Rebels should be looking to Argentina

I read with dismay a press report in which it was asserted that the Melbourne Rebel’s talent scouts where not considering Argetenian players because all the good ones were already in Europe.
Santiago Fernandez – not to be confused with the Mexico City FC striker – has played for the Pumas, and played well, and still hasn’t moved to Europe. He’s probably still under 25.
And he does more than kick.
Can someone please get hold of his CV and put it in front of Rod McQueen and John Connolly? He could be the next Hugo Porta, but half as good would do. They need to move fast or he is going to the RSA.
They could do worse than give him a shot.

Sluggy
I agree with your sentiment, club rugby in Buenos Aires would probably be amongst the most competitive amateur comp in the world and would be great to see how the likes of San Isidro would go against Sydney Uni.
Maybe the language barrier would work against them though.

Tah,
The language doesn’t seem to inhibit the very many Argentinians playing professionally in Europe.
The thing about Fernandez is he has nine games for the Pumas under his belt and he actually runs it instead of kicking the leather off it.

It’s really not that hard to learn a new language if you have an incentive. And professional sportsmen wanting to play and earn a living abroad certainly have an incentive.
