Australian opener David Warner was officially warned by umpire Rod Tucker for swapping his batting stance before the ball had been bowled during his blistering Twenty20 knock at the SCG on Tuesday night.
The left-hander took guard as a right-hander during the sixth over in an attempt to use his skills to disrupt spin bowler Narsingh Deonarine in the home side’s lopsided win.
Warner was pulled up for the radical move during his knock of 67 from 29 balls.
Australian captain Michael Clarke said the officials had said it was a time issue if a batsman changed his stance the opposite way before the ball had been delivered.
“The switch hit is fine,” Clarke said.
“The conversation I had with the umpires after the game is was if Davey turns around and stands right handed you have to give the opposition time to adjust their field.
“Their concern is time, how many times is he going to turn around and they are going to adjust the field.
“I think the switch hit is probably better for David then turning around batting right-handed.”
The switch hit is when a batsmen changes his stance around once the ball is in flight, England’s Kevin Pietersen being a master of the art.
Clarke said it was matter of working out a way of best utilising Warner’s skills.
“He has the talent to be able to bat with both hands. It was the first time we have really tried it,” he said.
“We knew he was going to do it and I am happy we have found out that rule now.”

How can they select Shaun Marsh to open our one day innings when Warner is doing this so regularly? Watching Marsh is almost painful. Imagine this one-day team. And how good a fielder is he – and Smith?
So the team would shape something like this…
Warner
Watson
Ponting
Clarke begrudgingly
White
MHussey
Haddin
Johnson
Hauritz/Smith
Harris
Bollinger

Agree with your team – but cant agree with your reluctance to have Clarke in the team – to me he has proven to be our most controlled batsman in the middle order – can hold the innings together. Lacks a bit in the T20 with the bat – but more than makes up for it with his captaincy. Has surprised me with his aggressiveness and after having my doubts I cant wait until he takes over the test team.

What has Smith actually done as yet for Australia, besides from fielding?

He’s bowled pretty well – esp in T20s. I don’t know if he’s even had a bat yet.
Smart thinking though – promote a hugely exciting prospect at the age of 20, and if he isnt man of the match in his first 3 games, dump him.

FOS – Smith has the same bowling numbers as Warne when he first started. However he is a much better bat and fielder. Certainly Smith is worth a substantial investment. As I have said in a previous thread – there is something different about good leggies, they somehow seem to improve when bowling against the better batsmen

lemo – I was among the most vocal in criticising the dicision to put Clarke in as captain of the T20 team, but he’s done better than I thought. I still don’t think he should be there though.
I think he’s had a tendency to bat a bit selfishly at times and lose the flow of the innings. It’s all well and good to work the singles in the middle overs but you need boundaries too, or else you just get 280 every time and never challenge 320. And how often does he hit it straight to the close fielder at extra cover?
Ferguson is coming back which will only make us stronger. It’s a pretty decent team really. Tim Paine reserve keeper, Hopes reserve all rounder. I’d have Nannes as reserve quick, but there are Bracken, Sids, Hilfy etc.
