games since they have already beaten the Cowboys. The Broncs always have a good start to the year, and then a bit of a slip middle of the year. Since they have a tough draw in rounds 9 – 15, I guess they will probably lose those games anyway if they play well. So in good form, and playing easy teams early and late in the season, I reckon we’ll scrape a top 8 finish.

Good preview Scott, make sure you hyperlink all the past previews into the current ones for people who miss them.
Two comments, one the Broncos scramble defence must be fair if they are missing that many first up tackles. Two, their roster looks to be going backwards (what a great move signing Clinton and releasing Petero) so in some ways it is unfair to compare Henjak to Bennett given the quality of the cattle (no that you have, just making the observation.)

Steve,
Thanx for your positive comments.
Firstly I have published a free eBook with all the teams but the entire eBook is too long to paste here so i thought if i just listed a new club each day it would create a lot of interest, especially as many fans do not know the new players or where the coach intends to play 1 – 13.
Sadly I have been advised that it does not meet your guidelines so unless that changes we will start and finish with Brisbane.
OK, so on Brisbane and their coach. This is why I dont rate Henjak.
* my internal moles dont rate him
* He paid over 400k for Folau and played him for half the season on the right wing.
* He then switched him to left centre (his preferred position is right centre)
* he refused to use the experience of PJ Marsh
* He refused to play Dave taylor for most of the season and then lost him to Souths
* consistently had poor shape and had the worst defence in the NRL.
* Crucified Lockyer in one game playing him at 7 when team had injuries.
* Seems to think Tim Smith will solve his problems.

I have faith in my Broncos to make the finals. But I do admit they need a lot of luck. My best idea is Josh Hoffman or Corey (something) at fullback, or Hodges when fit. BTW where did our money go to pay for star players, Lockyer took a pay cut with his contract, and we lost Hunt, Clinton and Taylor. This is ridiculous. But Folau should be in the centres (right) Hodges FB, and Yow Yeh may be left centre, especially since he put on some more muscle. But I do agree with most of your article.

Corey
I have no faith in your coach so i would not be surprised what he does but Josh Hoffman should be fullback until Hodgo comes back, he can then play centre.

Scott, he got us into the finals as a 1st year coach, what more could we ask for, i am starting to get warm and fuzzy about the Broncos now, only because people seem to like writing them off.
Henjak might not be a super coach, but beleive me, he learnt more in one season than most coaches learn in a life time.
He will do, all i am looking for is top 8 finish, anything above is a bonus these days. Could be worse, be a sharkie or Warrior supporter.
