Pim Verbeek’s future as Socceroos coach will be resolved next month, well before Australia’s World Cup campaign kicks off in South Africa in June.
The Dutchman’s current contract expires after the World Cup, but he will decide whether he will continue on past that point after Australia’s Asian Cup qualifier against Indonesia on March 3.
After meeting with fellow World Cup coaches in Sun City, South Africa on Tuesday, Verbeek told The Associated Press: “If I’m not going to stay it has nothing to do with Australia, it is to do with only myself.”
Football Federation Australia media adviser Rod Allen said Verbeek had the full support of the FFA, but that the coach’s focus at the moment is on the Socceroos’ South African mission.
“Pim Verbeek is contracted up until after the FIFA World Cup in South Africa,” Allen told AAP.
“Currently Pim is trying to qualify the Socceroos for the 2011 Asian Cup.
“After that match against Indonesia on March 3 in Brisbane, the full focus will be on preparing the squad for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
“Pim Verbeek has the full support of FFA. Any decision on Pim’s future will be decided at the appropriate time.”

pends on whether he can get a dutch club to coach i suspect. hopefully FFA have an idea who they might want to replace him. whether the decision shld be Pims and not the FFA’s is another issue. As much as i respect the results he ground out to get us to the WC, itm ight be time for a fresh change at the top. players willl be past their use by date, or close to it. time for transition at the roos.
whoever takes over might have less to work with…player wise – so hopefully they have a solid international pedigree.

It’d be good if he could take the team to the Asian Cup, but as thats in january he might be forced to take a six month holiday before the start of the European club season after that.
So he’d probably prefer to leave after the WC.

A certain Guus Hiddink is jobless after the World Cup, but I doubt we could afford him. Verbeek is actually somewhere around the 7th highest paid coach at the World Cup; more highly paid than Dunga and Maradona (although this value is not adjusted using the cost of living in each country). The FFA obviously can’t offer Hiddink as much as a big European club, but will probably offer more than most national teams.

i thought guus was tied upto the Turkish team, and in any event as he has “been here and done that” – i cannot see him returning.
will certainly be intriguing to see who we do end up with. i liked troussier post Guus and the Advokaat shambles.
will the FFA stay dutch (who is there left who isnt tied to a club) or be open to any and all credentialled managers in their price range and who wld be interested in looking after the roos (because am not sure every world class coach wld up sticks and come here).

Yeah I thought Trousier was a better candidate. However, I think he wanted to be coach and technical director like he was in Japan (he wanted to oversee all the youth teams). Considering the great job he did, I would have probably gone with him. However, we had Rob Baan as TD at the time and the FFA was Dutch crazy so Pim got the job. I think we’ll end up with a Dutchmen who has Eredivisie experience. Hopefully it’ll be someone who’s more attacking than Pim.

It’s all good stuff … having a way forward is a good position to be in.
